Pouco antes da quarentena chegar estava com sua madrinha e amigos no show do seu pai, olhamos para trás e nos deparamos com um cadeirante tentando ver o palco. Estava lotado. Avisamos quem estava de costas e não tinha o visto. Um segundo depois todos ali, assim que entenderam o que acontecia abriram passagem. O moço conseguiu um bom lugar para assistir. Não acredito que o que aconteceu foi digno de valorização pois tal comportamento deveria ser normalizado porém é sempre importante observar com admiração as pequenas delicadezas. Impossível deixar de ver a beleza de muitas pessoas se unindo em prol de outra. Lembrei também de que comentei com o nosso vizinho sobre a dificuldade de sair com você no colo da nossa apertada vaga de garagem, desde então ele começou a estacionar o carro colado na pilastra para que nós tivesses mais espaço pra descer. Me recordo também de quando estava indo com seu pai pra casa da sua bisavó, você já estava lá. Na frente do nosso carro havia um outro que virou de repente em lugar proibido. Eu não tinha entendido o que o motorista iria fazer e por estar bem devagar e houve apenas uma pequena esbarrada. Descemos do carro, éramos duas mulheres, nos duas bem assustadas. Ela olhou pra mim e pediu desculpas, olhei pra ela e também pedi desculpas. Eu gostaria muito de ter evitado aquilo. Ela me disse que estava com um bebê chorando no carro, que era de outra cidade e que estava tentando consertar o caminho que tinha errado. Me vi de verdade nela. Nos abraçamos. Nos despedimos e eu gostaria muito de ter falado mais coisas pra ela. Anyone else sad about not being able to experiences the Richmond Folk Festival in person this year? There are so many things we love that we can’t do out of precautions to prevent spreading COVID-19. In conjunction with this years Virtual Richmond Folk Festival I will be creating a socially-distanced participatory, interactive, and iImmersive art installation on Brown’s Island commemorating the things we miss and desire that we have had to remove from our daily activities because of COVID-19. This installation will be a labyrinth of rocks that will form a 100 x 70ft hand. For me what I miss most during this period are the small connections we get with each other through human touch. A hug, high five, or even a handshake plays a big part in connecting us. Catch your kids being good. What does that mean, and why should you do it? We always acknowledge when our kids are doing the wrong thing. When they push or hit their sibling, when they throw their cup across the room, when they do the opposite of what you ask them to do —we always notice. But we don’t always notice when kids are being great, or quite simply when they are are doing what they’re supposed to be doing —Like helping their sibling without being asked, or sitting at the table and eating their entire lunch, or starting their homework without being asked, or putting their shoes on when you ask them to put their shoes on. Yes, some of these things are just expected, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t acknowledge them. These are excellent opportunities to praise your child. If we acknowledge/praise/thank them then we are helping them realize that their decision to listen to mom/dad or help their sibling, etc was a great choice! And they’re more likely to make that choice again in the future. Our lives are pretty crazy right now. Are you working to live or living to work? 🤔 . As a medical student and resident, we were encouraged to dive into medicine, dedicate, and even sacrifice ourselves for patient care and research. Pulling all nighters 🌙 and enduring 36 hour shifts were the norm. When a senior came into rounds so sick he was hooked up to an IV pole, we were impressed. When a co-resident came back to work just a few weeks after having her baby, she was applauded. . It was engrained in us to live for work. 😓💪🏼 . It has taken me 10 years since graduation to retrain myself and realize that this is not healthy nor sustainable. These are the unrealistic expectations that will eventually lead to resentment and burnout. 💔 . As much as my brain still protests, I have to remind myself that it’s OK to relax. That choosing my family over work is acceptable (in fact, should be expected!!!). And that my own well being is just as important as a patients. Moreover I have come to realize that to a job (no matter how amazing and well paid, or how hard I work), I am 💯 replaceable. But to my kids, family, and friends, I am not. . And so while I love being a physician 👩🏻‍⚕️ - it is a job, not my life. I must remind myself that I #worktolive🩺 the life of my dreams, not sacrifice my life and dreams for work... . I have invited some of my medical colleagues to talk about this topic as well! Much as the trees that have sprouted worldwide in her honor, via Ela’s Forest we have grown a symbolic forest made up of touching and masterful works that celebrate her life.
