At a time when we have 5000 less people in custody, Black people still comprise roughly 30% of the jail population but only 8% of the County population. 🥳Happy Labor Day! Today we honor the women and children in eSwatini, Kenya, India, Uganda, and El Salvador who walk for water everyday. The daily journey to a water source is more than just the walk there. It’s also about what it costs to get there, what is found there, and the tools needed to collect and carry water back to a homestead.🏕 The walk:🚶 The average distance that someone in a developing community walks to get water is 3.75 miles. The cost:🤲 The task of collecting water tends to fall on women and children between the ages of 8 and 13. As a result, women are often unable to get jobs or contribute financially to their households. Children are often unable to go to school or get an education due to the thousands of hours they have to spend annually just hauling water. What is found:🔎 [Before Clean Water Well] The water that is found is contaminated. When the only option is to drink and wash with contaminated water, individuals become susceptible to waterborne diseases which kill more children every single year than HIV, Malaria, and all world violence combined. The size of contaminated water sources range from a large creek to something as small as a puddle. In the case that the source is on the smaller side, one may need to dig for a long period of time to expose more water to the surface. [After Clean Water Well] A safe and clean water source that has passed pump tests and water quality tests is found. Disease rates drop by 88% with safe drinking water allowing community members to live longer and healthier lives. Worldwide, agriculture accounts for 70% of all water consumption. Crops and livestock must have water to grow. When a community has a close, safe water source, locally-grown food provides for a sustainable food source. The tools:⚒ Once water is available, the next step is to load the water container on hand and begin the journey back to the homestead. The Greek minister for Asylum and Migration Mitarakis announced in the press on Wednesday that the government will close Pikpa camp by the end of October. Pikpa camp is an open, community-run place where some of the most vulnerable refugees in the island are hosted. For years, many actors have come together in Pikpa camp to support some of the most vulnerable people in the island. The news of the planned closure of Pikpa camp comes after the earlier announcement by the government that Kara Tepe camp, also accommodating vulnerable people, must be closed by the end of December. We reiterate: As long as Europe and the Greek government refuse to provide dignified accommodation and reception to refugees, we will keep defending Pikpa, now more than ever. This is not a struggle to defend a place. This is a struggle to defend solidarity, dignity, equality and inclusion. This is a struggle to resist the toxic agenda of segregation, containment, degradation, repression, xenophobia and hate. We know that we can count on support from all across Europe - across organisations, institutions, politicians and individuals - and we will mobilise this support with all our power. This morning I watched a press conference from a canning redemption center called @surewecannyc in Brooklyn, which got an eviction notice just before the pandemic. This is one of the places where bottle + can collectors trade their loads for the refundable deposits, except this one is a nonprofit that also serves as a community center. . Sure We Can is at risk of losing its 14,000 sqft lot — which takes 11 million bottles and cans out of the wastestream and put $700,000 back into the community, according to a founder — if they can’t secure a $2.3 million nonprofit capital funds grant from the city council before the budget is settled at the end of this week. ($1 million of that would come from the Brooklyn Borough president’s budget, already pledged by Eric Adams.) This is a tough year for budget requests of any form, and the organization is asking supporters to press their city council members in support. . There are other places that take cans. But only SureWeCan has a mission to remove the stigma in working as a collector. “I have noticed over the years that we are treated as subhuman, and that’s exactly the opposite of who and what we are,” said Pierre Simmons, a Brooklyn canner who presented this morning: “We’re independent workers.” He spoke alongside a state senator, a congressman, a boro prez + a former governor of Chicago. (You can watch it on SureWeCan’s FB page) Simmons also has a reply for those that claim canners steal revenue from the city: “Portraying us as stealing from the city is ludicrous. It’s a joke, it’s a further demonization of people who are already down.” . Last year I wrote a story for NYT about how street vendors were also fighting the city for dignity in their profession, yet another flexible, low-barrier-to-entry business available to the most vulnerable people in society. One woman told me that as long as she could vend, she knew she could put money in her pocket. She didn’t have to wait for somebody to hire her, a black woman, an immigrant from Africa with an accent. Been late to update (been waiting till the right time to protect our brave allies). This is from 4th of July (but in the works since even earlier—back in March)! a couple months ago, our networks of nurses and doctors were being walked out in handcuffs for passing out PPE so we had to start an underground bottom-top network (the real roots of PPEforHCP) of free donations that even included the US Veterans Affairs. A few of us on OSCMS spun off a Signals group to design (medical) protective equipment for peaceful protesters (inspired by Hong Kong) as soon as June 1; this was to keep our community healthy/reduce hospital resource impacting (on the bigger scope/support freedom, liberty, and justice). We couldn’t do it without your support, the support of a few brave individuals going against the grain (sacrificing the REAL threat of getting fired for not “staying in their lane” or often worse) in US Customs, UPS, SJPD, hospitals, FEMA, fire department, Hong Kong/mainlanders, etc. Advocates for health and good doctors/nurses and frontlines come from all sides.
