#MondayMotivation - The passing of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg got us thinking about women trailblazers in Canadian law. In 1891, Clara Brett Martin was rejected as a student at the Law Society of Upper Canada. The Society interpreted the use of ‘persons’ in their statute to mean that only men were permitted. Women were not legally considered ‘persons’ in Canada until 1929. With the help of influential leaders such as Dr. Emily Stowe and Premier Oliver Mowat, Martin was finally admitted as a student-at-law in 1893. She faced obstacles again in being admitted as a barrister but succeeded in 1897. She became the first female lawyer in not just Canada, but in the British Empire. She practised law in Toronto and established her own firm on Bay Street in 1906. She helped pave the way for other women in the profession by hiring female articling students and with her involvement with women’s rights organizations. This Gender Equity Week explore the stories of other women who pushed boundaries and broke the glass ceiling on our Lady Action online tour. Today we wrap up our week-long look at the Levy familys role in saving Monticello by sharing a few images that document their stewardship and dedication, and the changing times as seen on Jefferson’s “little mountain” long after he was gone. We have two photographers to thank for these images: William Roads, who took the earliest known photograph of Monticello, and the prolific Rufus W. Holsinger, whose 1,400 plates and negatives provide a remarkable and often moving record of life in Charlottesville and Central Virginia. - In the Victorian era, it was popular for people to photograph relatives after they had died, often placing them in lifelike poses. Long exposures often meant that the dead were seen more sharply than the living, because of their lack of movement.

#MughalMondays “I saw that broken-down old man – not in a room, but in a miserable hole of his palace – lying on a bedstead, with nothing to cover him but a miserable tattered coverlet. As I beheld him, so remembrance of his former greatness seemed to rise in his mind. He rose with difficulty from his couch; showed me his arms which were eaten into by disease and by flies – partly from want of water; and he said, in a lamentable voice, that he had not enough to eat.” - The Last Mughal, William Dalrymple On 19 September, 1857 The Emperor with his sons and wives was arrested at Humayuns Tomb where he had taken refuge. He was brought to Red Fort and a year later on 27 January, 1858 at 11 am with utmost humiliation his trial started. The same place where he and his ancestors had decided the fate of so many people. He was tried for waging war against the British, a consequence of Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. The trial lasted 41 days, had 19 hearings, 21 witnesses and over a hundred documents in Persian and Urdu (with English translation). Initially, Bahadur Shah Zafar did not understand when he was asked if he pleads guilty. He finally broke silence on 20th day defending himself against these charges. He defended that the young sepoys completely overtook the command and forced his seal on empty envelopes. Zafars ultimate blow came from his most trusted physician and Prime Minister Hakim Ahsanullah Khan who betrayed him by presenting evidence to the court against his own safety. Respecting Captain Hodsons guarantee, Zafar was not sentenced to death but exiled to Rangoon, Burma. Zafar, his wives and some princes began their journey in bullock carts towards Rangoon. He passed away at the age of 87 in 1862. Kitna he badnaseeb Zafar dafn ke liye, do gaz zameen bhi na mili ku-e-yar mein. (How unfortunate is Zafar, he could not even get two yards of land for burial in the land of his beloved.) 🤓 Research by EIH Volunteer @sushobhitarimly227 #history #heritage #arthistory #art #artoftheday #artofinstagram #igramming_india #travelphotography #traverealindia #TheCultureGully #incredibleindia #indianblogger #covid_19 #quarantineandchill #quarantinelife #lockdown2020 - @enroute_indian_history_ on Instagram

//.Thankful to the Women of nineteenth century.// In the early years of nineteenth century When silk fabrics were found expensive Where corsets were made tight enough To keep a good body posture. The only purpose a women had after a certain age Was to be good and disciplined in three roles, To be a good daughter To be a good wife To be a good mother. The need of permission was necessary In a womens life, either if it was for love, work or marriage. Her tears were like dews on grass Which evaporated easily when there was no one to wipe them off. Her voice was like crow but just silent enough that no one can hear. Sometimes it was hard to even recognize what she is and what she had become. The only work she was allowed to do Was weave the colorful threads into a desired beautiful gown. Or to work in a factory with swollen hands. This way or the other, no women was allowed to enter into the real world. When she can be equal to men in all terms.History is sometimes quite confusing But the entrance women for fighting there rights gave a little pursuit of happiness to them Even if it took years to obtain it. It is told to a girl in her early ages, That she must marry well. Because it is believed that, Marriage is an economy proposition In a womens life. She has to marry a wealthy men, Just to save her family from reaching The stages of poverty. It is all about the capability of women That she is only capable to love. But it isnt true, Women have got beautiful minds Which can make a lot of inventions. Great enthusiasm, powerful beauty As well as essence of ambition Which is meant to be brought in the real world. And this emerged in the nineteenth century, Where women gathered courage enough to keep One foot in the queer yet chaotic world. We are thankful to those ambitioned and courageous women of the nineteenth century. To make a beautiful pathway for all the womens in the future, where she can become something and achieve everything. Thankful to Charlotte Brontë, Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott and many other authors to bring the epitome of love, work and domesticity, and to teach the importance of women. Little House on the Prairie is an ever-popular series of children’s books based on the life of one Laura Ingalls Wilder. But who was Mrs. Wilder and what was her life like? And how did she go from being a pioneer to a celebrated author? Born and raised in a pioneer family, Wilder traveled quite a bit throughout her childhood, ever surrounded by nature and her three sisters and parents, whom she loved dearly. She carried these pioneer memories and the experiences she shared with her close-knit family throughout her life, a wealth of stories just waiting to be explored. As an adult, Wilder settled in Mansfield, Missouri, where she finally put pen to paper and began the Little House series. From being an active member in her community of Mansfield to butting heads with her editor of the series (who was also her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane), Wilder undoubtedly led a rich, exciting life, from start to finish. And that isn’t to say of all the tragedies her family faced along the way. Discover the trials that the Wilder family experienced and how the book series came to be.
