Durante i giorni del lockdown ho avuto la fortuna di fotografare una piazza della mia città Prato, Piazza delle Carceri, accompagnata dalle parole di Sandro Veronesi. . . Piazza Santa Maria delle Carceri, a Prato, custodisce un segreto. Un segreto geometrico del quale tutti godono anche se lo conoscono in pochi. È una questione di assi. [...] È stato proprio l’uso che se ne è sempre fatto, qualsiasi esso fosse, a tenere celato il segreto che rende così piacevole usarla. Ora però la piazza è vuota; e così vuota, così metafisicamente vuota come nessuno l’ha mai vista, immaginata o pensata, il suo segreto non riesce più a nasconderlo – anzi, lo rivela sfacciatamente, lo grida, lo sbandiera: d’un tratto la cosa più vistosa di tutte è proprio lo scappellotto con cui Giuliano da Sangallo ha ruotato gli assi del suo capolavoro rispetto a quelli del Castello che le sta a fianco. Milis (Oristano) - Chiesa di San Paolo. Si trova menzionata nel Condaghe di Santa Maria di Bonàrcado. Fu eretta in almeno due fasi: una prima fase risale alla metà del secolo XII e coincide con la realizzazione dello zoccolo che gira attorno al perimetro caratterizzato in altezza da robuste lesene; alla seconda fase (primo quarto del XIII secolo) si deve il completamento in opera bicroma, da altre maestranze di palese educazione pisana, come tante che allepoca lavoravano tra il regno di Arborea e quello di Torres. 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘇𝘇𝗼 𝗗𝘂𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗶 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗼 #𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗚𝗡𝗠 #Buongiorno a tutti gli amici della Galleria Nazionale delle Marche! 📍 Ha inizio oggi un nuovo approfondimento sugli ambienti e le sale del meraviglioso Palazzo Ducale di Urbino, voluto da Federico da Montefeltro​ e descritto come “città in forma di palazzo” da Baldassare Castiglione (1528). 👉 Federico, giunto al potere nel 1444, dette avvio ai lavori per il nuovo palazzo tra il 1454 e il 1457 con la lunga facciata orientale, inglobando alcune costruzioni medioevali preesistenti. 🔎 L’“𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗝𝗼𝗹𝗲”, al primo piano, fu ristrutturato in questo periodo sotto la probabile supervisione di Bartolomeo di Giovanni Corradini detto Fra Carnevale (1414 ca.-1484), con le decorazioni di Michele di Giovanni da Fiesole detto Il Greco (1418 ca.-1480) e bottega. Tutti gli spazi necessari alla vita pubblica e privata del giovane conte presentano una ricca decorazione scultorea, chiaro segno della loro importanza nella celebrazione pubblica del potere conquistato da circa un decennio. In quest’ala del palazzo abitò molto probabilmente la contessa Battista Sforza, l’amatissima moglie di Federico morta nel 1472. Hlavní budova hradu se díky použitým stavebním materiálům (žula) dochovala do současnosti ve velmi dobrém stavu a za nízký poplatek je možné absolvovat komentovanou prohlídku. Od roku 1964 jsou Litice chráněny, jako národní kulturní památka České Republiky. We were looking forward to exhibiting the work of Vincent Fournier from his Space and Brasilia series as well as his latest work Kosmic memories. @vincent_fournier_paris @momentum_fine_art Excited to preview work from Vincent Fournier’s new series “ Kosmic Memories” Kosmic memories reveals extraordinary architectures, veritable totems of civilization of the future erected as so many signs of a possible elsewhere. It is not by chance that this science fiction universe was born between the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1980s, especially in the satellite and non-aligned countries of the former Russia. First of all, the obsession with the cosmos is an old tropism of the Russian imagination (Tsiolkovsky, Sputnik, Gagarin...) and with the rapprochement of the West, artistic creation frees itself from political dogmas. If all these buildings have different functions, commemorative, political, institutional, their forms testify to the same breath: the invention of a future imbued with science fiction. We can see flying saucers, space stations and a multitude of geometrical shapes from another planet. Built mostly in concrete and at the tops of stellar landscapes, a telluric power from elsewhere emerges from these monumental architectures. Their location, while often a place of memory, also coincides with dawn or dusk, with a lateral light that reinforces their strangeness. Freunde der gepflegten Unterhaltung heute gibt es eine meiner Lieblingslocations 🥰 zu begutachten: „The Ghost Church“ 👻👻 Erbaut wurde sie schon im Jahr 1352. Als die Kirche Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts ausbrannte, baute man sie im neo-romanischen und neo-gotischen Stil wieder auf. Im Jahr 1968 dann stürzte während einer Beerdigung das Dach ein. Die Bewohner von ... erkannten darin ein schlechtes Omen, einen Fluch, und zogen es fortan vor, die Messen außerhalb der Kirche abzuhalten. Did you know that Waco once had a Carnegie Library? Opened in 1904 at 12th and Austin Ave, the library was spearheaded by local Waco businessman Isaac A. Goldstein. Goldstein persuaded Andrew Carnegie to contribute $30,000. The Waco Public Library was a place for Wacoans who could not afford a traditional education to access resources and education. 🇮🇹 La Chiesa di Santa Maria del Carmine, in Oltrarno, racchiude al proprio interno uno dei massimi esempi di pittura del primo Rinascimento fiorentino: la Cappella Brancacci, miracolosamente scampata al terribile incendio divampato nel 1771. Vero e proprio scrigno pittorico, la Cappella è adornata da un ciclo di affreschi commissionati nel 1424 da Felice Brancacci, ricco mercante e politico fiorentino, che illustrano la vita di San Pietro, protettore della famiglia. Zamek został wzniesiony w 1377 roku i służył jako komandoria lokalnego zakonu joannitów. W połowie XVII wieku - po zakończeniu wojny trzydziestoletniej - zamek został przejęty przez królową Szwecji i gruntownie przebudowany i zamieniony tym samym w barokową rezydencje. Budynek został opuszczony na początku XX wieku, zaś po 1945 wszedł w posiadanie PGR - mieściły się tutaj biura oraz spichlerze. Na początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych pozostałości po dawnym zamku zostały kupione przez prywatnego przedsiębiorcę, który zamierzał urządzić w nim hotel z polami golfowymi - jednak jak widać skończyło się na planowaniu... ........................................................................................................................................... The castle was erected in 1377 and was used as a headquarter of the Knights Hospitaller. In the middle of the 17th century – after the Thirty Years’ War – the castle became the property of the queen of Sweden and was then thoroughly rebuilt. The building was abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century, however it was owned by the State Agricultural Farm (Polish PGR) in 1945 (and in the following years as well) – there was an office and several granaries. Commissioned by the Kangxi Emperor in the late 17th century, The Kangxi Emperors Southern Inspection Tour tells the story of a journey taken by the Emperor across southern China, chronicling daily life in the towns and countryside along the way. Comprising 12 scrolls which took 6 years to complete, this monumental work served to reinforce the political legitimacy of the Manchu ruler. Ever since its completion, this famous set of scrolls have been a source of wonder for many artists, collectors and connoisseurs, amongst them David Hockney, who was inspired in 1988 to make a film about Scroll VII. Measuring 21-metre long, The Kangxi Emperors Southern Inspection Tour, Scroll VI was cut into sections after leaving the imperial palace during the final years of the Qing dynasty. These fragments have been reunited only recently following their dispersal, and Scroll VI will now be exhibited in its entirety for the first time in over a century at #SothebysHongKong Autumn Sales preview from 3 to 8 Oct at the #HKCEC . La fontana di Lungotevere Testaccio fu eretta nel 1869 sotto il pontificato di Pio IX per celebrare le campagne di scavo condotte dallarcheologo Pietro Ercole Visconti. La fontana è composta di una quinta scenografica in laterizio incorniciata da lesene e volute in travertino e coronata da festoni che sorreggono lo stemma pontificio. This shows the catafalque and pavilion on Public Square for the funeral of James A. Garfield held in September of 1881 following his death by assassination. Over 150,000 people attended. The line for the public viewing was said to have extended all the way to the viaduct bridge. This scene was painfully familiar in the minds of the Cleveland people as only sixteen years prior, a funeral had been held on Public Square for Abraham Lincoln. The Mohawk Trail School was constructed in 1887 as a one room schoolhouse on Mohawk road. In 2014, the schoolhouse was lifted from its original foundation and transported to the site of the current Board Headquarters, at 20 Education Court. I recently learned about Foucaults theory about discipline. One of the things he mentioned is one of the previously used prison systems. The prison was built around a watch tower so that every prisoner could be seen and behavior could be corrected almost directly by sending guarding officers to the misbehaving prisoner. Gradually the tower got some blinds so that the guardings officers had some privacy, they could be gone without the prisoners knowing. Prisoners would act accordingly because they didnt know when they were being watched and felt like this happened constantly. In this dreadful place the same system was applied, only not behaving accordingly usually ended with a bullet through the head. The prisoners here were useless, disposable and were not wanted within the new population since they werent fully human. This of course makes no sense at all, yet this did happen not too long ago. All Saints, Walsoken (1/2) ‘The grandest Norman church of Norfolk’ says Pevsner, and a sublime church it is. All Saints in Walsoken is the last church in Norfolk before one enters Wisbech and Cambridgeshire (cross the road and you cross counties). The 13th century tower is a wonderful example of the Early English style, with a marvellous, recessed west door, three columns either side, topped by detailed leaves. The nave is earlier however, apparent as soon as one enters and spots the arches, with horizontal zigzag patterning, held up by alternating circular and octagonal piers. In the churchyard sits a broken medieval cross, the base of which survives, and a number of handsome gravestones. Murphy house, designed by the Newsom Brothers, once stood at Bush and Jones Streets in San Francisco in 1884. Nearly 100 years later, plans for the lost dwelling were discovered in a thrift store in Eureka, California by Mark Carter. Today is Juneteenth – a celebration created in 1865 to commemorate the eradication of American slavery and is today a holiday to highlight the successes and contributions of African Americans across the nation. For this week’s Hometown Adventures that falls on #Juneteenth, we want to highlight some of these successes in our own region. We want to bring you beyond the Blue Line to the U.S. Canada border in #Waddington, where Black history and entrepreneurship converge with Isaac Johnson, a prominent African American stone mason and master builder. Johnson made his way north, started a family, and made a name for himself as a master craftsman and mason between Northern New York and Ontario, all after casting off the shackles of bondage and his enslavers in Kentucky and enlisting and serving in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Today, his lasting contributions remain in places like Waddington, where the 1884 Town Hall and the elegant Presbyterian Church stand as testaments not only to Johnson’s skill, but to Black excellence in the North Country. #FinsburyCircus is the Square Mile’s largest open space and London’s first public park. The beautiful gardens that we know today with its mature #London plane trees (some over 200 years old) and fine Japanese Pagoda tree, (the only one in the City) were developed in 1815 when Charles Dance the Younger undertook the landscape of the gardens and introduced several more varieties of plants, trees and flowers. Nevertheless, the beginning of its story dates back to 1606 when it was laid out as London’s first public park. The area which was originally part of Finsbury Manor, having existed since 1527, on which the second #BethlemRoyalHospital had stood since 1675. Bethlem Hospital was Englands first psychiatric hospital. The origin of the hospital can be traced in the 13th century. In 1547 it was granted by Henry VIII to the #City ofLondon as a hospital for the mentally ill. In 1675 it was rebuilt in #Moorfields (eventually redeveloped into #FinsburyCircus). It became a London landmark and inspired a number of poems, dramas and works of art. When it was completed in 1676 it was unlike any asylum before seen. Its 540ft-long (165m) façade, complete with Corinthian columns and cupola-topped turret, was inspired by Louis XIV’s Tuileries Palace in Paris. The statues of ‘melancholy’ and ‘raving’ – thought to be the two sides of mental illness – crowned the entrance gates to the hospital. The hospital moved to Lambeth in 1815 and when it moved to Surrey in 1930 the buildings were then incorporated into the #ImperialWarMuseum. Despite all its changes, Finsbury Circus remains an absolute pearl in the City of London. The City of London Corporation acquired this open space by an act of #Parliament in 1900. Kokotova Kula 🏛️ Nekadašnje raskošno imanje sa baroknom palatom i velikim brojem pripadajućih objekata samo je dio bogate zaostavštine čuvenih pomoraca i trgovaca dobrotske porodice Dabinović. Predmetni kompleks nastao je i razvijao se kroz više od 3 vijeka, a smatra se da je baroknu palatu kao izraz vrhunca moći porodice krajem 17. vijeka podigao Đuro Dabinović zvani Kokot. Pored baroknog sklopa i složene hronologije, naročito je značajna zapadna fasada palate, prema moru, koja je izrađena od najfinijeg korčulanskog kamena, sa raskošnim baroknim dekoracijama, otvora prozora i vrata, vijenaca, ograde i konzola balkona. Kompleks danas predstavlja napuštenu ruševinu išaranu grafitima, utopljenu u more okolnih savremenih objekata podignutih na nekadašnjem vlastelinskom imanju, znatno većem od onog koje danas zatičemo. Ipak, njena raskošna ljepota i arhitektonski sklad su neupitni, pa iako je u zapuštenom stanju, predstavlja biser arhitekture Dobrote i Kotora. Did you know that our beautiful Sacred Garden was created in 1920? At one time, the area was just an open space nestled between the bell wall, Great Stone Church and the Sala. Beginning in the fall of 1919 the Mission’s then Pastor, Father St. John O’Sullivan designed the area into the lovely space we see now that has become a popular spot for marriage proposals and family photos. In 2015, thanks to our generous donors, supporters and Mission Preservation Society Members, the Sacred Garden received much needed preservation treatment including cleaning and repairing the now 100-year-old fountain.
