Photographer #aprilbencze brought up this issue many years ago and I have deliberated over it countless times. This was a picture of a wolf that I took near a seal that I hoisted in a tree. Was this ethical and what should I do with the image? I had been placing camera traps around the island on wolf trails for many years, mostly to follow the size of the pack from year-to-year and to see if new pups had been born. In this case a harbour seal washed up on the beach near one of the wolf trails and I only had a few hours left on the island before I had to leave. There were boats in the area and potentially hunters that would be more likely to see wolves because of the seal so I decided to drag it into the forest and hoist it into a tree so that I could put a few camera traps nearby. I would be gone for a few days so at the time it seemed a simple thing to do. The dilemma - and yes opportunity - is that when I returned to the camera traps there were wolves in the area and I spent some time to get images of them. A few of the shots were good enough to publish and one of them ended up on one of my books. Should I have published this image? Or should I have deleted it because of the circumstance. I think April is absolutely right that no image should see the light of day if the intent was simply to bait an animal to take a picture. However, in this case the picture was secondary to the information that we were getting about the wolf population on the island without being invasive. Does research trump photo ethics? On hindsight and careful consideration, this image should have been deleted because of the circumstances that it was taken or at least it should have been fully described for how it was taken. I can say that this is the only image that I have ever taken in over 30 years of photography and film work that could be described in the “baited” category other than throwing tuna in the water to take pictures of sharks. This is a good discussion to be having because so many of the images we see now of wildlife are of animals being followed and photographed by telemetry, on the roadside eating carrion, or in some kind of artificial situation. - @iantmcallister on Instagram

Quick PSA: I love riding my bike learning new skills, riding challenging terrain with some flow and maybe some style. I also love helping othersup their skill game in a safe progressive manner. In order to accomplish that we need to have challenging terrain out there. - In the past couple weeks Ive seen many decade old small obstacles being tossed to the side. Many have ride arounds and are manageable by novice to intermediate riders. Im 99.9% sure it isnt MNR or CFFA. Im more willing to bet its new users and not understanding these are part of the trail and if youre unable to ride it. THATS OK!
