It is once again #FEATUREDARTISTFRIDAY and todays celebrated artist is Judith Pond Kudlow. JUDITH POND KUDLOW, a Montana native, now resides in New York City, where she received her art training. Her working method is based on the nineteenth century academic tradition which emphasizes working from life to produce paintings based on precise drawing, careful modeling to produce the three-dimensional illusion, harmonious and accurate colors and values, and compositions based on time-honored rules. Her subjects include figures, portraits, still life, and landscape. Her interest in classical drapery studies has led her most recently to produce a body of work using contemporary draped subjects which she calls “color-form” paintings. Her studio is a second-floor loft in a century-old cabinetmaker’s building in East Harlem which is also the location of her atelier, The NYK Academy. In the November 2011 issue of American Artist magazine, The NYK Academy was named among the top 10 Art Schools in the country. Kudlow was a finalist in the Still Life category for the 9th Annual Art Renewal Center Salon Competition. Thanks to the @columbusmuseum - I got the chance to stand next to a David Hockney portrait of Divine. I stood and stared at the works of Warhol, Harring, Laura Aguilar, Carrie Mae Weems, JEB and over 200 other pieces by LGBTQIA+ artists. I saw original photographs of Marsha P Johnson and Sylvia Rivera and original activist posters with cries for equality, heard the music of ball culture, and was moved to tears by the pieces displayed to mark the AIDS crisis and epidemic in the 1980s and 1990s. Columbus really does it like no other. Now thru October 4, if you are in Columbus, you have a tremendous opportunity to experience the ART AFTER STONEWALL exhibition. This is the largest curated collection of its kind ever, celebrating LGBTQIA+ art, voices, and stories, and it is at OUR museum in Columbus, Ohio. This exhibition had a large showing in NYC for World Pride in 2019 to commemorate and celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and Uprising last year, but the full curated collection is right here and it is not to be missed. Richard Sackville, the 3rd Earl of Dorset, was born in 1589. His marriage to Lady Anne Clifford age 19, was a strategic move instigated by Richard’s grandfather. Anne was the heir to one of the wealthiest families in the north of England and her dowry of £15,000 went to Richard. Richard was a man with expensive tastes and a social standing to maintain. He spent lavishly on clothes, mistresses and gambling and was a close friend of the Prince of Wales. On his death age 34, he left huge debts and had spent most of the Knole fortune. His portrait, attributed to William Larkin, in the Ballroom at Knole was the inspiration to artist, Denise Watson, behind the Fashioned from Paper exhibition. The paper sculpture of Richard is dressed in a standing collar, cloak, jacket and breeches with gold, ribbon and lace trim, tights and pantofle shoes with gold rosettes. The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall visited Northern Ireland today! Their Royal Highnesses thanked individuals who have gone the extra mile during the pandemic. At the @ulstermuseum in Belfast, The Prince and The Duchess visited the Florence Nightingale exhibition. The exhibit celebrates the 200th anniversary of Nightingale’s birth, as well as the contribution nurses made during World War I, World War II and up to the present day. During the visit, Their Royal Highnesses met nursing and midwifery graduates from @qubelfast and @theopenuniversity, who completed their courses early to help respond to the pandemic. 🌳 The Prince and The Duchess also met with some of the gardening team from the Botanic Gardens which house the Ulster Museum. Marcia and I were saddened to learn of the passing of former MLA, cabinet minister and senator, Brenda Robertson. As the first woman elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick and the first woman to become a cabinet minister in the province, Brenda broke down barriers and served as a role model for generations of women. She was a dedicated and respected leader, not just in our province, but across Canada, serving 20 years in the Senate. She was a member of both the Order of New Brunswick and the Order of Canada in recognition of her commitment to public service. On behalf of all New Brunswickers, I offer my sincerest condolences to Brenda’s family and friends. Much of my work is related to travel. But since COVID-19, travel for me is impossible. If I leave Malaysia I have to quarantine for two weeks in a hotel on my return. This makes it impractical to do any traveling. So I have had to reinvent myself as a headshot photographer. Why not? I have the lights and the backdrops and most businesses still need headshots for their websites. But I need to put together a portfolio. So I’ve been taking pictures of friends and local business people here in Penang. Meet my new friends Pauline and Ronan. They are expats here in Penang. I only met them recently, Pauline is the wife of a Ronan who is on the Penang Pairates Dragon Boat team with my wife. In a recent interview I was asked which one of my thousands of celebrity portraits is my favourite? I’m asked this A LOT but there isn’t, for me, an easy or straightforward answer. But on this occasion I put my hand in the lucky dip of my back catalogue and pulled out this shot of #LaurenBacall. I’m pretty sure most people under 40 will have no idea who Lauren was, but she was a trail blazer in movies in her early years. She was billed as one of the beautiful women in the world when she filmed ‘To Have and Have Not’ in 1944. And this #HowardHawks movie was where she met the love of her life #HumphreyBogart. What I adore about this Lauren (or Betty as she preferred to be called) shot is the honesty in the face. Every line and crease on her paper thin skin tells a story. She had no cosmetic surgery to hold on to her youth nor did she believe in skin cocktails or potions to plump and revive. She was just happy looking the way she looked. And she was very beautiful, right to the end. Betty was 88 in this portrait of her. In the world of ‘scalpel help’, be Bacall! Princess Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise, the second child and only daughter of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, was born on 15th August 1950 at Clarence House in London. Some facts about Her Royal Highness: • Princess Anne is the seventh Princess Royal in the British Monarchy, having held the title since June 1987. It is a title traditionally carried by the monarch’s oldest daughter and held for life. • Princess Anne started undertaking public work at the age of 18, when her first engagement was the opening of an educational and training centre in Shropshire in 1969. • Princess Anne is an extremely accomplished equestrian - at the age of 21 she won the European Eventing Championship and was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1971. She also competed at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games as a member of the British Equestrian team. I’ve been a bit quiet on these squares this week as I’ve been mentally preparing myself for my daughters uni departure this weekend. It’s such a funny mix of emotions, from being full of pride to see her gain this new independence and start a new life for herself, excitement knowing I’ll have more freedom alongside a real churning in my stomach knowing that’s my last child to leave. I’ve decided that it’s ok to sit with all these feelings and sometimes a bit of quiet reflection is needed before we all move on to the next chapter. My Granny was one of the first people that let me take her portrait when I was just starting out in the photography world. I cherish all our little shoots over the years. This portrait of her is from a decade ago and features her holding a framed portrait– which was taken when she was 18 years old. On this day on June 13, 1774, the Rhode Island legislature passed a law banning the importation of slaves into the colony, becoming the first of Britain’s North American colonies to do so. This law was one of the first anti-slavery laws in the United States. Before this, there were 4 different ports of entry of enslaved Africans in the transatlantic trade located in Rhode Island. However, leading merchants, including John Brown and George DeWolf, continued to engage in the slave trade. One of the leading figures in Rhode Island behind abolitionism was Moses Brown, John Brown’s brother. The Brown family owed much of their wealth to their mercantile success in the slave trade in Rhode Island. Becoming deeply disturbed by the plight of the slaves in America, in 1774 he converted from Baptist to Quaker, and threw himself upon the abolitionist cause. In 1787, he helped pass a statute forbidding anyone to outfit slave voyages in Rhode Island ports. In 1789, Brown helped found the Providence Society for Abolishing the Slave Trade to help enforce the anti-slave trade legislation. Moses Brown’s house was a major stop on the Underground Railroad. Providence was on route from New Bedford, where escaping slaves arrived by ship, to Fall River and then Rhode Island. Moses taught his son, Obadiah, to actively oppose slavery and he did just that, sponsoring free blacks to help them find employment, helped with their finances, and backed them up in legal disputes. Rhode Island eventually abolished all slavery and emancipated all slaves in 1843, with the adoption of the new state constitution. Pictures: 1. Moses Brown 2.
