Esse espaço sem fim é a biblioteca da Tabakalera, espaço cultural localizado em San Sebastian, País Basco. É uma biblioteca com caráter um pouco incomum, sem paredes, sem distinção de alas - por exemplo a área infantil não fica separada dos adultos - a locação não é apenas de livros mas também de equipamentos fotográficos, computadores, instrumentos musicais, pequenas estações de fab-lab espalhadas pelo espaço, um estúdio de chroma-key, laboratórios para desenvolvimento e programação de jogos e claro, uma sessão de auto edição, onde encontrei meu próprio livro publicado pela @vibrant.editora em 2015. Quem nos recebeu foi a querida Eneka que esteve na terceira edição da Plana. Ela trabalha na programação da biblioteca e as oficinas, com uma equipe que não estava lá. Ela me contou que estão de greve a dois meses, pedindo melhores salários e consequentemente a biblioteca está fechada ao público. The last 30 days have been humbling to say the least. It’s never been my style to get too personal on this platform, but I never imagined I’d find myself in this position as a small business owner. Not only have spaces like U. West been mandatorily shut down, but also 1 of our sister companies, @bodegaslc + @_therest, and virtually every small business/wholesale account we have with @honestjohnbittersco. My days have been spent trying to close down, maintain spaces, plan for the future, apply for assistance, and make sure all of the employees were taken care of. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see something you’ve worked so hard to bring to life, sit empty and completely void of movement and progress. I miss the voices and crackling vinyl. I miss the scent of brewing coffee and burning candles. I miss the sounds of shaking cocktails and laughter. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy, and that everyone is doing their part to help this pandemic and chaos pass quickly so that we can all not only get back to work, but also get back to each other and real human connection. We miss you. So much. We miss the smell of coffee from @broadporchcoffeeco, the conversations with customers and other shop owners in @agoradowntownmarkethburg, kids running up and down the aisles, and actually having some sort of schedule every day. I have not been very active on here lately, because I really dont even know what to say. Its hard for me to try to sell products and ask for your money, when I know so many are struggling right now. Im also having a hard time feeling like my business is relevant right now. Bulk bins at our local grocery store are closed, most places arent allowing customers to use their own reusable bags, the use of single use disposable products are at an all time high, and Im feeling a little bit defeated. What can we do during this time and moving forward to make a positive impact? One thing I did the other day was create a dog poop composter in my backyard! Im loving not using plastic bags for dog poop, and I cant believe I didnt do it earlier. An on site group exhibition communicating student proposals in situ at Southampton Row, the former Central Saint Martins Campus in Holborn. ⠀ This was the experimental engine room of William Lethaby and likeminded visionaries who brought arts and crafts together under one roof in the service of a⠀ new paedagogic agenda. This agenda would be echoed at⠀ the Bauhaus and Blackmountain College and still manifests⠀ itself in Ikea catalogues and facade treatments. Today, the⠀ former CSM building is in a state of flux and awaiting the⠀ next use ‘incarnation’. After some delays due to Covid-19, a store specializing in sustainable lifestyle products has officially opened its doors in uptown Saint John. Located at 80 Prince William Street, @shop.juniper wants to help people make ethical consumer choices by carrying sustainably made and sourced products like clothing and skin/hair care, gifts, and small homewares. Owner Katelyn Price had planned to open the store back in the spring, but Covid-19 put things on hold. She says she’s happy to finally be welcoming customers. “It feels really good. Happy 18th Birthday to us! On August 15th 2001 we opened The Providores and Tapa Room, along with friends Anna, Jeremy, Annie, Tarik and Savas. Here we are today having closed our kitchen, bar and front door 2 weeks ago. (We’d have toasted ourselves with champagne flutes but we sold them in one of our two jumble sales.) Eighteen years is a really long time, and looking back we are so proud of the alumni who have passed through the doors, many going on to create wonderful businesses of their own. We’ve had births, deaths, marriages and break-ups. We’ve served thousands and thousands of customers delicious food, fantastic coffees and wonderful wines (in recent years exclusively from NZ). We have loved being part of Marylebone Village and its regeneration. So, a huge thank you to you - our customers and supporters, the friends we’ve made and the staff we’ve employed. We’re extremely excited to announce our latest tapestry commission inspired by the work of Leon Kossoff, one of the most important painters of post-war Britain. This new commission is extremely exciting for many reasons, not only has it kick started our tapestry studio, but it’s also the first time Kossoff’s work is being translated to tapestry. The chosen design comes from a Kossoff painting study of ‘Minerva Protects Pax from Mars’ a work originally by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). Kossoff was captivated by the subject and design of Rubens’ 1630 painting and made multiple studies in charcoal as well as oil painting. The work is a highly charged anti-war composition in which Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, helps to drive away Mars, the god of war. The deep colour palette and assertive brushstrokes in this work pose a new challenge for our weavers, which will allow them to highlight their own expressive skill with both texture and colour on a large scale. Physicists Quiet the Quantum Whisper to Improve Gravitational Wave Detector Sensitivity Gravitational wave detectors have opened a new window to the universe by measuring the ripples in spacetime produced by colliding black holes and neutron stars, but they are ultimately limited by quantum fluctuations induced by light reflecting off of mirrors. LSU Ph.D. physics alumnus Jonathan Cripe, postdoctorsl fellow, NIST, and his team of LSU researchers have conducted a new experiment with scientists from Caltech and Thorlabs to explore a way to cancel this quantum backaction and improve detector sensitivity. In a new paper in Physical Review X, the investigators present a method for removing quantum backaction in a simplified system using a mirror the size of a human hair and show the motion of the mirror is reduced in agreement with theoretical predictions. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation. Louisiana State University Ph.D. physics alumnus Jonathan Cripe has conducted a new experiment with scientists from Caltech and Thorlabs to explore a way to improve gravitational wave detectors’ sensitivity. Credit: LSU Despite using 40-kilogram mirrors for detecting passing gravitational waves, quantum fluctuations of light disturb the position of the mirrors when the light is reflected. As gravitational wave detectors continue to grow more sensitive with incremental upgrades, this quantum backaction will become a fundamental limit to the detectors’ sensitivity, hampering their ability to extract astrophysical information from gravitational waves. “We present an experimental testbed for studying and eliminating quantum backaction,” Cripe said. “We perform two measurements of the position of a macroscopic object whose motion is dominated by quantum backaction and show that by making a simple change in the measurement scheme, we can remove the quantum effects from the displacement measurement. With the majority of my commercial work being put on hold with COVID, we have been based in the hills of the Tweed Valley working away on a book that curates a journey through my photographic archive. Compiling images shot over the past 10 years from personal documentary projects shot on the road around Australia, street photographs in Europe and travel projects made while working in Mexico for three years. It has been a full time archive rummage! Printing proof images to break the story out of the chronological order (and the screen) to sort the work into parts that share similar themes. Donald Judd wrote three essays in the 1980s with the title ‘Art and Architecture’: a lecture at Yale University School of Art in 1983; a lecture at the Denver Art Museum in 1984; and an essay in 1987, published in Donald Judd: Architektur in 1989. ⠀ While Judd maintained that art and architecture were distinct practices with specific concerns that were not interchangeable, he understood how the two impacted each other and were in turn impacted by the society and politics in which they were practiced. Judd reacted against the ways in which post-modern art and architecture falsified history. Throwing the final coil for one of the large pots. The form is thrown in a variety of stages, the foot, the bowl of the cup and then a series of coils finishing with the final and most important one for the rim. I don’t know the total weight as I don’t have big enough scales but estimate I use around 150 kgs in total. The final height is around 110 cm and diameter 90 cm with approx 9 coils per pot.
