Lions Bay Search & Rescue received a call from 6 stranded hikers on the Howe Sound Crest Trail on Thursday. The hikers struggled in the 1 metre deep snow still found around the local mountain summits. LBSAR responded with a rescue team and @taloncopters. Fortunately, there were no injuries, however it could have been much worse. We would like to remind people that there is still a lot of snow in the mountains, and mountaineering boots, crampons and an ice axe are all required to travel safely. As well as the right gear, people must have the skills and knowledge to use it. Era con il figlio un turista di Roma di 57 anni, per un’escursione sul Gran Sasso lungo la Direttissima, per raggiungere la vetta occidentale del Corno Grande in Abruzzo, a quota 2912 metri. Ad un tratto però all’escursionista romano si è staccata una presa dalle mani ed è precipitato giù da 10 metri di altezza lungo la parete rocciosa, finendo contro altri escursionisti che ne hanno bloccato la caduta nel vuoto. Gli altri escursionisti hanno immediatamente allertato il Soccorso Alpino abruzzese prontamente intervenuto con l’equipe medica, a bordo dell’elicottero del 118, decollato dall’aeroporto di Preturo. Il pilota dell’elisoccorso con grande professionalità ed abilità è riuscito ad avvicinarsi al luogo dell’incidente. Sono subito intervenuti i tecnici del Soccorso Alpino e l’equipe sanitaria del 118, che hanno verificato le condizioni fisiche del turista romano, lo hanno stabilizzato, imbracato e tratto in salvo a bordo dell’elisoccorso con il verricello. Ad aiutare l’equipe sanitaria e i tecnici del Soccorso Alpino anche un medico rianimatore del 118 che si trovava per caso sul luogo dell’incidente, per un’escursione lungo la Direttissima con alcuni amici. Il turista romano, che ha riportato alcune fratture ma non è in pericolo di vita, è stato trasportato all’ospedale di L’Aquila. Its one of only 41 programs in the country to meet the stringent qualifications required by the FAA. Here is the full announcement from Yavapai College. - - - Yavapai College Unmanned Aircraft Systems Program Selected for FAA Training Program Prescott, Arizona – Yavapai College (www.yc.edu) announced today that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has selected its UAS Drone Program for the Unmanned Aircraft Systems-Collegiate Training Initiative program or the UAS-CTI. “This opportunity is going to provide more exposure to our students and our program,” YC Aerospace Science Professor Matt Mintzmyer said, “which will ultimately lead to more jobs and options for graduates of our program.” The FAA’s UAS-CTI program recognizes institutions that prepare students for careers in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones. In order to qualify for the initiative, schools must offer a bachelor’s or associates degree in UAS or a degree with a minor, concentration, or certificate in UAS. Schools must provide curriculum covering various aspects of UAS training, including hands-on flight practice, maintenance, uses, applications, privacy concerns, safety, and federal policies concerning UAS. Established in 2016, Yavapai College’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Program instructs students in the design, production, piloting and repair of drones. From its home on YC’s Career and Technical Education Campus near the Prescott airport, UAS students fly specialized industrial missions to learn the ever-expanding uses of drone technology. Yavapai College drones have flown a wide variety of community missions; photographing homes for real estate companies, inspecting solar panels for defects or agricultural fields for drought or drainage issues, or assisting first responders with the logistics of search and rescue. @scifoundation A research project, funded in part by Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF) and the Hunter Legacy Fund 100 Endowment, has tracked the spring migration of a mule deer herd of more than 4,000 from the Red Desert across the Tetons, up to 242 miles one-way. The project is led by the Wyoming Migration Initiative (WMI) and the Wyoming Coop Unit, in collaboration with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and the Bureau of Land Management. The focus of the WMI is to advance the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of Wyoming’s migratory ungulates through innovative research and sharing scientific information through public outreach. Their mission meshes perfectly with the mission of SCIF, which is to ensure the future of wildlife through conservation, education, and hunting. “Safari Club International Foundation is proud to be a continuing supporter of the Wyoming Migration Initiative,” said Dr. Chris Comer, Director of Conservation for SCIF. “Using the latest tools available for spatial analysis, WMI and its partners are at the cutting edge of our understanding of seasonal movements in wild ungulate populations and how those movements influence their management and conservation.” The complexity and scale of wildlife migration corridor projects and research often require collaboration between various stakeholders and ties together a variety of specific issues related to scientific research, advocacy and engagement with elected officials, and public information campaigns. *The 35 Year Old Male Western Lowland Gorilla Makokou airlifted to Onderstepoort *🦍 Makokou, an iconic friend of the Johannesburg Zoo had been suffering from a chronic nasal discharge which had not been responding positively to routine medical treatments. After much discussion, all parties involved decided that the best treatment for Makokou would be to transfer him to Onderstepoort for a CT Scan. As much as Flying For Freedom South Africa would have loved to assist with transporting this amazing animal, this was unfortunately impossible due to his 210kg weight. When we approached pilot and CEO of MCC Aviation, Mike Barnes, he jumped at the opportunity. Prof. Steenkamp and his veterinary team took all precautions to make sure Makokou’s safety and comfort was of the upmost importance. After spending three days lost in the woods below Little White Mountain, a local hiker was located safe and sound. The young man became separated from his hiking companion on Saturday afternoon before bushwhacking his way around the south slope, finally making his way to the KVR Monday afternoon. He was treated by search and rescue medics before being transported by ambulance to KGH. He was tired and hungry, but reasonably well hydrated as he had been drinking from streams during his journey. He was lightly outfitted for what was supped to be a day trips with a sweater and jacket, water and some food. The 24-year-old was also described as extremely fit. Team search throughout the night on Saturday until 4am before resuming the search at 5:30 am Sunday. After no sign of him by Sunday night, the call went out and on Monday Central Okanogan Search and Rescue volunteers were joined by search teams from Penticton, Oliver and Osoyoos, the Shuswap, Vernon, and the local Civilian Air SAR team. A police dog team and RCMP helicopter were also involved in the search. The subject made his way to trestle 8 on the KVR where his cries for help were heard by cyclists. “All of the search teams were extremely happy he was found safe and sound. That’s what we live for,” said search manager Kevin Birnie. “He was a strong, smart young man and he did a lot of things right, but he made a few mistakes. “Even though he was only expecting to be out for a day hike unexpected things happen. “Always file a trip plan be prepared with sufficient food and water and ability to make a fire.” For more information check out https://adventuresmart.ca/ #bcsara #bcsar #adventuresmart - @cosar_team on Instagram

South Westland has really dark lakes (like Lake Mapourika next to our hangar) and there are also blue lakes amongst the Southern Alps (like Lake Tekapos colour).
