Oh Michelle .... how I 💜 you girl!⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Guys, I know Ive had this rant before but the message doesnt seem to be getting through to the masses. Ive heard the phrase Oh Shaz ... Im low FODMAP! ALL. THE. BLOODY. TIME. I think its meant to be like hey girl, love the diet, I do it too! NO NO NO NO NO NO!🙅⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ The low FODMAP diet is a SHORT-TERM diagnostic tool ... not a lifelong style of eating (like veganism, gluten free etc). 👇⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Why? The low FODMAP diet is ideally only used for a short period of time (2-8 weeks) to work out whether foods high in these sugars/carbs are impacting on how the gut works. Prolonged low intake of prebiotics can lead to becoming more sensitive to FODMAP containing foods over time and a drop in healthy gut bacteria. 😷⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Many people are too strict with the low FODMAP diet. A number of foods containing FODMAPs are ok in smaller quantities but are often cut out for no reason. For example there may be no need to cut out all fruit! 🍌⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ If you have constipation, removal of some FODMAP groups (e.g. sorbitol) or reducing fibre intake (which is common on this diet) can actually make things worse. If constipation gets worse, then you can have the problem of increased bloating, gas and stomach pain. 💩⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Reduced nutrient intake can often occur particularly if the person has additional food intolerances/allergies or alternative diets (e.g., vegan diet). Care needs to be taken to ensure youre meeting your nutrition goals! 💪⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ 70-75% of individuals with IBS respond well to the low FODMAP diet however many other possible food intolerances exist. When working with a experienced professional , an alternative elimination diet may be advised if symptoms are suggestive of other intolerances. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ MORAL OF THE STORY 👇⁠⠀ ✔ Work with a qualified professional⁠⠀ ✔ Dont just assume you have a FODMAP intolerance because youve got gut issues⁠⠀ ✔ Remember biology is a small part of gut issues .. try to look at your lifestyle /life from a more holistic approach (e.g., how are your stress levels? If you look closely you’ll see two faded white scars on my knees. Almost 10 years ago these scars were angry and red and painful. They were stitched up and ugly to look at. There was a time when I never thought I’d see them fade. They were a constant reminder of the pain I was going through. I had to learn how to walk all over again. With each step I took there was a sense of fear that I would never be the same. And I’m not. I’m stronger. Better for it. Not only are these scars a reminder of what I’ve been through but they’re a reminder of how far I’ve come and how far I have yet to go. That no matter what comes my way, I’ll come out better for it. These scars mark my strength. And while it may not seem like the challenges I’ve faced as of late will ever stop being the red angry scars I started out with, I know they too will fade and be just a memory.
