Last week we shared the interior of 383 George Street, here is what it would have looked like from the street around that time. The lion featured on the receipts also hung above the entrance to the store! . This section of the street was built for Thomas Bradburn around 1860 and was likely designed by John H. Selkirk from Buffalo, New York. . Next door to Fair’s was the H. LeBrun and Co. menswear store at 381 George Street. LeBrun’s was established in 1873 and later occupied the spaces beside the Bank of Toronto on both George Street and Hunter Street from the early 1900s until the late 1920s. The owner, Henry LeBrun, was heavily involved in local sports and managed Peterborough’s very successful field lacrosse team for two decades! . 📷Peterborough Museum & Archives 2000-012-000360-1 . #throwbackthursday #tbt #ptbo #ptbocanada #coolsign #coolsignage #historicstorefront #downtownptbo #ptbohistory #heritage - @doors_openptbo on Instagram

Here’s a tasty #ThrowbackThursday: Abilene’s beloved Candies by Vletas was founded by two Greek brothers, George and Nick, who brought their confectionary talents to Abilene sweet tooths in 1910. The shop and café were located at the corner of N. 1st and Pine streets, a plum location when the Bankhead Highway was constructed and the first road trippers rolled into the city. These days the candy makers have found another sweet spot, a restored railroad building across from the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, not too far from that original shop. The Vletas brothers passed down their family secrets through generations, and the candy is renowned as a Texas treat. Their famous pralines graced the inaugural dinner of President George W. Bush, and travelers and locals alike stroll in to savor their sugary (and sugar-free) delights. Open Mon-Sat. Proud to announce the acquisition of one of the most prestigious land sites in Shanghai. This jewel lies in the center of Shanghai along Huaihai Road, the most romantic and heritage boulevard. Huaihai Road was once Avenue Joffre, named after the French general Joseph Joffre in 1922. By the 1930s, western-style restaurants, night clubs and dancing halls filled the district with music spilling out to the streets. It was adored by the most cultured and fashion-forward crowd in Shanghai so much that it was known as the Oriental Avenue des Champs-Elysees. We create, we celebrate and we reinvigorate the glamour and romance of Huaihai Road’s golden days. The intersection of George Street and Brock Street looked very different 150 years ago. The building on the southwest corner was once an early example of the Second Empire style in Peterborough. It was owned by George A. Cox, who was a prominent businessman and politician. By the 1950s, the upper floors were removed, and the facade changed considerably. It’s hard to believe this is the same corner! 📷 Peterborough Museum & Archives DC161 - @doors_openptbo on Instagram

500 artifacts from the Homestead’s collection are now online as part of the L. A. as Subject Community Histories Digitization Project, which aims to increase access to stories about underrepresented groups in the Los Angeles region from the late 19th-early 20th centuries. Thanks to generous support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the @usclibraries have digitized portions of numerous regional collections for this project. Among the items featured from our collection are an 1863 Democratic party poster written in Spanish and a 1928 photo of the black-owned Hotel Somerville, later the Dunbar, a key center of African-American life in Los Angeles. Name that famous movie line: Youve got a yellow fever, and the only prescription is ex-votos. That was, of course, Christopher Walken playing St. Roch in Any Hurt of Pestilence, a completely made-up movie imagined by THNOCs Visitor Services Department. Follow our link in profile to read more New Orleans stories that they think should be movies (and to see who would play some of our historys most interesting characters). - Any Hurt of Pestilence would be set during the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1868, when Rev. Peter Thevis (portrayed in our imaginations by George Clooney) sought to protect his parishioners from the outbreak. Thevis made an appeal to Saint Roch (Walken), patron saint of the diseased and disabled, to heal the sick in his church, promising to erect a chapel in the saint’s honor. Miraculously, no one in Thevis’ church succumbed to yellow fever. Thevis, making good on his promise, laid the cornerstone of what would become the St. Roch Chapel on September 6, 1875, and the legendary St. Roch Cemetery soon sprang up beside it, shown here in the 1990s. For generations, the cured left tokens—also known as ex-votos—such as crutches or prosthetic limbs on the altar of the chapel. #historicalfiction #stroch #visitthnoc - @visit_thnoc on Instagram

Established in 1860 and incorporated in 1885. The complex stretched along 5th Street between Grand, Clinton, and Willow. ✏ The company was famous for their Venus Pencil. A pencil that was made in 17 different degrees, from the very softest to the very hardest degree. The company even changed their name to Venus Pen & Pencil Company in 1956. ✏ In 1963, operations in Hoboken were coming to a halt. Antiquated buildings, taxes and old machinery were all factors to the companys relocation. 600-700 union textile workers (77a) were made aware of the change and efforts were made to keep operations in Hoboken. ✏ The efforts were fruitless, and later that year the company moved out of Hoboken. Almost immediately, the complex was demolished to make room for residential towers, known as Church Towers. Today the company is a subsidy of a German pencil company called Faber-Castell. ✏ #HobokenHistory #Hoboken #History #NewJersey #NJ #NJHistory #AmericanLeadPencil #PencilHistory - @hobokenhistory on Instagram

A double bill for our Historians in Residence tonight First up is Cathy Scuffil at 5 with her talk Water water everywhere. The single biggest difficulty encountered by the Rathmines Township was in obtaining an adequate and suitable water supply for the thirsty citizens of the ever expanding Township. This talk looks at one initiative by the Township to obtain a supply from the Grand Canal in the Gallenstown area of Ballyfermot, and highlights the evidence of these works still in the area, hiding daily in plain sight. Then at 7 is Mary Muldowney with Joe Moore and the Sunday Journal: The Insurance Man who wanted to run a newspaper. In July 1980, the Sunday Journal newspaper was in danger of closing down because of its financial difficulties when Joe Moore stepped in as the new backer. At the time, he was head of the PMPA (Private Motorists Protection Association) and had no experience of the newspaper business. This talk will outline Moore’s acquisition of the Sunday Journal; the editorial policy he imposed, changing it from a ‘farming paper’ to a general tabloid with a focus on motoring and his business and political dealings before the paper closed down completely in June 1982. The final move happened in 1947 to 408 Broadway along with a name change to the Silver Tray Tavern around 1954. Louis Hoffman purchased the cafe from Solow and closed in 1976. On this day, 1 October 1931, hundreds of tenants of an estate in Neukolln, Berlin, launched a rent strike to pressure their landlord into evicting the SA: Nazi Brownshirts. However, most of the tenants were on welfare so could not actually withhold their rent and so eventually the strike crumbled unsuccessfully.
