- Grief
I love focusing on what I can do instead of what I am not going to do anymore, as the lovely suggestions posted on. The question I, therefore, ask myself if I come to yell at my children is: what do I want more of? Yelling foster distance, and I know I want the opposite. When you yell and find yourself in a habit-turnaround process, it is foreseeable that you will default to the old and well-known path at times. ‘Ouch, I reacted by yelling at my son instead of counting to 10.’ Don’t worry! I fall back on old paths all the time. Still, I continue to work on treading new paths and focusing on strengthening the things that I want more of. Especially when I acknowledge that my old habits hurt myself, my children, those I love, or in some way, make life more painful to me. Guilt and shame don’t do you any good, and they certainly don’t help you to continue your significant attempt to walk new pathways. The art of self-compassion means redirecting yourself to more appropriate paths. Then moving on, the best you can, knowing that no changes happen overnight. It requires persistence and a lot of effort. If you want to be better at channeling harmful or pointless habits into something more productive, then just continue with new-pathway-steps. I finally feel like I’m healing and it feels so good. I feel like I can move on and be happy, I can go out with friends and have a good day without being insecure and angry at myself. I wish I tried to heal myself a little earlier but maybe that’s why it feels so good to feel whole, because I’ve hurt myself for years on end and wouldn’t give myself a break. I want to thank all my friends for helping me and making me feel good and worthy until I believed it and I love you all so much and you guys really saved my life. I really thought I’d be dead a long time ago and some days make me realize how much I love my people and how my life has so drastically changed because of just a few influencers. I never wanted to die but I hated myself so much and just everything about what I did was so awful and horrible and I thought I’d help everyone around me if I just left. And I know this is just a good moment, but I’ve slowly been happier and feeling more stable and that’s such a powerful feeling. This account has immensely helped too. And for anyone who doesn’t know, this is a fake name for privacy reasons and being able to just be someone else and express how I feel is so incredible and has helped so much. Can we gather around like Elephants? One month ago, a kind-hearted, gentle soul died a week short of his 6th birthday. Weston was enjoying an outdoor summer camp when he was suddenly struck by a falling tree that nobody saw coming. Weston was growing into a person who was socially and environmentally aware- he was encouraged to love and accept people for who they were, no matter their race or sexual orientation, he wasn’t afraid to paint his fingernails pink, or wear t-shirts reminding us to “be kind”, he would do anything to make his baby sister happy. He liked baseball with his dad and riding his bike with friends. Like his mom, he had a curious mind who found beauty and joy in everything around him, apparent in his twinkly blue eyes and the thumbs up sign he gave in all his photos. His parents believed he would grow up to change the world. I feel that everyone who knew him felt that way too. His family is a part of our Grow Midwifery and Refinery House families. His parents are personal friends of mine and are very near and dear to my entire Lindstrom family. As his mom and dad are two of the most gracious, giving and humble people I know who give way more then they receive, I’m sharing this go fund me page in hopes we as a community can help them access the resources and time to support their journey walking forward. I heard this quote from an speaker at #CHOP a couple weeks ago and it stuck out to me as one of the most concise and urgent explanations of why white silence is violence. In my conversations with friends/family/members of my communities, a couple frequent remarks are “I can’t support the protests because of the looting” or “Can’t this be done in a more civil way?”. While I did not agree with these comments at this time, it wasn’t until hearing this quote that I realized how dangerous this sort of normalcy-preserving hesitation is. It sneakily threatens to halt the momentum of radical efforts through the guise of “protocol” or “civility”, when our goals require a complete reset of the status quo. Please continue to have conversations with members of your communities who do not share your beliefs. Its Public Lands day, again. Here we are trying (poorly) to wax philosophically. We’ve been thinking a lot lately about what is taking place with public lands, not just in regards to the issues of litter, leaving poop all over and extreme vandalism, but also the attack on them by large corporations and, sadly, our own government. Speaking with a Forest Service ranger a few weeks ago, he made an interesting statement: They arent yours, they are ours. This hit pretty hard and as something profound. They arent mine, they are ours. This statement, We feel, adds to the gravity of the responsibility we all have for their protection and preservation long term. If they are treated well and respected, we all prosper and enjoy them. If they are hurt, we are all collectively hurt. As Edward Abbey once wrote: Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread. A civilization which destroys what little remains of the wild, the spare, the original, is cutting itself off from its origins and betraying the principle of civilization itself.” We like to think positively that there is still more that unites us than divides us, and public lands are a major thing that can unite us. We ask you to stand for something more and use what means you have to educate and participate actively in our public lands preservation. We put together some simple ideas you can easily do. While I’m just taking some time out for me on this sunny Brisbane day I thought I pop in and say hi. How are you all doing? It’s been so wonderful spending time with my family here in Queensland this past week, I’d been missing my kids so much recently these past few months and with the daily grind back at home in Adelaide this trip has been just what I needed. ~ Just seeing them together and surprising my son for his 25th birthday on Monday has brought me so much joy and ease because honestly I felt my heart literally ache with pain not being able to see them. ~ Practicing my yoga poses, meditating to healing music 🧘♂️ and sleeping to Tibetan singing bowl music has definitely helped ease my way through these feelings of grief, anxiety and loss, because that is exactly what I truly was experiencing. I felt my self at times experiencing symptoms of sadness, feeling a sense of loneliness, and with the added pressures I feel sometimes at home always giving myself to others, my mind and body weren’t always in a good place. Enjoying some time out on this holiday, sightseeing and seeing both of my kids has certainly made a difference to the way I feel. ~ Feeling so much more happier within myself, calmer, less anxious more grounded and sleeping better, this trip came at the right time for me, definitely needed it and in a few days I will look forward to returning to my husband with a spring in my step. And you know who is also on his way home too soon, my boy who has just finished with the AFL footy season who I’m sure will keep me on my toes busier than ever cooking and more washing, can’t wait! Since finishing my dissertation, Ive found myself writing creatively again (not that dissertation writing isnt creative 🤷♀️) and wow has it felt amazing. I wanted to figure out how to best share this longer form writing with you all and have started a newsletter of sorts, that Im calling Soft Reflections. I say of sorts because really what it is is a piece of personal writing, which I hope will help my fellow trauma bbs feel seen, and show you that healing is very, very much possible.⠀ ⠀ In Soft Reflections #1: The Broken Light Switch; or, a Lifetime of Disordered Sleep, I reflect on the ebbs and flows of my relationship with sleep, its connections to my nervous system, and learning to care for my flight response.⠀ ⠀ You can sign up to receive 1-2 new pieces of writing per month via my website (see my stories for the swipe up option). See, sometimes people come into our lives and they love us like sunrises — only ever leaving us softer, and kinder to ourselves. But sometimes, sometimes people come into our lives and they love us like hurricanes — making us question if we feel too deeply, if we are simply too much to hold. The hardest lesson you will ever have to learn is that this too is a gift. To have been loved in halves is to have been loved by someone who taught you how to walk away. How to choose yourself for once, how to stand up for your worth. At the end of the day, they may not have loved you, but they did teach you how to survive the wreckage, how to endure the storm, and how to rebuild.
