Elements of the British 43rd (Wessex) Infantry Division fighting in Kleve, Germany on February 10, 1945. This was one of two towns (the other being Goch) that the Germans fortified behind the West Wall in the Reichswald Forest. Notice the Valentine Mk 1 Archer tank destroyer at the beginning of the film. The forward-most defensive German unit in the town, the 84th Infantry Division, was essentially wiped out in the fighting, and the British were able to secure Kleve on February 11th. From there the 43rd Division proceeded to advance 4½ miles to the high ground which overlooked Goch. Over the next few weeks the British experienced more heavy fighting as they worked to secure Goch, notably between February 18th and 21st. - @theworldwars on Instagram

Fact Check: Soldier Carrying a Donkey ---- This photo became prominent a couple months ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic, typically captioned with something along the lines of it being a WWII unit that had to restrain the donkey so it wouldnt wander around a minefield and get everyone killed because its always the jackass that ruins it for everyone. By now, @snopesdotcom, @usatoday, and @fakehistoryhunter have debunked most of this. The soldier is not American as claimed in most of the memes, nor is he Polish as stated all over @reddit. This is also not WWII. This is not in a minefield. The soldier is French, particularly of the 13e DBLE of the French Foreign Legion. The war is the Algerian War, in 1958. The hill is nothing more than a hill. Most of the debunking claims this was an act of mercy. What differs is whether the donkey was found and then taken in and cared for or given to the unit by local villagers. Most have the determination this donkey was rescued. The debunking should end there. However, I was contacted by @nbottrie, the grandson of Général de Division Jacques Bottrie, who was a Lieutenant in the 13e DBLE, particularly the unit in the photograph. At the time, a donkey was indeed rescued and did go on to become a mascot, named Bambi. However, this particular donkey was not so lucky. While on patrol, Bottries unit was given a donkey by local villagers. In itself, not unusual as historically soldiers passing through populated area are often given things, ranging from food to flowers, but this incident was photographed. While Bambi may have lived a spoiled life as a mascot, as described in the article by the Daily Mirror, this particular donkey became dinner for the unit when they returned to camp. With this small piece of information, this may explain why the photographed legionnaire chose to remain anonymous and not step forward to accept the award for compassion to animals, as offered by the British Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. - @militaryhistory on Instagram
