One of the questions I get the biggest push back on is do you own a gun? I just want to be 100% clear. I only ask make sure guns are being safely stored. My family, and my husbands, own guns. Ive been shooting. When we pediatricians ask, its not to judge but to keep our patients safe. Did you know that about one third of American children have a gun in their home? And while yours might be unloaded and locked up, not all are. Even a toddler can pull the trigger of an unlocked gun. In 2019 there were 241 unintended shootings by children and over 100 died. The AAP states the safest home is one without a gun. The most effective way to keep kids safe from homicide, suicide and unintentional shootings is to not have a gun... BUT if you have a gun, here are some recommendations to make sure you and your kids stay safe! 🔐All guns should be unloaded and kept locked in a safe, with the ammunition stored in a separate locked safe. Make sure kids dont have access to the combinations or keys. Also make sure there are no unlocked guns in cars. When hunting or at the range make sure the safety is always on when the gun isnt being shot. The gun should be unloaded if put down. 📞Remember that even if you follow all the recommendations, not everyone does. We always advise asking every parent before every playdate if there is a gun in the home and, if so, if its unloaded and locked. Also teach your kids that if they see a gun, they should never touch and should tell you immediately. 🎮 Remind kids that what they see on TV and video games is not real. In real life, kids can get hurt and even die from guns violence. Does your pediatrician ask about guns in the home?
