This will be the last illustration I share from the short story edition Faktum Novell. It’s for “Som blötsnö” (English appr. “Like Wet Snow”), by Mija Åhlander. It was also the last illustration I finished. . . The story is the only one in the edition on the topic homelessness. For me it was a tough one, because I was reminded of the periods when my father was homeless. It’s not something I speak about so often. Because he was a proud man, and I suppose he wouldn’t want me to. But he passed away ten years ago, I remember him for so many other things and I feel there’s nothing I need to be ashamed of. This work, Make it Through, was the first artwork I made this year, all the way back in January, what seems like a lifetime ago. I was trying to rework the idea that inspired Face It (second slide) to get at something that I missed the first time. The bird in Face It is a Scrub Jay, enduring the storm in the black walnut tree that grew in behind my house in 2009. The bird in Make it Through is a Wandering Albatross- great pelagic voyagers, crossing vast oceans with hardly a wingbeat. That was something more of the endurance that I wanted to convey, and goddamn it has taken a lot of endurance to get through this year up to this point- and its not over yet. No matter how you are engaging with this experience I wish you the strength to go all the way through it and arrive, sunlit and with gentler winds, on the other side. . . . SHIN HANGA & ITŌ SHINSUI (1898-1972) The opening of Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912) led to a unprecedented period of modernization. The world of art was also turned upside down, with mediums such as photography and Western-style painting grabbing the attention. Woodblock printing lost its ground being expensive, slow and considered somewhat outdated. A revival of the woodblock print medium was brought about by the Tokyo publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō (1885-1962). Selling Japanese prints to foreigners, he set up his shop in 1906. He started to commission artists to design prints catering to a foreign clientele. These works were called ‘shinsaku hanga’ (newly made prints) and depicted the Japanese traditional landscape. They would evolve into a new genre called ‘shin hanga’ (new prints): reviving the medium they also expanded it by technical innovation and visual adaptation: larger sheets and blocks were used and the traditional strong contour lines were drastically altered. Different pigments and the usage of Western perspective made the prints modern and refreshing. In 1916 the artist Itō Shinsui met with Watanabe Shōzaburō and started the production of shin hanga. He mainly produced exquisite prints of beauties and landscapes. Like several other artist commissioned by Watanabe, at first he worked in a different medium. Before working for Watanabe, he studied nihonga painting under Kaburaki Kiyokata, who gave him the art name Shinsui (‘deep water’). Shinsui was an incredibly diligent and hardworking artist: “Napoleon only slept two hours a day, and I too would try sleeping only two hours… And I did just that”. His childhood was marked by productivity and optimal time management: during the day he worked at the Tokyo Printing Design Department, followed by night school in the evening. The Great Wave off Kanagawa - by Katsushika Hokusai — Part 2 . 🎨: This painitng surprisingly only took me 3 to 4 days to complete. Not too complicated. Turtle painting still the hardest. However, given that this is originally a print, some details in the print cant be done with a paint brush. Also hard to settle on the colour as different photo of the print shows different colours. Actually spent most of my time mixing for the right colour. Tiny lines, thanks to the toothpicks. La mer is sure a soothing piece of composition but it doesnt fit the vibe im looking for in my video . Inscription: There are two engravings. Inside the box, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji / The Great Wave off Kanagawa. The signature to the leftside of the box indicate his name changed from Hokusai to Iitsu. He often change his name to give a new start to different stages of his artwork, hence, he has over 30 names. . Meanings: It has been proposed that there are contradicting meaning of the waves and Mount Fuji. Wave indicate the unknowns in life while Mount Fuji symbolises peace and eternity. Some suggests that it resembles the yin yang symbol, wave being the yang and fishermen being the yin. . Style: This painting clearly demonstrates the Japanese style display of art but with a hint of western stype as well. Hokusai looked into oil paintings by Shiba Kōkan whose artwork is heavily based on western style. The print shows some Dutch style of employ the lower horizon line leading to the usage of Berlin blue colour bringing out the European style as well . Influenced: Vincent van Gogh was a great admirer of Hokusai. Many suspected that The Starry Night was painted under the inspiration of this print. Claude Debussy, a composer, composed La mer under the influence of this print.
