The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) And how it interacts with CBD 🔬 The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) plays a crucial role in regulating our physiology, mood, and everyday experience. This system in our bodies comprised of receptors that have been said to interact exclusively with cannabinoids like CBD and THC. ⚗️ Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that trigger cannabinoid (and other) receptors. We have (at least) two types of cannabinoid receptors: CB1 which is in the central nervous system (brain and nerves of the spinal cord) CB2 which is in the peripheral nervous system (nerves in your extremities), the digestive system, and specialized cells in the immune system 🧬 Through these receptors, ECS helps to regulate functions like appetite, digestion, inflammation, memory, pain etc. Research has indicated that when CBD bonds with the CB1 or CB2 receptors, it is possible to alter and or improve the capabilities of that receptor by restoring balance within the body and improving the receptors functionality. 🧪 When researching maximum daily dosage of CBD, we found in large doses, it can inhibit the metabolizing properties of P450, temporarily neutralizing the effects of other medicinal products in the body’s system. The melting of chocolate changes the structure of cocoa butter crystal from beta 5, which is a stable crystal that gives a shiny and smooth texture to chocolate, to beta 1 to 6, more unstable crytals that causes white patchy coloration on the chocolate. Fat bloom often results from uncontrollable situations like where shippers and carriers store these chocolates at high temperatures. Though this powdery white surface seems concerning, its completely safe to consume these chocolates. Fat bloom does not pose a risk to your health. And if you find yourself not liking the texture, you can always add these chocolates to your baking recipes or melt them for hot chocolate drinks. Time to dive into our first terpene highlight: Limonene. We discussed terpenes and the relevance of them in a previous post but now it’s time to start diving into specific terpenes. Limonene is one of the most popular terpenes in the natural world. Found in most varieties of cannabis (like previously discussed Myrcene), as well as many citrus fruits like lemons, limes and oranges. There are different forms of limonene: d-limonene and l-limonene. D-limonene is much more common (the one we usually find in cannabis) and the one we refer to in today’s post. This terpene has been shown useful in countless applications, the most impressive uses include; anti-inflammatory, anti-stress and as an antioxidant. Wondering why so many household cleaning products have that lemon-lime scent? Limonene has proven to be highly effective for antiviral and antibacterial. That strong aroma is also great as an insecticide. Studies have shown that this terpene builds up in fatty tissue, likely why it is useful in preventing and treating tumors and other forms of cancer that grow in fatty areas. What cultivars have Limonene? What can we expect from the effect? As stated, Limonene is actually found in almost all cannabis but the concentration varies greatly based on cultivar. Cultivars with a citrus profile like our Lemon Heads or Shineapple will have a much larger concentration. With that, typically the tasty citrus flavor will make you experience a bright and uplifting high. Great for when you don’t want to get locked to your couch. Don’t forget every cultivar has several different terpenes in their genetic makeup and while some can be much more pronounced, the effects given are the result of the combination, not just one.
