Emily Roach was recently shortlisted for a Penguin Random House Design Award for producing a book cover for Bill Bryson’s bestseller, ‘A Short History of Nearly Everything’. 📚 • Well done Emily! 🙌 • Here @ejr.draws the @uswillustration student, speaks about what it was like being shortlisted, and her work on the cover👇 • “Getting shortlisted for the award was a huge surprise. I never expected to be chosen, but Im incredibly grateful. To be recognised by such a famous publishing house as Penguin is a massive honour so, to find out Im the only person from Wales shortlisted makes it even more special! • The scope of the book largely inspired the design of the cover. It covers so many topics from the beginning of the known universe to the present day. So, I began to consider how I might represent this in one image. I broke down the themes of the book and thought of it as a sort of guide to understanding our place in the universe, filled with knowledge waiting to be unpacked. With that thought in mind, I decided to represent that information as a plastic model kit, waiting to be assembled and understood. • The thing I enjoyed most about creating the cover was the freedom I had to think conceptually. Designing a book cover is a process that relies on divergent thinking, and I enjoyed letting my creativity run wild with this brief.” • #illustration #bookcover #uswfamily - @uswcreative on Instagram
