**Todayβs Real Estate history lesson on Access, Equity and Inequality - This may very well be one of the most important 3 minute listens in your understanding of systemic inequality in America ** β’ β’ Most people know me as a commercial real estate guy. Iβve spent my entire career both envisioning and building communities as well as creating connectivity between real estate projects and the communities in which theyβre located by way of teaching. But along the ongoing topic of access, equity and inequality, I thought this @nowthisnews post was critical to share as it highlights one of the many, yet one of the most impactful, policies in real estate history that had contributed to asymmetry of access, equity and opportunity for black people in America. Richard Rothstein did a phenomenal job outlining this in his book βColor of Law.β Itβs a reminder of my ongoing responsibility to help turn this tide in my industry. Much more to come. In celebration of Earth Day we would like to take this opportunity to highlight the amazing work done to clear the grounds of the fort. The photos below are from the Vice President of our board, Chris Zeeman. Chris, along with a dedicated group, have spent years of their spare time and weekends to clean up the expansive acreage of the fort. Pictured is the Southern Redoubt. The first photo below is from 2003, the second photo is from 2020. Without this team of volunteers, staff and board we would not be where we are today. On the morning of September 11, 2001, the employees of the Church Street Station Post Office, located adjacent to the South Tower, were busy at work inside the building. The Church Street post office was responsible for collecting, delivering, and processing mail from the World Trade Center buildings. As usual, window clerks were serving a steady stream of customers. Letter carriers, who typically began their rounds inside the Centers buildings at 10:00 am, were organizing the dayβs mail deliveries. . Once the first plane hit, a station supervisor and her safety officers sped through the building, escorting employees and customers outside and securing the post office vaults. No one in the Church Street Post Office was hurt, as the building had been successfully evacuated by the time the South tower fell just after 10:00 am. Although badly damaged, the Post Office was still standing. . After the September 11th attacks, the National Postal Museum accessioned into its collection several items from the Church Street Station Post Office. Objects included a damaged collection box from the street outside the post office, a beat-up mail satchel cart used for deliveries in the World Trade Center complex, and register receipt tape dated 9/11/01 8:47am. . The final photograph shows US Postal Inspectors, aided by the National Guard and local police, loading up mail salvaged from the Church Street post office. The mail was taken by truck to a post office at 33rd street, also known as the Farley building, for processing. It was here that New Yorkers stood in lines that weaved around the building, divided by ZIP code, to get their mail for weeks following the attacks. #911 #September11 #USPS #PostOffice - @nationalpostalmuseum on Instagram

Torontos Past Preserved: No better way to end this look at Wellesley St than a visit to the Paul Kane house at 56 Wellesley. The house that Torontonians saved. Built in 1853, it was home to Paul Kane a well know Toronto based, Canadian travelling artist. He built this cottage in his later years as he settled down while having a studio on King St. The house was owned by the family until 1903. It became a church hall for those who were hearing impaired. from 1925-73. The church built a large building in front of the house, effectively blocking it and well was hidden away for so long. When a developer bought the lot, they tore down the church building and discovered the Kane House. With neighbors who wanted the poor condition house demolished, Toronto preservation groups fought back and won !!! The city bough the property with help from the province. A park was built and the house was renovated. The house was included in o a new housing co-op in 1985.
