#jonsstudiogear #3 From my first synth & my first vintage analogue synth, to my favourite synth of all... the mighty Oberheim Four Voice (AKA Oberheim FVS1 or Oberheim Polyphonic). As mentioned previously, my initial awareness of analogue synths arose in my teens from the music of one of my musical heroes, @herbiehancock. The epic photo on the back cover of Sunlight (1978) is the primary inspiration for how my synth collection has evolved. The Oberheim was always going to be central to that. After Hancock’s albums Head Hunters & Thrust credited only ARP synths, Man-Child (1975) was the first album where the ‘Oberheim Polyphonic’ appeared (from the first year it was produced). Looking at the Sunlight picture (shown as the last photo here) the Oberheim seemed like a mysterious beast, with its dense mass of black knobs on a cream panel. It’s actually a surprisingly simple, even relatively primitive, synth. But it just makes the most incredibly rich, individual sounds. For many synth fans their desert island instrument would be the Yamaha CS80 - perhaps because of Blade Runner - but for me it will always be the Oberheim, despite it being a much less sophisticated synth. This might be a controversial opinion but I believe you can make other synths sound like a CS80 but nothing else sounds quite like an SEM-based Oberheim. The Four Voice was the first polyphonic synth - it’s made up of four identical ‘SEM’ synths - hence the mass of knobs, while each one is simple to operate. The filter structure really sets it apart from other synths in terms of tone, from weighty bass to fizzy highs. #exmachina (by Barrow/Salisbury) is a good example of a modern film score making good use of the Oberheim sound. They’re very rare and my one has good pedigree - one of the earliest, with a low serial number in the 200s, and was previously used on albums by #massiveattack and #depechemode. My contribution to its ‘album’ credits was playing it on the track ‘Smoke’ from @traceythorn’s 2018 album Record. The producer of that album, #ewanpearson was actually the first person to lend me a single SEM unit before I was able to get hold of a full Four Voice in 2016. #oberheim #fvs1 - @jonopstad on Instagram

Die kleinsten Boxen, welche auf den Bildern zu sehen sind, haben Abmessung von 50x50x68 mm (LxBxH) und legen damit die kleinste Rastereinheit 1x1 fest. Folgen werden noch größere Boxen mit 1x2, 1x3, 1x4, 2x2 und 2x3 Rastereinheiten für etwas größere Teile. Bei der Beschriftung habe ich mich ein klein von @zeropage.io inspirieren lassen. I used some M3 standoffs to assist with the PCB staying in place. It is currently a plate less design. THE PILL AS A TREMOLO 2 ...or actually an envelope follower! With a “normal” trigger gain setting (3rd knob), one bass note fed into the trigger input of The Pill produces one trigger. When trigger gain is set “too” low, The Pill is fast enough to detect the low frequency waves of a low bass note. 💸 Know your worth • ••• 🤷🏽 Im not a full-time freelancer, I also dont actively look for freelance work. However if work finds me, I usually take it. ••• 💀 Before my current job, I tried my hand at freelancer.com and it was terrible. Like @developerdylan said in his tips, youll ended up competing again people who drive their prices into the floor. ••• 💲 I managed to get three projects on that site, one was quite a lot of frontend work for roughly £15 so that I could add to my portfolio and it turned out to be a middle man that charged the actual customer a lot more. The second project was ok, around £125 for a couple hours frontend and the last project which was a couple of days work for about £10 got disputed and I never received even that small amount of money. ••• 🔑 I didnt do those jobs for the money, they were to test myself in a professional capacity. But even then, I should have known my worth. ••• 🤷🏽 Yesterday I quoted someone a price and timeline for a big front end project, they came back with a lower price and a shorter time frame. ••• ••• 😳 I declined. ••• ••• 😎 Dont drive yourself in to the ground for a little more cash.
