Alexandr Rodchenko / “Books Please! In All Forms of Knowledge” / 1924 / Soviet propaganda graphic design / 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗠 One of the 20th century’s most influential movements amounted to nothing less than an attack on art. In 1922, a Russian artist named Aleksei Gan penned a manifesto that began with words in glaring uppercase: “WE DECLARE UNCOMPROMISING WAR ON ART!” The Russian Revolution had taken place five years earlier, in 1917. The country was in the process of freeing itself from the grips of a powerful ruling elite; now it would revolutionize Russia’s cultural life, too, and put art to work in service of a new, Communist society. Gan and his artistic compatriots—including V.Tatlin and A.Rodchenko, considered the founders of the movement known as Constructivism, as well as V.Stepanova, L.Popova, El Lissitzky, and others—sought new art forms and modes of making art to serve the masses. Art, they believed, had no place in the hermetic space of the artist’s studio. Instead, it should reflect the modern, industrial world; be formulated in laboratories and factories; and be deployed as an active agent in the broader Communist revolution. The movement emphasized building and science, rather than artistic expression, and its goals went far beyond the realm of art. They soughts to influence architecture, design, fashion, and all mass-produced objects. In place of painterly concerns with composition. A new, Constructivist art would look toward industrial production; approach the artist as an engineer, rather than an easel painter; and serve the proletariat. Constructivists used sparse, geometric forms and modest materials. Its called Constellation and I am blonde AND an Aquarian, so...theres THAT. Airplanes take us to dream destinations.. They also bring the people we love to us. They are majestic and powerful, but they are also beautiful at rest on a tarmac. No matter how many times I have flown, I am always filled with a sense of magic and wonder that such a thing is possible. I am thrown back to that scene in Mary Poppins, when laughter causes human liftoff. I love the beautiful curves of an airplane and the cross-like intersection of wings and body, brings imagery of angels in the clouds. The special backstory for this particular choice is that it, after Pearl Harbor, when the United States entered World War 11, Lockheed Aircraft Corporation assembly lines were taken over by the American government for the war effort. The Lockheed L-049 Constellation was requisitioned and designated as the C-69 and was to be used for equipment and personnel transport by the United States Army Air Forces. In 1944, Howard Hughes, who was one of the key people in the development of the Constellation, and owner of TWA Airlines, flew the aircraft from Burbank to Washington DC in less than 7 hours as a publicity stunt. The aircraft was painted in full TWA livery, still retaining its military serial number. His co-pilot was Jack Frey, President of TWA, and Hughes then-girlfriend, movie star Ava Gardner, was also along for the ride. Another C-69 arrived at Wright Field and picked up Orville Wright, who was allowed to control the aircraft momentarily, on what would be his last flight. A 3rd Constellation was sent on a Transatlantic flight from NYC to Paris in 1945. The flight took less than 15 hours and was flown by a TWA crew. Intriguingly magnificent. Hannah Höch 1889-1978 ( Anna Therese Johann Höch) artista plástica y fotógrafa, fue una de las primeras exponentes del fotomontaje, el collage de fragmento de fotografía. Conocí sobre ella cuando en la EPA descubrí Las Vanguardias con sus “ismos” De más esta decir que amo su obra y su técnica que hoy usan tantos fotógrafos y diseñadores. Admiración por su propósito e interés en los sufrimientos específicos y personales de mujeres, queriendo mostrar una “mujer nueva” usando ironía para criticar los exteriotipos de la mujer de la época y denunciar una sociedad machista, asumiendo temas como la andróginia y el amor lesbico. Para deshacer los limites impuestos, corta trozos de revistas, mezcla cuerpos de diferentes culturas y colores. Combinó arte, diseño y técnicas artesanales como el bordado. Un poco de historia Junto con su amante Raoult Hausmann apasionados por el dadaísmo de Berlín se volvieron maestros del nuevo medio creando formas oníricas y llamativas. En 1912 con 22 años se fue de su casa para estudiar en la Escuela de Artes Aplicadas en Berlín, experiencia que se vio mutilada por la Primera Guerra Mundial. Mas adelante en 1916 hacia su arte experimental mientras trabajaba como artista gráfica y diseñadora de estampados para una editorial que entre otras cosas publicaba revistas femeninas. En la historia del movimiento dadaísta de Berlín ella era la única mujer y fue, por ser mujer, menos visible que los hombres. La década de 1920 vio a la artista independizarse, convirtiéndose en integrante del Grupo Noviembre, grupo radical de aristas formado con el despertar revolucionario de noviembre en Alemania. Durante 1926-1927 conoció a la poetisa Til Brugman y se mudó a La Haya con ella.
