Senflammant pour Miles Davis quand le racisme était ordinaire. Quittant Paris pour Hollywood, où ses amours avec Darryl F. Zanuck faisaient aussi grincer des dents. Et alors ? Personne n’aura dicté à Gréco ce quelle devait faire. Penser. Aimer. Chanter. Voilà ce qui nous restera. Plus encore que sa voix profonde et puissante. Plus encore que son chant théâtral et sophistiqué. Davantage même que son allure, incarnation d’une femme française fantasmée, mystérieuse et fatale. Ce qu’elle nous lègue surtout, c’est un formidable esprit de liberté, dindignation et de courage. Chaque rencontre avec elle était ainsi : une fête de l’intelligence, quelques coups de colère face au monde qui va mal, et un numéro de charme auquel il était impossible de résister. Mine de rien, elle soignait son propre mythe. On le savait, et on sen régalait. On aurait aimé que cela ne sarrête jamais. Mais les légendes survivent à l’éphémère. Si Gréco nous laisse un peu orphelins, son histoire na pas fini de nous inspirer. En hommage à la chanteuse disparue mercredi dernier, Télérama publie un hors série piloté par Valérie Lehoux. Des folles années de Saint-Germain, dans le Paris meurtri de la guerre et de l’après-guerre, jusqu’au dernier moment, elle aura vécu une vie sans demi-mesure et affranchie. KOLMANSKOP, NAMIBIA I first discovered this deserted diamond mining village in the mid 90’s and felt that I could spend up to 3 or 4 days here but sadly only had 1 day on that occasion. One of the most pleasing things about Kolmanskop that everything there was about departure and it was being taken over by sand drifts caused by high winds ripping through the village. We opened our doors 6 years ago today. This picture was taken in March, 2014 during the buildout. The space at 114 Nassau Ave was then known as Café Pistachio, a Turkish pastry shop. We kept the bones of the old Pistachio, but much of Greenpoint Fish was built new. Now, after six years of wear and tear we need to do some structural maintenance. We will be closing for one week to get everything done at once. After Sunday August 3rd, we won’t open again until Wednesday August 12th. Thank you for bearing with us! - @greenpointfish on Instagram

five years ago today, my first film premiered @ifccenter in downtown manhattan. it was one of the first documentary films from PUERTO RICO to receive a theatrical release in the united states, and it tells the story of how PUERTO RICAN TRANS QUEER communities organized to pass the first anti-discrimination bill protecting LGBTQ+ individuals in the history of the island. we fought for months to get the film into theaters, and after opening, its run was extended twice due to demand. we had no marketing budget, we had no celebrity endorsements, and we hand-delivered the posters to the theater ourselves. we knew we were on the front lines of fighting for representation, and the experience for me was a horrifying, dizzying baptism by fire. racism is a coercive, multi-dimensional hydra, and up until that point i had the privilege of not knowing as much. so much has changed in that time, yet there’s still so much more work to do. the life of this film has been complicated, and will be articulated in its own time in a more appropriate space, though as the guardian of this work, this anniversary has got me feeling emotional, proud, and more committed than ever. thank you MALA MALA, and the entire MALA team for teaching me how to see, how to do, how to be. vive PUERTO RICO, vive MALA MALA! - @dan_sickles on Instagram

Partition by British film director and artist Ken McMullen, is a complex and visually-striking film based on the Partition of India. Made in 1987, forty years after the Partition, the film was adapted by Tariq Ali from prolific writer Saadat Hassan Mantos famous short story Toba Tek Singh. The plot revolves around a lunatic asylum located at the newly demarcated border, and questions the irrational division caused by Partition. Depicting scenes of the asylum and the conference rooms of the political leaders side-by-side, it aims to juxtapose and mirror the perplexing and drastic events which took place at both ends. The film also highlights the often-ignored historical footnote that even lunatics residing in asylums were not spared from the ruthless divide and were transferred across borders. By focusing on the asylum, the film gives a deeper insight into the impact of the Partition on the marginal members of society. - ...It occurred to the respective governments of India and Pakistan that inmates of lunatic asylums, like prisoners, should also be exchanged. Muslim lunatics in India should be transferred to Pakistan and Hindu and Sikh lunatics in Pakistani asylums should be sent to India. The script of the film was enriched considerably by the outstanding cast, which consisted of actors such as Saeed Jaffrey, Bhasker Patel, John Shrapnel, and the charming Zohra Sehgal, who through their brilliant performances, often lead viewers to ponder over the wider and extreme reality of the Partition. With occasional use of contemporary settings and reliance on the highly acclaimed actors, the film avoids the typical large-scale historical reconstruction, and instead, offers a fresh and alternative take on one of the most defining moments of the subcontinents history. When was a time you discovered something that had been “Out of Sight - Out of Mind”? Continuing from our post about the anchor chain, this time we move to the lowest point in the opposite end of the steam tug Hercules. Here, we explore the “Out of Sight...” propeller shaft in the engine room. This area is often referred to as “shaft alley”. On large ships, it can be a long tunnel-like space leading from the engine room to the back of the ship where the propeller shaft exits out to the propeller. Given her smaller size and arrangement, Hercules’ “shaft alley” is simply the aft end of the engine room itself. It is only visible to the visiting public, though, if they attend a guided tour. This is because it is two levels down and not visible from the main deck mezzanine where they are able to roam on their own. Because of this, it is another underappreciated space. It is here that power from the large main engine gets driven into the water. Except for engineering discerning visitors, many people look upon the engine without contemplating how its power actually transmits to the ocean. In this case, you can see Ranger JR Earnest sitting directly in the aft end of the alley.
