Today we’re back at Borough Market for our post yoga oysters. I’ve been thinking about how Londoners have literally been eating oysters in this exact spot for almost a thousand years. Today we them with stout for a more authentic experience. . You’re probably tired of our weekly date pictures, so I’m posting these pictures of Brown’s Dairy from the Camden archives. I’m a direct descendant of Charles Brown who opened this dairy in 1790. These pictures were taken in 1903, the year it was demolished to make way for the Camden Town tube station which stands to this day! I like to reflect on my family history of running family businesses in this great city. It’s with a sense of extreme pride that I’ve returned to the town where my ancestors grazed their kine on Primrose Hill, among our many links to this ancient city. . Coming in from the colonies and hanging out my shingle on Leyton’s ancient high road is the greatest adventure I’ve ever undertaken. Testing my fortune in this great city is the greatest gift I could ask for. . Full disclosure, my dad didnt build rollercoasters. My great grandfather did. He had no engineering training, but apparently could build almost anything. All of his coasters in the Eastern US and Canada were petty much the same. From the gate, the three attached cars would climb to the top of the first hill - which was the highest - well above the tree-tops. The cars would plunge down the hill at break-neck speed and race up the 2nd hill of lesser height. Then theyd plunge down and up the third which was about tree-top height. FInally, it would rise again to tree top level, swing around a U curve to head back, drop down to ground level, rise again on the smallest hill, take the final dip and head back into the gate. A pretty standard coaster. Now here comes the lesson. My great grandfather invented a device which locked the cars on to the track while in motion. This prevented serious accidents of the cars flying off the track. Unfortunately, he never patented it and, although I understand it was used by every coaster builder at least until the 50s and was the basis for future brake designs, he never collected a nickel. The serene Edwards Gardens is located at 755 Lawrence Ave E (at Leslie St) just outside of the south eastern edge of the Bridle Path in #Toronto. Soon after the War of 1812, a European settlement began in the area. In 1817, the Scottish-born weaver, Alexander Milne along with his family settled the land. They had a homestead and operated a prosperous saw and woolen mill. The land remained in the family for over a century and the original 11-hectare property grew to 240-hectacres. Subsequent owners of the enormous property allowed it to become overgrown. In 1944, Rupert Edwards, owner of Canada Varnish Ltd, bought the original Milne farm. With a vision of a place in the country... with wide open spaces all around, with plenty of room to move and breath, Mr Edwards added landscape features over the next decade. They included a 9-hole golf course, ponds, a large rockery, flower beds and picturesque bridges, as well as being a safe haven for wildlife. Mr. Edwards vision of a public park came to fruition when in 1955, Metropolitan Toronto purchased the property. A year later, Edwards Gardens opened. #WilketCreek is the tranquil watercourse passing through the gardens and park. Until the 1950s, it was known as Milne Creek. The Garden Club of Toronto operated out of the Milne House. The club had a dream of creating a centre to provide Torontonians with horticultural information. The result was the Toronto Botanical Garden. In 1962, a fire destroyed the Milne House. The landmark was estimated to be about 95 years old (slide 7). For six decades, visitors have been enjoying the natural beauty and unique character of the landscape. Edwards Gardens is open daily, from dawn until dusk. Access is free. The name ‘Epping Forest’ was first recorded in the 17th century; prior to this it was part of the larger #WalthamForest. It is commonly known that the #Tudors loved hunting and Henry VIII was no exception. #EppingForest was one of the many hunting forests for the Royal Tudors and a favourite place of King Henry VIII, together with Waltham Abbey, located nearby. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, in fact, which began in 1536 probably because of Henry’s liking for Waltham, it was the last abbey (though not the last monastery) to be dissolved. Epping Forest also has interesting connections with Henry VIII’s love and marriage with #AnneBoleyn. If Henry and Anne visited the forest and went riding together in the beginning of their relation, Epping Forest also marked its epilogue. On 19th May 1536 Henry VIII was there hunting while his wife, queen Anne Boleyn, was being executed in the #Toweroflondon. Queen Elizabeths Hunting Lodge, right next to the Epping Forest Visitor Centre at Chingford, is another #Tudor presence in the forest and a unique example of a surviving timber-framed hunt standing still surrounded by its medieval hunting forest. In 1542, Henry VIII commissioned the building, then known as Great Standing, from which to view the deer chase at Chingford. It was completed in 1543 and renovated in 1589 for Queen Elizabeth I. The former lodge, now a three-storey building, has been extensively restored and is now a museum, which has been managed by the City of London Corporation since 1960. It offers a unique immersion in the cuisine and fashion in Tudor time, together with one of the best views of Epping Forest from the Lodges top floor. It is rare that a ruin like this should decay so gracefully and without the marks of vandalism. The Beelitz Military Hospital in Berlin is in great condition for a ruin, perhaps for the history it represents. In 1916, a young Lance Corporal in the German army recuperated here after taking a bullet in the Battle of the Somme during the First World War. That injured soldier was none other than Adolph Hitler. Walking these empty halls and cavernous rooms may not recall memories of that fearsome dictator, but a calm and unobstructed view into Germany’s often difficult history. - @bandosociety on Instagram

Extraordinary Ordinary Pit village life by Jack Hulme Jack Hulme’s photographs of the pit village of Fryston, on the outskirts of Castleford, are a fascinating, unique and revealing record of a mining community in the mid twentieth century. He was born in the village but, after an injury, was unable to work as a miner. When his wife bought him a Leica camera he became the village photographer, and it is for his black and white images that he is now remembered. The enduring charm of his photgraphs is in the capture of the ordinary – domestic chores, playing in the street, the daily grind. From the attitude of his subjects towards him, you can see he was part of the life he was documenting.
