6 lawyers before me tried to get St Lunatics / Nelly a record deal but nobody paid attention. Mase’s former manager brought them to me and the songs on the demo were beyond catchy and caught my ear. Unfortunately, major label execs didn’t think real urban music could ever come from St Louis. I had to shop it to a “rock” A&R as a crossover act with pop hits. I even introduced them to ‘*NSYNC because Justin loved hip hop and I thought Nelly would be a great opener for their stadium tour. The lesson that still drives my deal shopping choices today - forget genres and race and trends and “hot” cities. Just focus on star talent with great songs. Nelly is no different than Khalid. Music biz people still think he’s an R&B artist and can’t seem to understand that those arenas are primarily full of multi-racial teenage and college aged girls who don’t listen to R&B. Boxes and assumptions have no place in the creative marketplace. Kids will find and support great artists, etc. Stop stereotyping and focus on what’s right in front of you.
