What’s the difference between “alignment” and “continuity” in yoga practice? 🤔 All too often, “alignment” can imply that there is one way to arrange one’s body in a pose, and that it is universal. “Continuity,” on the other hand, suggests a more internal experience. ✨ Continuity refers to a state of harmonious agreement throughout the moveable parts of the body. In other words, when we focus on continuity, we tune into the relationships between bones at each joint, between the inner movement intentions (the breath) and the outer manifestation of an asana, and between the internal and external structures of our bodies. ⚖️ Even if you don’t regularly use yoga props—blocks, straps, blankets, etc.—use them when you practice for continuity. They are invaluable tools for helping you achieve structural integrity in your poses. ✅ Mindfulness of the disposition of your brain can help you determine if your pose is in harmony with itself. Does your brain feel tight, hard, strained or contracted? If so, relax your brain if possible, then look around the body and note where else you might be straining. 🧠 All these cues are subtle. They require that we look more deeply than we may be used to. An overstretched or impinged joint will speak right up—its feedback is right on the surface. Reciting alignment rules in our heads as we practice squelches deeper exploration. Looking deeper is the essence of yoga practice. TIPS ON SURVIVING SOCIAL MEDIA What I’ve learnt these past (almost) 4 years. •Set boundaries.We dont have the capacity to process the amount of information thrown our way and THATS’S OKAY.We are allowed to say no,we dont have to respond right away,we are more than an engagement rate or a platform. •Edit and clean.The unfollow button is your bestie.It helps filter whats let into our lives and that in turn affects our mental health.Remember,an algorithm decides what you see and makes sure you see A LOT of it - its clever but cant ever replace the 6th sense weve been blessed with. •Value your time.I get lost in scrolling and love gaining inspiration from the many mamas I adore but the real world is beautiful and misses you!So set that timer and take regular social media breaks as well. •Comparison is senseless.There’s a lot of ways to play the social media game.I get many emails and DMs daily,asking me to join engagement pods,pay for exposure and take part in other ways to grow my following.Ive been told to better curate my feed and sometimes I too wish I traveled more or lived in a better styled home but then I remember,Im only seeing scattered squares of someones life.Its not enough to make up the entire picture.We are all magnificent in our own unique way!Never lose sight of that. •Respect that this space may mean different things to different people.Some may post recipes,others may be advocating for a better future or documenting the season of life they’re living.We get to decide what we want to share and how much we want to share.Never feel pressured into posting about anything.Making your profile public doesnt automatically mean your entire life needs to be public too. •Lastly,always act with empathy even when something doesnt make sense,rather ask questions first.We are far too quick to anger and judge.Call-out culture is the norm but what if we chose to understand one another a little better rather than simply wanting to change each other? That relaxed #labourday look. Who am I kidding, this is most days, taking my kiddo to a nearby jungle gym, that’s #momlife for ya. Speaking of which, I don’t really do photoshoots anymore, it’s more like asking hubby to snap 5 or less photos before Lucas starts to get bored watching nearby. As you can see, this wall was drab and grey, so I decided to take a stab at making it match the stripes on my shirt (which is under $12 in the STRUCKBLOG Shop, big and oversized with an added knot I tied at the bottom) and voila! I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to edit this on my phone, so I used the desktop version of Photoshop and the colour replacement tool (thanks YouTube for teaching me how 😆). I can’t believe we are finishing Week #4 of the Suit Up Challenge...it seems like September just started! These challenges go quicker every month. As this was my third challenge, I wanted to focus more on my nutrition. I’ve been tracking what I eat every day on the Cronometer app since the beginning of the challenge and recognize I have some work to do to balance out the proteins, carbs, and fat that I’m eating. However, I’m still so happy with the results I keep seeing from these challenges, and it’s great to get the support from the other challengers. @donsaladino and @mel.ic.ious have started an amazing community and program, and it gets better every month!! Just some of the things I’ve learned... #1 Listen to your body! If you’re tired, rest and recover so you can charge the next day. #2 Food (especially carbs) is not the enemy! Your body needs this fuel to keep your energy up and metabolism burning. #3 Water, water, water...but not too much water! I’ve been following the 50% of body weight in ounces rule, and it’s been working. #4 Pushing yourself is much easier when your teammates have your back! You guys really are the best...I feel like I can totally be my crazy, energetic self and love the support we all have for each other! What type of pose comes to mind when we say “a meditative posture”? Chances are in your mind your envisioning a lotus pose or a sukhasana (easy pose) or any other cross legged position. . “Your goal is not to battle with the mind, but to witness the mind.” — Swami Muktananda . The thing is, in order to witness the mind, you can adopt any position that is active enough to keep you awake without strain, and relaxed enough so that you can maintain it for a certain period of time without getting tired. You can sit crossed legged, kneel, sit on a chair, or you can even lay on your back (but if you’re laying there’s a risk that you might fall asleep, so I wouldn’t recommend this option unless you’re already quite familiar with your meditation practice 🤣) . Sometimes, we become so fixated on the actual physical act of sitting to meditate, that we easily fall onto the Rajasic side of our nature: we get obsessive about how it’s gotta happen, and chase the ever so elusive meditative state — becoming frustrated every time we don’t achieve it, and inviting more frustration. And then we may fall onto the other side: “this is not working, so what’s the point?” — we then let Tamas, inertia and darkness take over. . But what if we were to sit without expectations, just to watch the thoughts, just to feel the breath — just to be. And what if we could approach every moment of our day with that mindset? . Dont let them tame you. That quotes always felt very poignant to me because it gets at a part of myself Ive worked very hard to reclaim. As a young kid, I was talkative and energetic and fascinated by everything. I was just as comfortable telling adults all about my opinions as chatting to my peers. As I got older, I learned that my confidence made other people uncomfortable and gradually turned inward, getting more and more anxious about speaking up. Through my adolescence and young adulthood, Ive consciously worked at shaking off those expectations and learning to release that all of that innate creative energy. To me, that letting go is wildness and its led to decisions like starting college at 12 years old, moving to New York on my own at 19 and letting go of my career expectations to focus on activist work. From midnight tonight, Regional Victoria will move to step three of its coronavirus reopening and hospitality and holidaying is back on the ‘allowed’ list [hallelujah]! For small business owners such as Kirsten from @mingling_waters_nowa_nowa this means that her cafe and caravan park can reopen. She is allowed to have 10 people indoors (floor space permitting, one person per four square metres) with tables spaced and no more than 20 inside the premise. Kirsten has been dusting off her outdoor tables and as of tomorrow, is permitted to have up to 50 (space permitting, tables 1.5m apart). An establishment that can cater for all the above with the appropriate gathering and density limits can have 70 patrons at a time. A two hour limit exists for those sitting down for table service and businesses must have a COVID safe plan. It’s certainly hard to get your head around how to do all this stuff, but everyone is getting on with it. Regional businesses are feeling good that they are finally allowed to reopen, but the policing of the rules will take lots of work. It’s definitely NOT business as usual, so let’s all try and help out by complying to the rules and be considerate. This morning I shared with my sister that I hadn’t been taking great care of myself lately, so she encouraged me to delve into my closet and get dressed to help my mental health. I at first created a look full of grays and blacks, and then I decided to pull a 180 and go for my power color: red. That simple act gave me a better foot forward for my day ahead. 5 years ago I walked away from a safe and secure career I had built for almost 20-years. I didn’t have a clue as to what I was doing. All I knew was that I was in full blown identity crisis mode and I started on a path of re-writing my story. One that had social media as the platform and face of everything I was working my ass off for behind the scenes. A few things I was told by “experts” along the way: 👉🏻 only local brands will want to work with you, you aren’t “big enough” 👉🏻 you need at least 10k followers before anyone will partner with you 👉🏻 the more followers = the more money brands will pay you . This is what I know to be true: 👉🏻 I was the face of a National brand’s Holiday Campaign less than 2 years after getting started 👉🏻 One of the biggest contracts I signed came when I had 2.5k followers on IG with a National broadcasting company. 👉🏻 13k followers translated into the most financially successful day I have ever had in my life (cushy career included) when I launched my first online course with ZERO paid advertising (moral of the story here? More engaged followers means you earn your own damn money without relying on someone else to pay you 😉). . Everything you need to move forward and take action on is already inside you. You don’t need expert opinions or the advice of what others people did. You just need to follow your gut, let your intuition lead the way and take action on every opportunity that presents itself on the path to figuring this whole life thing out. . Be you, do you. Carve your own damn path and start stepping into your life without letting limiting beliefs (or “expert” opinions) keep you smaller than what you are capable of becoming 💕 . ✨ Let’s talk about the clitoris – the most magical of our body parts.✨ The clitoris is a wonderful part of our anatomy, devoted to sexual pleasure! It is an erectile organ and has the same embryonic origin as the penis. The two organs are thus very similar in shape and function. They both fill up with blood upon sexual arousal and become erect – so yes indeed, if you have a clitoris, you can have erections too! The clitoris consists of a glans, a body, two pillars (or crura) and bulbs. Only the glans (and sometimes part of the body) are external, the rest of the organ is buried under the vulva and sits around the urethra and the vagina. The glans varies greatly in size, from barely visible to up to several centimetres long; it isn’t always visible, sometimes only showing itself during arousal (when getting erect). The clitoral hood is a fold of skin that covers (or ‘hugs’) the clitoral glans and external part of the clitoral body. It varies in size from person to person; it can be small or large, and it protects the shaft and (sometimes) the sensitive clitoral glans from chafing and dryness. The glans and the external part of the clitoral body are usually covered by the clitoral hood. Two vestibular bulbs are connected to the clitoral body and are located underneath the crura. These bulbs surround the vaginal canal and are made of spongy erectile tissue (they increase substantially in volume upon arousal). The clitoris contains many sensory nerve endings, especially at the surface of the glans and in the body. Some of the nerve endings are like those found in other areas of the body (which detect pressure, vibration, temperature and pain) but some are found only in the clitoris and are specific to sexual arousal.
