Shortly before his fifth birthday, the Falkner family relocated to Oxford, where he stayed for much of his life. The Nobel Prize-winning author is best known for his novels that took place in fictional Yoknapatawpha County, which was modeled after Lafayette County, Mississippi. Photo #17 of our Hidden Gems Collection looks north in the 1960s, showing most of Hypoluxo Island. Settlers Margretta and Hannibal Pierce named the island in 1873 with the Seminole word for Lake Worth. Most of the island was unpopulated until snowbirds began building homes, as seen here on the small piece accessed by a causeway. The Town of Hypoluxo consists of .6 square miles on both sides of US Highway One; none of it is on Hypoluxo Island. In the 1930s, Commodore Harold Stirling Vanderbilt chartered the Town of Manalapan, which includes the southern one-third of Hypoluxo Island plus the land from the Lantana public beach to the South Lake Worth (“Boynton”) Inlet. Vanderbilt built his home on the oceanfront. His sister Consuelo Vanderbilt Balsan and her husband bought the south end of Hypoluxo Island and hired Maurice Fatio to create magnificent Casa Alva. Its next owner was developer William E. Benjamin II, who created a gated subdivision and turned the Balsan estate into a private club. He was mayor of Manalapan 2002-2008.
