The Jaguar E-Type is sixty-years old next year, which is in itself quite unbelievable when you think of the inevitable impact that a car of such distinction and beauty would have today. I cannot begin to imagine the impact at the launch in Geneva and the subsequent “must have” celebrity list of wannabe suitors. By combining Malcolm Sayers’ cool aerodynamic design with Sir William Lyon’s intuitive styling it dominated the show. Enzo Ferrari described it as “the most beautiful car in the world”. Well that is subjective, but I’m not going to disagree. It is certainly the most iconic and the most famous car in the world. Whilst I’ve never owned or even driven one, then I think I owe it to myself to get the chance before our sixtieth birthday! At sixty the car will still have surviving original owners, a wealth of memories, and they appear to be attracting the highest values ever. I’m no expert but E-Types don’t particularly achieve premiums as a result of low volume production or product placement or exclusiveness. It transcends those kinds of elitist and frankly gross markers, notwithstanding certain versions attract premiums. I think it just sells for lots of money because it’s beautiful. Like drop dead gorgeous beautiful. My sister said my Aston Martin DB7 is like that to her. She thinks that (my DB7) is the most beautiful car she has ever seen. But she isn’t Enzo Ferrari, and whilst I don’t think she is far wrong, then as beautiful it is, then it’s launch wasn’t in 1961 when it really must have felt like the E-Type had arrived from space! I can only imagine seeing one for the first time. Here is Sir William Lyons with his creation in Geneva in 1961. What was he thinking! The sense of pride must have been overwhelming. Sir William Lyons was widely considered a fair, but autocratic leader who managed the company very tightly. He was responsible for the styling of almost every new model introduced and remained in a consultative role to Jaguar long after his retirement. 55 years ago the last Aston Martin DB5 rolled off the production line - well, last-ish. From its 1964 screen fame in Goldfinger, the DB5 also made an appearance as Bond’s ‘personal’ car in Pierce Brosnan’s Bond debut, GoldenEye, and came complete with a fax machine - very nineties. And when we say the 1965 models were the last-ish, it’s because Bond films producer EON Productions teamed up with Aston Martin this year to create just 25, very limited edition replicas of the Goldfinger DB5, complete with (sometimes simulated) gadgets - see second photo (courtesy of Aston Martin Lagonda). The AR Motorsport Morgan Challenge was due to race at Pembrey this weekend. We last raced there in 2002. Mary is seen here, in the wet, in her Plus 8 named Gertie. Gertie is a very early car, and together they have had great success, including a podium in the 1980 Willhire 24 Hour Race. Its combination of beauty, high performance, and competitive pricing established the model as an icon of the motoring world. The E-Types claimed 150 mph (241 km/h) top speed, sub-7-second 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) acceleration, unitary construction, disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, and independent front and rear suspension distinguished the car and spurred industry-wide changes. The E-Type was based on Jaguars D-Type racing car, which had won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three consecutive years beginning 1955, and employed what was, for the early 1960s, a novel racing design principle, with a front subframe carrying the engine, front suspension and front bodywork bolted directly to the body tub. No ladder frame chassis, as was common at the time, was needed and as such the first cars weighed only 1315kg (2900 lb). On its release on 15 March 1961 Enzo Ferrari called it the most beautiful car ever made. Tiny, pure of line and yet technically advanced with its two litre overhead cam V12 it’s hard to imaging the impact the 166 made when it debuted in 1949. This, the third Barchetta ever built, raced in period twice in the Mille Miglia in both 1949 and 1951, then ended up in Paris for a number of years where it was owned by American Jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player Don Jerrer. Like the Delahaye a few days ago it’s seen here at the 2019 Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace. Paolo Marzotto (9 Settembre 1930 - 26 Maggio 2020) Questa notte, è venuto a mancare uno degli ultimi eroi delle corse automobilistiche anni 40/50. Paolo Marzotto. Il più giovane dei 4 Fratelli Marzotto, i cosiddetti Conti Volanti, meritò la fama di stradista italiano più veloce. Paolo sforò più volte la vittoria assoluta alla Mille Miglia, sulle Ferrari Sport della Scuderia Marzotto o addirittura sulle auto Ufficiali. Memorabile ledizione del 1955 dove, prima del ritiro per lo scoppio di uno pneumatico dopo Verona, aveva fatto registrare una media record di 198 km/h. Sempre su Ferrari, nel 1952, divenne Campione Italiano Sport, vincendo il Giro di Sicilia, il Giro delle Calabrie, la Coppa dOro delle Dolomiti e al Circuito di Senigallia. Nel 1953 bissò il successo alla Coppa dOro e al Circuito di Senigallia. Il 1955 sarebbe stato lanno della consacrazione. Ferrari gli preparò una monoposto per il GP di Monaco ma il Conte arrivò in ritardo per le prove e non corse: lauto, affidata a Trintignat, vinse la corsa. Partecipò alla 24h di Le Mans, in veste di pilota ufficiale, come compagno di Castellotti. Poche settimane prima delle gara Paolo conobbe una giovane ragazza francese, che durante la gara, si trovava nella tribuna centrale. Dato che al pilota sarebbe toccato il secondo turno, invitò la ragazza al box Ferrari. Un giro prima dellincidente, Castellotti si fermò al box per affidare la macchina a Marzotto, ma lauto era consumata, tanto che dopo pochi giri, si fermò al box, ritirandosi. This weeks Throwback Thursday features our 1974 Jaguar E-Type Group 44 Racing Car. In 1965 Bob Tullius founded his own racing team, Group 44 Inc. who would go onto winning hundreds of races and 10 SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) National Championships. Specifically to this E-Type, in 1975, the team won seven races, including the Road Atlanta National Finals. The teams success brought Jaguar back to Le Mans in 1984, for the first time in 27 years, with two Jaguar XJR-5 cars.
