It is not just entertainment, not just beautiful craftsmanship. It is our abstract reality. I often come back to the expression of the Life of a Tree. I relate to it deeply because it symbolizes birth, growth, baring fruit and eventually death to me. That is how real I want my relationship with dance to be. Im not trying to be cool, good, the best dancer. I want to have had a conversation with myself... One that connects me to the bigger picture. Hello folks, hope you are well! Ive been posting some short videos on my Facebook page, and thought Id post them here too! They are short movement games that I play, that maybe you might want to play too. These mostly come from the “reverse engineering” school of learning: things Ive seen amazing dancers do and tried to figure it out how I might get a little bit of that into my dancing! No claims for originality. Many claims for copyright infringement. First up: whole body reaching. “Project!” encouraged every dance teacher ever. The game starts with reaching with your fingertips (or extremity of choice) to the side, adding joint by joint; for example wrist, elbow, shoulder, spine up to down, hips, knees and ankles. What might help distribute the stretch through the whole of you? Nothing ever got worse by breathing. Which joints does it help to extend, which to soften and flex? You might look in the direction youre going, or your head might help in other ways. From my garden I can see a crane, it has a massive concrete ballast on one side and an arm reaching way out on the other. I wonder where the ballast is in me. Your weight might move onto your foot (or other support) in the direction youre reaching, observe if your other leg or side starts to tense and lift, like a see-saw, that might be a good moment to play with being completely relaxed in that leg/side. It might be an invisible change. Reaching isnt travelling, you need a place to reach from. You might need to reach in two opposite directions to get where you want to go. Does it matter if your extremity actually gets further away? Maybe a more useful question is: do you taste reaching more or less fully? Time for rhetorical questions. Can you do this in any direction? Can you arc around your periphery? Can your whole being transform with each new direction or do bits get left behind? (I often forget to shift from one foot to the other). Maybe this is a reach to something in particular, or reaching for the sake of reaching. - @benmcewendance on Instagram

QUARANTINE Freestyle. . Throwback freestyle from May. I told myself to keep the movement internal as much as possible. Play with the the sound of her voice, touch some of the beats, not all and not for very long. I also told myself to feel it all: the movement going through my body and feel where the energy doesn’t go. I was actually in some pain this day. I had a knot on my (right side) lower back from dancing on concrete too much earlier that week. So this day was just about moving through my limitations but respecting them at the same time. I began to laugh a little because I was about to dive deep into some external movement because the beat called to me but caught myself haha. . Waking up my body was the name of the game. Thank you for watching! Just something playful I wanted to share :) Ps. I want to point out the yellow square 😁 I forgot my speaker and had to resort to Bluetooth headphones and screen recording myself in camera mode 😂 #quaratinecreativity for the win. Straddle Jump to Handstand ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If your straddle and pancake flexibility is well developed, these straddle jumps to handstand are often easier than the tuck jumps to handstand. Pushing down into the ground from the trapezius is, again, key to avoid leaning forwards excessively when jumping. As you jump, pull the legs out immediately and keep the knees locked. Imagine drawing a large circle with the legs.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As in the tuck jump, catch the balance in straddle for a split second before bringing up the legs. The straight leg handstand has a higher centre of mass so make sure you are in balance before you straighten. When mastered you can easily go directly to straight, but stopping in straddle will let you know whether or not your jump was sufficient to bring your centre of mass over your base of support. Press To Handstand Drills 🤸🏽♂️ ——• How long have you been practicing handstand, & what are your current goals? The straight arm press to HS is a move that fascinaste me. The moment I saw it for the first time, I was like “how the fuck does your feet get off the floor?” — it literally seems impossible the first time you try it. However, with smart and consistent practice, it’s possible. I could talk for ages about ways to achieve this move. You can search on my YouTube Channel many routines (search: Saturno Movement Press to Handstand), & if you are a member of the Academy, you have even more of those. But for the simplicity of the post, here are 8 moves that if I could only pick that much, these would be it. I’ll do my best to fit some info about each move, but I can only write so much, so any further questions shoot them bellow =] ——• 1. Plank to Pike Slides: start on plank and slide to the most “compressed” pike position you can manage. Lean forward the entire time and stack hips on top of shoulders. Round your spine and engage those abdominal muscles. 2. Tripod Headstand Presses: this was a game changer for me. Any headstand variation will work. If you can’t press up, work on the negative portion. If you can control the negative, work on headstand holds until you can. 3. HS Negatives / Straight Legs: my personal favorite. Use a wall for this one so you can do a “decent” amount of reps. Lean forward to contra balance the weight of your legs. 4. Seated Pike Compressions: compress, compress, & compress some more. The closer your hands are to your hips, the easier the exercise. 5. Suspended Elevated Pike to L-Sit: this is a tough one, but it’s magic. The higher the elevation the easier. You can also use parallettes. 6. “Lolasana” Hold: a Yoga pose that will strengthen your wrists in full extension (very needed for the press) as well as conditioning your scapula. Keep those shoulders protracted. 7. Pike Walks: same cues as exercise # 1 — even if your feet don’t lifts, it’s the action of leaning and compressing that truly matters. They’ll lift eventually. 8. #30daysofdance2020 Day 25 Challenge: Flow Today I share with you another type of conversation I can have during my practice. U have seen me love, u have seen my express my pain, my joy and my spirit. Today was yet another difficult day and I got over it so decided to confront my demons. So today I fought. Now about the topic at hand. Flow has many definitions in our scene, fluid movement, style, riding the music and transitioning to name a few. There is not a single skill or technique that covers the whole spectrum of flow, just like with groove it has many forms, shapes and elements. Alright alright... so this is my #doingdaily day 1. Before I get into that, thanks to @napalmquist for such a fun and supportive class. Even though I took his NYC class regularly before I left for Barcelona, I never learned this choreo and I was excited to try it out! Definitely fumbled through it, but I’m learning to enjoy the process. (Hope that y’all enjoy the mess ups 🤗) So what is doing daily? Inspired by @danadaners podcast @wordsthatmovemepodcast , I will be doing a challenge where I post a movement video daily for 32 days (because 30 days already scares me, so why not do 32?). Why am I doing this? 1. Because it absolutely terrifies me. 2. Accountability. I get caught up/distracted and don’t dance as much as I would like. 3. I love seeing other people share their videos, so why not join in on the fun?! 4. To get over the idea that everything has to be “perfect” Honestly, I’ve been putting this off for about a month, so today I decided that it was now or never.
