Need some inspiration to live life to the fullest? Meet my buddy @joelcostellopt ... He found a tumor on his brain & in February 2020 had brain surgery to remove it from a very tricky position. Coming out of surgery he couldnโt see, eat or walk and has been through months of rehab. Throughout the whole process he has remained so upbeat and positive and has been an absolute inspiration to me. Since I was on crutches earlier in the year we promised each other when we were both able to walk again weโd take a stroll... and here we are!!! Today was such a great reminder to enjoy every second of every day, stop sweating the small stuff and not to take things for granted. You never know when life is going to change. 2 september 20 Johnny took this photo of me a few nights ago when we walked down to the beach to watch sunset... I look at it and think how in the hell did we both get so lucky? story time - I met Johnny my first year of school in NC. He had just transferred there, I was a newbie freshman, & weโve been best friends since that first day. I ended up feeling like UMiami would be a better journey for me & transferred as well. Living in India is a daily battle. Sometimes the water supply goes off, sometimes the power breaks down. Sometimes supply chains get thrown off, sometimes the taps begin leaking. Sometimes the internet conks off, sometimes the roof begins to drip. Then thereโs local politics and occasionally the water literally turns murky. I rant from a place of absolute privilege, I know that. I shudder to think how those less privileged than me manage with the excessive rain, heat and cold, and lack of consistent water and electricity. Yet having had the opportunity to live in other developing and developed parts of the world over the past few years, I sorely miss the solid infrastructure and ease of living. But despite the challenges, every morning (when I manage to wake up) and evening, the sky turns red, orange, pink and purple! On hot sultry afternoons, a family of otters come swimming to the water body near us. Butterflies and dragonflies flutter around me in the wilderness. And fireflies glow outside our window at night. I often feel like Iโm living in two parallel worlds simultaneously. One which I largely managed to escape so far, and one which Iโve been chasing all along! For me, home was always where I packed and unpacked my suitcase, it was always that middle ground that I could pop in and out of. Iโve learned in these last few months, that home is something you create. Itโs the people you meet, the paintings you hang on your wall, the meals you make. Itโs a place where life happens a little bit slower, but thatโs okay. Lots of things have been learned over these months, but I know if anything Iโve definitely discovered my home. Iโve been reading Divine Beauty by John ODonohue at a snail pace, today I would like to share something little from this book that makes a big difference to my lockdown life. I found the following book description to be so fitting to the times we live in. I began reading it at the start of the pandemic, and each day the following words echo through the moments Iโve been given. . . Here is how he introduces the book. . . โIn these uncertain times of global conflict and crisis, we are riven with anxiety; our trust in the future has lost its innocence, for we know now that anything can happen from one second to the next. In such an unsheltered world, it may sound naive to suggest that this might be the moment to invoke and awaken beauty, yet this is exactly the claim that this book seeks to explore.โ . . And my favourite piece of advice from John is to always hold something beautiful in the mind, like this lady soaking in the beauty early this morning. Everyone who was out walking on Bandstand took a nice long pause to enjoy some grace from the Universe.
