I lost my amazing, charismatic father today. Larry Harris was the Original #Girldad. He taught me and @mharris510 to be strong, passionate, honest, generous, hard working, and to love and laugh with an open heart through his example. The family he built with @suzbharris meant everything to him including the two men who became his sons - @jayreilly and Steven Kirstein. He adored his grandchildren @zkirstein12 @kykir #Richard and #Ellis. To say he was proud of us and our accomplishments doesnāt even begin to express his absolute joy at watching his children and grandchildren as we made our way in the world. I was 8. He would take the morning off work and weād go to watch test cricket at Wankhede. We used to enter from Marine Drive near Zaver Mahal. Park the car across the road and queue up to get into the stadium. The rule was simple : I had to always hold his index finger during the walk in. It used to be crowded but never suffocating. He had prepared my lunch box, water bottle and given me a cap for when the sun hit the west stand in the evening. My steps would quicken when Iād hear a roar from the crowds inside. The finger would restrain my speed. Up the stairs, into daylight and the thrill, the splendour of cricket bathed in sunshine with 20,000 people watching. It was only when weād reached our seats that I was allowed to release the finger. I can never forget the sense of safety that finger gave me. It was as if once I held it I was cloaked in inter galactic protective armour. Thatās the wonder of being the right kind of father. It makes your son Superman. This image was taken 22 years after those test match days. 22 years after a boy had experienced boundless love and kindness. Thank you, Baba. Today hasnt been an easy day... Appa, had you been around youd have turned 90 today...but some things arent meant to be! Youve given me some beautiful gifts...thoughts and memories... You always embodied brilliance whether it was the way you articulated things or the delicious food you made... nobody on this planet can come close to making rava dosai or avial (28 vegetables in it!!) or the vegetable and cheese sandwich toast the way you used to...you used to infuse it with special ingredients...tons of love and affection! Ive definitely picked up the passion for cooking from you! You had magic in your fingers whether it was making furniture or fixing things around the house! I can feel your presence in so many things around the house everyday! You understood music and dance like no else could! You were a true connoisseur of the performing arts! And...your driving skills were par excellence! Ive heard stories of what a legendary tennis player you were! You were a great teacher: when I struggled with chemistry equations, youd simplify them for me, when business management went above my head, you created guides for me and made it feel like a piece of cake! Generosity was thy 2nd name...whether it was gifting or helping others! You would always go all out to make guests feel at home and you loved feeding people!Ā Even though you were a self proclaimed atheist, I feel that you were more far more spiritual than all those people who pray or peform rituals but lack emotions or do jack shit to help others!Ā You were honest to a fault! I learnt this from you -Ā your liking or disliking someone should not stop you from helping them! You were very expressive....if you were happy, you would smile from ear to ear... people say Ive inherited your smile...thank you Appa! Back in July, I chose to go home to Ohio for a week and saw much of my family, including my Grandpa. I had no idea that was the last time I would see him. You left too soon, Grandpa. You were a role model for me and so many others. And you always told me that in life āitās not what you know, but who you know.ā You were a social butterfly and I was always impressed by how easily you could strike up a conversation and make friends with anyone. I will always remember our trips to get ice cream, going to the zoo, the museum. You came to all my plays and film screenings. You were so supportive. And when we were little and misbehaved, you would joke and say you would āsend us to the moon.ā Your legacy and lessons will live on through your kids, your grandkids, and beyond. Im gonna miss my Grandpa Junius Leo Bennion. Gratefully he died of natural causes surrounded by his wife and all 9 of his children. He was a giant goofy cowboy with a PHD that shot rockets into the stratosphere. He was one of the softest and most tender men I have ever known with some of the corniest jokes and who knew who he was and what he stood for. He was always making sure you had a handful of Peanut M&Ms or a bowl of ice cream while you laughed with him. He was a poet and a songwriter who always tried to do what was right and loved folks as they came. I am so grateful to carry his name and for all the ways he still lives on in me. Still on a self care tip and still sick, but Happy Fatherās Day to my Dad, Samuel Asibi Agolley. Some of you have read my short story āSamā in the anthology, Growing Up African in Australia. In it I talk about discovering about the life of my Dad posthumously. And in my teens I found photos of him for the first time. I finally got to see him, this Black man, his exuberance, his joy, his life in Ghana, his family, his friends, his travels, his style and him in love with Mum. And in all those photos thereās just one photo of the two of us before he passed away. The sole photo of the two of us was water damaged... distorted. It felt symbolic of the incompleteness, strangely haunting, but I still cherished it. At my low point some weeks ago my girlfriend gave me the photo. She had the image restored by two artists overseas. One of the artists worked on the image at night, in stolen hours and from hearing the story of the photo from my partner, refused payment. I was so taken by this gesture and the image. Taken because there we are. Together. Finally in one frame. I chose to not post it here (for obvious reasons) but itās now on my desktop and in the home. My Granny and Granda - Mary and John Judge - on OāConnell St. some time in the late forties. They lived all their adult lives in the Greek St. flats. My Granda worked in Guinnesses and the fish market while my Granny worked selling fruit on Thomas St. on the same patch that her mother and grandmother sold on. When her grandmother - my great great grandmother - started out they grew the produce that they sold in the Phoenix park. Iām thinking a lot today about matrilineal lines and how women kept everything together while men struggled to evolve past a very basic stage. My Granda was in St. Josephās Industrial school in Artane which was infamous for its abuse of young boys and undoubtedly carried a lot of trauma from his time there. I worshipped my dad. He was handsome and funny. He loved movies and thrift stores and taking things apart and putting them back together. He loved to take us shopping for new clothes. He also struggled with addiction and had a hair trigger temper that didnāt have an off switch. His entire life he battled those demons, a battle he lost when I was 22. A month before he died, we went to Texas to say goodbye. One of the last things he said was āI shouldāve been a better dad.ā I wasnāt expecting it, but I am grateful he recognized the hurt and pain he caused. You were always there with Nanna for every one of our birthdays, special school assemblies, last minute pick ups from the train station, family picnics, netball games and any special moments in my life, showing your support and letting us know how proud you were of us. I hope I can continue to make you proud, as I have always been of you all these years. We will remember him for his love of the golf course (and taking us to the driving range and always being so encouraging even if we were terrible), always a cup of tea in hand, Juicy Fruit chewy in his pocket, the most accurate seagull impression, making cakes, fly fishing, playing board games, doing crosswords and his favourite Hungry Jacks as a take away treat. Iām glad I got to spend these past few months back at home with you, that Alex got to meet you and that you got along so well. It warmed my heart when I would find you two chatting all things sport and adventure. So glad I got to hold your hand one last time, like you always did mine. He taught me determination, confidence and the desire to win above all else. Being a massive racing fan himself, when I sought to start a racing team, he stood in my corner the whole way. September is a very special month, not only is it #ChildhoodCancerAwareness month, but itās also #LeukemiaAwareness month. As some of you may know, my daughter-in-love, Maya was diagnosed with Leukemia almost 3 years ago. Throughout her entire treatment, my son Jelani never left her side, sleeping in a hospital chair next to her for 5 months. Their story truly shows the meaning of unconditional love and fearless perseverance.Ā I felt helpless watching them go through this, and when I asked what I could do to support them, Jelani said to me, āPlease Mom, just bring some good food for Thanksgiving.ā And if you know me, you know thatās right up my alley! The family and I brought over a ginormous Thanksgiving spread...enough to feed the doctors, nurses, and all the hospital staff. While I was there that day, I braided her hair into 2 tight braids, knowing theyād stay there until she was ready to cut off her hair. My dad is CANCER FREE! Weāre in the middle of a pandemic that disproportionately kills black people. Itās a bittersweet week for me this week. My beautiful boy turns 20 and leaves for university. To say Iām proud of him is an understatement. After #Covid19 ruined his chance to make his film he made a film about not being able to make a film and smashed his uni entry interview with that instead. Heās talented, yes, but heās also driven, committed and heās my boy so heās bloody minded too. Iāll be taking him to the next chapter in his life on Saturday. Thatās the sweet bit. The bitter bit is that it wasnāt easy with his mum and we are only where we are because we both, Max & I, worked at it. He hasnāt lived with me since he was small and I feel like Iāve missed so much time with him. It our anniversary! I couldnāt have imagined that a chance conversation about food ( bbq)would lead to an actual date, that led to me marrying Albert Kelly Armstead, AKA Guss. Some of you have heard our testimony. We met, fell in love and moved in. A next door neighbor invited us to church(Bethel COGIC). That day we committed our lives to the Lord. A few months later Guss and I decided that we would get married. The vows we made that day have surely been tested. We made a promise to love one another whether we were ā rich or poorā. We experienced many lean years together. Early in our marriage, there were occasions where we had to get food from a churches food pantry, in order to feed our babies.The lines in our vows that promised weād stay together in ā sickness and in healthā and for ābetter or worse,ā have been proven.We have stood by one another, in some stellar moments,as well as some not so good moments. Our 33 years of marriage is a testament to the Power of God. In anticipation of today, over the last few weeks I have been considering the value of celebrating the anniversary of death in the same we we celebrate birth or the origins of love. I was feeling fairly against the notion, however this morning I considered what my father would have said if I had brought this question to him while he was alive. Thereās no question he would have immediately referenced a dozen or so ancient cultures who believed that death was the most important aspect of life and one to be deeply revered and respected. He would have said, āwhy do you think I spent decades translating the Egyptian book of the dead if there wasnāt something to be celebratedā and that would have spiraled him into a tirade about ceremony and practice that would go on and on until I finally stopped him because at this point heās talking about the different kinds of snakes that lives in ancient Sumer. And if that wasnāt enough for me he would have also stated, āif death isnāt important, why is jean Claude van damme, the greatest actor of all time in so many movies with the word death in the title?ā You got me there pops, so celebrate we shall. My heart goes out to anyone who has lost someone and I stand firm in belief that we must celebrate that loss and the pain it brings. When I think about Pop, I remember the way he could captivate a room with a story. You are no different. Always good for more than a few laughs, the biggest hug and help with absolutely anything. You have made me realise the value of time and supported me through the growth of my businesses. A business that has resulted in more time with my family than I could have ever wished for. Itās my nephew Lincolnās birthday today! While you may not know Lincoln, all I can say is that this special man has been a lifeline for me. Iāve been FaceTiming him and my sister Jacqueline multiple times per week since heās been born. During the good times and the āopportunitiesā to adopt a better outlook on things, Lincoln has ALWAYS made me smile because he is a beautiful soul and a wonderful little man!! Me and my grandpa, Emmet. He was the direct descendant of enslaved Africans, a civil-rights activist and someone who intimately experienced systemic racism as a constant force in his life. His sons (my dad and uncles) grew up in San Fransisco and carried on the efforts of dismantling racism as they saw it penetrate their own lives on a daily basis. They are my experts in racism and the eyes through which my family views America today. I may not know what itās like to live in a black body but I will always look to those that do, because my love encompasses them. I was lucky enough to be born into a diversity of voices, but you can also benefit from richly mixed influences simply by extending your love. All you have to do is choose to love them first, then ask what itās like. Then listen. If you donāt have experts on what it is to live in a black body. Find one. Follow one. Read one. Love one. Thereās no excuse anymore to have all your information being filtered through white voices. Itās literally the lowest hanging fruit I can beg you to grasp: let your love be bigger than your ignorance. Stop letting smug white guys on youtube tell you racism isnāt an intentionally created system designed to loot the bodies of black people. Love them.
