We joyfully announce the debut of Phoenix daughter of Holly. This photo was taken @clelandwildlifepark by @ashhunter1 Ashleigh (Ash) was one of the Cleland triage team that helped us in the dark days of January. Holly was rescued (and named) by Ash and the team and only much later they discovered that Holly was carrying a fire baby. Last month when I visited Cleland I thought it appropriate to name her Phoenix. There are many fire babies at HBWS (mostly kangaroo and wallaby but also brush tail possum and koala).Keeping with longstanding tradition very few will be named. I hope to post photos of Phoenixs HBWS bushfire baby cousins in the near future. I have seen them but just cant get a good shot yet. As the weather warms and they spend more time out of the pouch my chances will get better. Like Phoenix, HBWS is slowly rising from the ashes and we grow more confident that the best is yet to come. I would like to express our gratitude to all those who have rallied around us from all over the world. The name Sapphire was carefully and unanimously selected by our keepers because it represents her importance to koalas and the zoo. Sapphires are precious gemstones and we consider our koalas to be particularly precious, especially given the threat to their population 💎🐨💎. Sapphire joins 11-month-old Jasper and 12-month-old Ilani as the last of our koala joeys for 2020. She will spend the next four months cuddling up to mum Scarlet before finding her independence and roaming around freely on her own. It is the perfect symbol to celebrate wild koalas: gum leaves are 100% natural and critical to koala survival, and most Australians can get one, even in isolation. On the 26th Aug 2020, 4 koalas that were rescued by volunteers during the devastating fires of Jan 2020 had their final vet checks and were released after an extended stay in care. This is Jess, and when she was found she was in such poor condition there were doubts around her ultimate survival. She also had a joey with her (Amelia). She not only survived but she had a surprise for vets, a tiny Joey in her pouch, probably conceived days before the fires hit. Because there’s no such thing as too much #quokka spam! Interesting to see more and more people pushing the boundaries and invading the space of these little guys. *You’re not meant to touch or feed quokkas, it’s a pretty simple rule to follow*. They’re wild animals. Yes, they’re incredibly friendly and not scared of people, but that doesn’t mean you should take the piss and break the rules. Two incidents drove me bonkers on this trip to @rottnestislandwa. 1️⃣ A group of 6 or 7 drunk ladies staying next to us had 3 quokkas on their balcony, table and INSIDE their glamping tent. Touching them, feeding them, squealing and having a wow of a time for half an hour. Apparently a quokka ate a white tablet off their floor. Wtaf? One of them urinated in their tent, too (ha!). That’ll serve them right. Damn straight I called the ranger on them because that’s NOT ok 🙅🏻♂️ Hopefully they walked away having been educated what the correct behaviour looks like 💡2️⃣ This morning I watched a kid chase a quokka for about a minute, patting it and pulling its tail. The quokka scratched him, while next to our table. Ha! Then he complained to his Mum, who was previously nowhere to be seen. I loudly pointed out the facts to her: that her unsupervised son (about 5?) was chasing the quokka, pulling its tail and trying to feed it. It was not the quokka’s fault. Purpose of this post is: don’t be a tool and keep your hands to yourselves to conserve our local wildlife heroes. Take that rule anywhere in the world. Also, call the rangers and report behaviour that will harm our beloved furry pals and potentially threaten their future.
