🇬🇧 Today we want to remind you the story of Leon, the gorilla who lived in Loro Parque for 8 years and who then left for South America to form his own family. In addition, we take the opportunity to highlight the work of modern zoos and animal embassies like Loro Parque in protecting biodiversity and watching over the welfare of the animals with such attention. León and his brother Aladín arrived from Israel to be part of the group of single male gorillas. Since Loro Parque is a reserve for the European project of conservation of endangered species, which guarantees and coordinates the survival of the species, Leon was selected after 8 years in the Park as the ideal male for his genetic, physical and psychological characteristics, to join two females and start his own family in the Belo Horizonte Zoo in Brazil. Thus, at present, Leon lives with Imbi and Lou Lou, with whom he has already had three offspring in total. The Indian flying fox (Pteropus medius, formerly Pteropus giganteus), also known as the greater Indian fruit bat, is a species of flying fox found in the Indian Subcontinent. It is one of the largest bats in the world. It is of interest as a disease vector, as it is capable of transmitting several viruses to humans. It is nocturnal and feeds mainly on ripe fruits, such as mangoes and bananas, and nectar. This species is often regarded as vermin due to its destructive tendencies towards fruit farms, but the benefits of its pollination and seed propagation often outweigh the impacts of its fruit consumption. Despite the Indian government classifying bats as vermin in the Indian Wildlife Protection Act, the Indian flying fox is sacred in India. In the Puliangulam village in India, a banyan tree in the middle of local agriculture fields is home to a colony of 500 Indian flying foxes. Rosa and Betty sitting comfortably high in a fig tree in western Uganda. Rosa was an interesting female because she never left her natal community of wild chimpanzees. In order to maintain genetic diversity, the females will leave their family at puberty and go find another community of chimps where theyll live out the rest of their lives. I find it so fascinating that in such a social and bonded species like chimps that after 16 years the females will never see their family every again. Its one of the least studied behaviors in wild chimps because it would require numerous neighboring communities of chimpanzees to be habituated/studied, which doesnt exist yet. 🦏🦏 Today we pay our respects to one of the rarest and most unusual creatures on the planet, the rhinoceros. World Rhino Day 2020 may just be one of the most poignant years in conservation yet; with Covid-19 travel restrictions causing all international-based tourism revenue to dry up, conservation efforts around the world have been negatively effected. It throws the spotlight on the importance of protecting and preserving nature, as well as the fragility of life, animal and human alike. North Luangwa National Park is home to Zambia’s only black rhino population, and with only around 5,500 of this critically endangered species left in the world, preserving habitats like this may be the diference between survival and extinction. However, the harsh reality is that rhino conservation is expensive, the logistics, ranger salaries, intelligence gathering, canine units, monitoring and veterinary bills all come at a cost. The NLCP is doing all it can with the help of DNPW, its donors and partners, but you too can make a difference. De fungerar både som skydd för vind och blåst men ger också ved till spisen och foder till hennes getter. - Tidigare förstod jag inte vitsen att plantera träd ihop med grödor. Vi trodde inte att de skulle bidra till skörden, säger Jane Nekesa som bor i Uganda. Hon tackar Vi-skogen som möjliggjort för henne att lära sig om den viktiga roll som träd har i jordbruk. 🌳 - Jag såg sticklingar som var redo för plantering men hade ingen kunskap om hur jag skulle göra. Nu vet jag hur jag förbereder, planterar och driver upp träd. Jag vet också vilka trädarter som är bäst lämpade för min gård och hur deras egenskaper bidrar till mitt jordbruk säger Jane. Tack vare @postkodlotteriet har Vi-skogens projekt Kvinnliga trädhjältar blivit verklighet. Projektet bidrar till att stödja lokala bönder med småskaliga jordbruk. Som ett resultat av projektet har vi med våra partnerorganisationer bytt ut traditionella spisar till mer energibesparande spisar. De nya spisarna är mer skonsamma mot både miljön och hälsan. 🌿 Jane är stolt över sina framgångar och vill gärna bli känd för sitt arbete och de ekonomiska fördelarna med samplatering av träd och grödor för att få bättre odlingar. Hon planerar i framtiden att satsa på bin och bikupor för att kunna producera honung till försäljning. Det skulle bidra till familjens inkomst och hushåll och för att kunna betala skolavgiften för hennes fyra barn. The increasing human population is encroaching ever deeper into even protected areas of chimpanzee habitats, and large scale logging is now a major threat to the forest primates of Africa. Subsistence hunting of chimpanzees as a source of meat is nothing new, but there is now a thriving but unsustainable commercial market for bushmeat (the meat of wild animals), including chimpanzees. Here she looks out from her overnight cage just after a hearty meal of fresh fruits and vegetables. A baby orang-utan would normally spend 7-8years under the close care of its mother and then not seek independence until around 14-15 years of age and so little Hujan has many years of care and rehabilitation to go before she can once again roam free in Sabah’s rainforests and the reflections of cages in her eyes and memories fade. MY MOTHER Ayako Tanaka, was hospitalised in Izumo, Shimane-ken, Japan on Tuesday the 18th of August after suffering with shortness of breath, chest pains and having been unable to physically move. Her family were unaware of her situation and were only informed on Friday the 21st of August. After having a multitude of tests, plus a biopsy, the doctors discovered that she has a very rare form of thymic cancer which has spread to multiple organs. Very little is known regarding this specific type of cancer but it is extremely aggressive. Ayako is in a critical condition and the doctors have also stated that she doesn’t have a very long time to live, so all they can do is manage her pain. Having been separated from us (her family) for over 6 months, as Ayako initially went to Japan to care for her mother who is sick, it is imperative that we (her daughters) can be by her side supporting her. Due to the current pandemic we need special permission from the Japanese government and visas to enter Japan. Even once we are allowed to fly to Japan we will be faced with having to quarantine for 14 days. With that being said, the hospital in which Ayako is staying are not allowing any visitors. The only option is to move Ayako to a privately rented apartment along with all the medical equipment and medical staff she requires so we can be with her physically. Unfortunately, due to Ayako having to stay in Japan for such an extended period of time, she doesnt have travel or medical insurance. However, the ultimate goal is to hire a medical plane, which costs around £85,000, to take her back to the UK so she can spend her final days at home with family and friends. As you can imagine, this is a matter of great urgency and the amount of funds that are needed for hospital bills & transport is unknown at this time but anything will be greatly appreciated. Wie viele andere Menschen im #Südsudan leidet die kleine Familie auch unter den anhaltenden bewaffneten Konflikten in ihrer Heimatstadt. Jetzt hat sich die Lage dramatisch verschärft. Überschwemmungen haben hunderttausende Menschen dazu gezwungen, ihre Heimat zu verlassen und zu fliehen. Am stärksten betroffen ist die Region rund um das Verwaltungsgebiet Pibor im Osten vom #Südsudan. Viele der PatientInnen, die in unsere Klinik vor Ort kommen, haben so gut wie gar nichts mehr und kaum Zugang zu Wasser, Lebensmitteln und medizinischer Versorgung. Unsere Teams stellen die nötigste Hilfe zur Verfügung, führen Tests auf Malaria durch und behandeln PatientInnen, die an Mangelernährung leiden. Erschwert wird ihre Arbeit nicht nur durch die bewaffneten Konflikte im gesamten Land und die #Covid19 Einschränkungen, sondern auch durch teilweise unpassierbare Straßen. This lioness, part of a pride of ten that had already killed two lechwe, was still hungry so she just walked over to a baby lechwe and walked off with it bleating for its mother. She took into the tall grass, keeping it alive and still bleating - using it as bait to lure the mother nearby to kill her too. The wind changed though and the mother took fright. The lioness kept the baby lechwe alive for 58 minutes before it died of exhaustion. Conservationists have hailed the establishment of the new Dong Chau-Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve as a major step for the protection of Vietnam’s wildlife. The new reserve is home to a number of threatened species, including two species of muntjac deer (Muntiacus vuquangensis and M. truongsonensis), the Annamite striped rabbit (Nesolagus timminsi), the Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica), the southern white-cheeked gibbon (Nomascus siki), the red-shanked douc langur (Pygathrix nemaeus), and the crested argus (Rheinardia ocellata), which resembles a peacock. These connections are incredibly important for ex-situ conservation. 𝐄𝐱-𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 refers to conservation of a species 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 of its natural habitat, as opposed to 𝐢𝐧-𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐮. This is exactly what most wildlife parks and zoos are doing in order to raise the money they are using to carry out breeding programmes and support NGOs around the world.🌍 For example, Cotswold Wildlife Park are actively involved in up to 15 different conservation projects; raising funds and awareness and giving talks and presentations about them. They also strongly encourage education about all their species, including their Southern White Rhinos which take centre stage.🦏 Of course, not all institutions are this committed, so make sure you check out their stance on conservation before visiting any. Yes it may be difficult to see a Lion or a Panda in an enclosure when it should be roaming the savannah or exploring the forests, but to quote Sir David Attenborough - “𝘕𝘰 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵; 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘯𝘰 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘥”. JENNIFER WURRKIDJ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Jennifer is one of the seven women featured in our Kip&Co x Bábbarra collaboration. Jennifer is a Kuninjku artist from the Kurulk clan whose country lies around the outstation of Mumeka in central Arnhem Land. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Sister of Deborah Wurrkidj (another of our collaboration artists), the two women are the nieces (daughters in Kuninjku relational terms) of Australia’s most highly acclaimed bark painter, John Mawurndjul. The two women are renowned, in their own right, for their bark paintings, hollow logs and carved sculptures. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Jennifer’s artwork has been exhibited throughout Australia and her textile art is in the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The title of her artwork is Kunronj, 2007. It depicts important manme (food) from freshwater environments on Jennifer’s country and the traditional tools used to gather them.The kunkaninj (digging stick) is used to dig for wayuk (waterlily) roots, which are eaten fresh from the water or cooked on an open fire. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The kunkaninj is also used to find and dig freshwater komrdawh (long necked turtles) which hibernate on the floodplains during the dry season.Various fish species including the birlmu (barramundi) are hunted with a spear or trapped inside a woven fish trap. Known for their distinctive red fur, orangutans are the largest arboreal mammal, spending most of their time in trees. Long, powerful arms and grasping hands and feet allow them to move through the branches. These great apes share 96.4% of our genes and are highly intelligent creatures. The name orangutan means man of the forest in the Malay language. In the lowland forests in which they reside, orangutans live solitary existences. Here is Moon and Mususu again, wild chimpanzees, having a little group feeding experience in a fig tree. This behavior is referenced in my previous post as wadging and its basically the process of turning fruits into pulp; sucking the juice out and then discarding the dry remains of the fruit in a ‘wadge’. Moon is the 3 year old son to Mususu and he’s taking advantage of his mother’s strong chewing muscles. All apes, except humans, have a tall ridge on the top of their skull called a sagittal crest. This ridge of bone provides an attachment point for tendons which allow powerful jaw muscles greater leverage in chewing fibrous plant matter. Wild chimps can spend upwards of 8 hours chewing a day - something humans avoid by cooking our food and therefore we lost out sagittal crest over the evolutionary timescale. In 2014, @natgeo photographer Ami Vitale witnessed Samburu warriors from Sera in northern Kenya encounter rhinos for the first time on a visit to @lewa_wildlife. These animals had once been a common sight in the semi-arid region, but the last ones were killed by poachers about 25 years ago. Today, thanks to relocation efforts by the community and conservationists, they are once again roaming the vast rangelands of the Samburu people. Organisations behind the effort included the governmental @kenyawildlifeservice and nonprofits, @nrt_kenya and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. The animals’ new home, Sera Community Conservancy, is locally owned and operated by the Samburu. To deter poachers, the rhinos are watched over around the clock by the park’s community rangers, who receive support from the project’s other partners. “This was the first time in East Africa [that] a local community took responsibility for the protection and management of the highly threatened black rhino, signaling a mind shift in Kenya’s conservation efforts,” the Northern Rangelands Trust wrote on its website at the time. Vitale added: “Many Kenyans have never seen a live rhino. Some of the warriors thought they would have spots and others thought their horn would be flexible, like an elephant’s trunk.” It is hard to imagine the sense of wonder these men must have felt that day five years ago, as they gently lay their hands on this most beautiful of creatures.
