We have a living, breathing garden at Burnaby Village Museum, inspired by Burnaby’s market gardens by Chinese Canadians. This garden is a space to celebrate that market gardeners have been growing produce in south Burnaby for more than a century. This fertile and productive area is still home to several produce farms, some of which have been farmed by the same Chinese Canadian families for several generations. #MuseumMonday - @burnabyvillage on Instagram

Todays topic at #microfarmandranch is garden secret weapons. I really had to stop and think about this one because I often feel like my gardens grow on love and sheer luck alone. But after going over the 10 years of personal at home vegetable gardening I decided that I do in fact have a few secret garden weapons. 1) Grow flowers in your vegetable garden. The flowers will attract the needed pollinaters resulting in a much better crop yeild. Extra bonus: certain flowers are known to deter pests. #companionplanting 2) mulch, mulch mulch. I use whatever organic matter I can come across. Straw from local farmers, turf grass clippings, and leaf litter from the previous fall. I add a thick layer of this over my entire garden in the spring to keep moisture in and weeds out. Extra bonus: These organic matters break down within a year adding nutrients back into the soil. 3) my final secret weapon is how years ago I organically treated the dreaded potato beatle going from having thousands and them eating entire crops to no longer seeing them in my garden. But I believe that deserves a post on its own because its a long explanation. So stay tuned and let me know if you want to be tagged in that post to not miss it. Im still at war with squash bugs, vine borers and Mexican bean Beatles. Any suggestions on how to win those battles would be so helpful! Im so excited to learn from you and read about your secret garden weapons? Be sure to use #microfarmandranch in your post and tag me and my gals so we can all learn together. ❤️ @elisabethgorham @portervalleyranch @citygirlstartsafarm #thisherehomestead #homesteading #gardentips #gardenhacks #lifeinmygardn - @garden_to_table_zone6 on Instagram
