Wollheim makes the same point as Wittgenstain but in relation to works of art, he states that artists are conditioned by their context- their beliefs, histories, emotional dispositions, physical needs and communities- and the world that they interpret is a world of constant change. What I seek in my work is a crack in the rules made by power. It’s there, a possibility of healing a community through the wounds appear through art? Those visual wounds are important for me to describe, even when knowing that they spill drops of anguish for some observers. History does not belong to us but we belong to it and we can make a change. Käthe Kollwitz was a German artist whose artworks often depict the effects of poverty, hunger and war on the working class. Despite the realism of her early works, her art is now more closely associated with Expressionism. / . For this particular composition, she reveals in a letter that she used herself and her youngest son Peter as models. looking in the mirror for reference. Mina, the daughter of a cellmate, helps Fatema expose the long scar on her left forearm which is a sign of self harm. She doesnt remember what had happened but from what she was told by other incarcerated women, a glass broke in on of the rooms and next thing they know she had picked up a piece, slashing her forearm open. She received 25 stitches. . Fatema was as young as Mina was when she was married off to her cousin, who was addicted to different substances. He used to beat her repeatedly in her head, so frequently that it has left her impaired for life. “I used to eat spoiled food and expose myself to the cold so that I get sick and die. I was hoping death would free me from the miserable life I had. The abuse went on until I couldn’t stand his cruelty anymore, I went crazy and strangled him.” Click the link in our bio for the whole story. . This powerful series by Iranian-Canadian photographer @kianahayeri was originally published in a @nytimes story titled “They Killed Their Husbands. Now In Prison, They Feel Free.” This visual report takes a look at the lives of nearly 20 imprisoned women in Herat, Afghanistan, found guilty of murdering their husbands after years of abuse. In many cases, these women were married as minors. She found that many of these women’s lives were dominated by fear, but years of physical and verbal abuse had transformed that fear into anger. They were so tired of being afraid that their instinct to survive drove them to kill. By the time Kiana met them, imprisoned and facing lengthy sentences, they had become different people entirely. “All these women were full of emotions, resilience, life and most importantly hope,” Kiana said. Still COVID -19 has seen a rise in domestic violence worldwide, “In a place like Afghanistan, a country where most of its population was already suffering from some form of depression, a level of PTSD, or other mental illnesses, the pandemic has only worsened the situation. In questo periodo, essendo costretti a stare rinchiusi in casa, il tempo è troppo ed è inevitabile non pensare, non ricordare. Em meio ao êxtase por parir em casa e quebrar todos os protocolos do sistema, eu jamais imaginara que o mais difícil estava por vir. Por volta das 21h30 já estávamos no outro quarto. Imprinting 💦 Ainda não tinha parido a placenta, eu sentia o cordão pulsando em minhas pernas, nos envolvendo como laço que jamais será desfeito. Te coloquei no peito. Eu achava que sabia! Eu acreditava que só bastava colocar no peito e tudo fluiria. Eu estava muito enganada. Naquele dia começaria a nossa saga que durou EXATOS 54 DIAS. Eu jamais me esquecerei desse número. Foram 54 dias de tortura, de negação, de não me aceitar por não saber amamentar, de dedicação, de muita DOR. Mesmo com o mundo contra, eu jamais te ofereci qualquer outro alimento, filha. Eu não desisti. Eu sabia que ia me superar. Era difícil vê-la chorando e gritar junto quando ela grudava em meu peito! Era um misto de leite, sangue e lágrimas, literalmente. Um mamilo que quase necrosou, uma mente que não estava saudável, uma mãe que só queria ser capaz de nutrir sua cria sem dor. Eu me questionava todos os dias se aquela tortura iria passar. As inúmeras idas à Santa Monica eram em vão. Porque lá eu me sentia segura, eu aprendia. E ao cruzar a porta de vidro eu desaprendia tudo. O que faltava? MENTE SÃ! Foram 54 dias, quase DOIS MESES com o mamilo lacerado, aberto, sangrando, purulento, e no 55° dia, como mágica, nos conectamos. E, mais uma vez, vencemos o sistema. Desde então, apoiamos, incentivamos, lutamos juntos a outras mães que querem amamentar ou que por algum motivo não conseguiram amamentar. Estamos juntas. “Properties of the Hammer”, a self portrait developed in a darkroom by me in 1993. I was 19 years old, and I knew there was something deeply rotten in the area of Texas I grew up in. Insidious behavior and thoughts can be concealed by Southern pleasantries, the pulpits of churches, and suburban attics. I didn’t understand what white supremacy was in 1993, but I knew there was something invisible operating on my body. I could feel that much. My folks never sat me down to talk about it, but I was starting to piece something together from observing their relationships with white folks over the years. I was never called nigger to my face (like my parents were), but you don’t have to be. There’s a zillion other ways to be called that. I was beginning to get that too. I was naive then and running on pure intuition. My need to express some growing unease came out in my pencil, brush, or camera whether I wanted it to or not. He was hardly 3 when he used to intonate I will join army and kill the terrorists and that was the time when the kids of his age didnt even know what terrorists or the army was. We didnt know until his martyrdom that he had scribbled his future long ago in 9th standard while writing an essay My aim in Life where he mentioned that he wanted to become an army officer. This passion was sort of inbuilt in him or he was possibly inspired by patriotic movies and adventurous cartoons. When children of his age were enwrapped in games and playing with toys, he was nurturing his dream of becoming a soldier and eliminating the terrorists. As an academician, I wanted both of my sons to join either Civil Services or Engineering. We even dissuaded him from SSB and tried to mould his interest in UPSC or engineering but he was so passionate about army that he even filled all the forms related to joining army by himself. And if someone tried to convince him to choose another career option, he would always had the same answer that I love my country more than anything else and I will serve my nation by this way only. He was not among those who dreamt of becoming something rather he was among those who whole- heartedly devote himself for the cause and knew how to live his dream. At the age of 16, following his childhood dream, he got selected for the NDA in his first attempt. We never objected to it as it was his childhood dream to serve the nation so we went with the flow. During his training, he was one of the best cadets. He loved adventures, so when he got commissioned, he voluntarily got into the famed Parachute Regiment and joined the Elite 9 Para and took great pride of being a commando of the prestigious special forces.
