â â Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was one of the greatest writers of the Modernist period in England. She was the author of several experimental masterpieces that used stream-of-consciousness to better represent human experience, notably Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, Orlando and The Waves. In 1917, she and her husband established the Hogarth Press, printing books from their house, including Woolfs own works. These often featured illustrations by her sister, Vanessa Bell, on the dust jacket and are now highly collectible. â â See the link in our bio to browse Woolfs books. - @shakespeareandcoparis on Instagram

The wood I walk in on this mild May day, with the young yellow-brown foliage of the oaks between me and the blue sky, the white star-flowers and the blue-eyed speedwell and the ground ivy at my feet - what grove of tropic palms, what strange ferns or splendid broad-petalled blossoms, could ever thrill such deep amd delicate fibres within me as this home-scene? These familiar flowers, these well remembered bird notes, this sky with its fitful brightness, these furrowed and grassy fields, each with a sort of personality given to it by the capricious hedgerows - such things as these are the mother tongue of our imagination, the language that is laden with all the subtle inextricable associations the fleeting hours of our childhood left behind them. Our delight in the sunshine on the deep-bladed grass today might be no more than the faint perception of wearied souls if it were not for the sunshine and the grass in the far-off years which live still in us and transforms our perception into love. We would like to share with you a new online gallery that has been uploaded to our site exhibiting theatre broadsides from the Providence Theatre from the year 1803 - 1815. Link in Bio! The Providence Theatre was built in 1795. It occupied the present-day site of Grace Church (corner of Mathewson and Westminster Streets), and operated until 1832. Weve actually been thinking a lot about the performing arts and the void in our lives created by their absence. Over the course of the next few months we will be presenting various artifacts and footage from our archives that relate to the history of performing arts in RI. Stay tuned for more, you may see some familiar faces in some old settings... #rhodeislandhistory #rhodeisland #performingarts #theater #hamlet #shakespeare #providence #providenceri #ri #rihistory #livetheatre #history - @rhodeislandhistory on Instagram

âDisappointed, almost sadâ, that âa girl of strong personality and promise should want to muddle around with sticky clayâ. These were the apparent feelings of an unidentified painter, when Margaret Butler decided to pursue sculpture over her watercolour painting. Born in Greymouth in 1883, Margaretâs muddling, gained the admiration of Europes foremost sculptors in the 1920s. She exhibited works at the Salon des Tuileries, SociĂ©tĂ© des artistes français, and the SociĂ©tĂ© nationale des beaux-arts. In London, her bust The blind girl, was shown at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1935. Despite this international success, Butlers recognition back home wasnt a fair reflection of her talent. This was perhaps best expressed by art historian Mark Stoker when he noted: ..invisibility dogged Margaret Butler within her lifetime and beyond it. We should make amends and âoutâ this remarkable talent in New Zealand art. Image 1: Margaret Butler working on The Shepherdess [unfinished], 1930, Paris, maker unknown. What was Michelangelos relationship with food?â â The artist saw food as fuel rather than pleasureâas something to sustain him so he could focus on his art-making practice.â â The image above is a market shopping list that Michelangelo drafted for his assistant. Perhaps because the assistant could not read, Michelangelo made sketches of the foods next to the Italian words. â â Michelangelos diet would have included the following: bread, cheese, pasta, olive oil, fish, some meat, and local vegetables and fruits. He dined at the Medicis and popes fine tables, which would have had more extravagant items. Interestingly, Michelangelo was not into butter and sweets; perhaps this is why he lived until nearly 89 and had few health issues!â â Curious? Join an online talk and wine tasting Sunday, October 4 at 2pm PT at the #linkinbio and learn about Michelangelo, his food habits, and Renaissance etiquette with Fred Plotkin, a specialist in Italian gastronomy, opera, and history, and Getty drawings curator Julian Brooks. - @gettymuseum on Instagram
