WARNING: What follows are late night ramblings of an introspective night shifter that had way too much caffeine today. Please feel free to just enjoy some mediocre photos of snowy mountains and keep scrolling. I’ve spent a lot of years dreaming about this winter season. Hoping to develop as a backcountry skier and mountaineer, and having community around those things. Getting hurt was never in the plan. I guess it never is. I really am about as lucky as could be considering what could have been. I’m so thankful for everyone who helped me get back to the car in one piece (you all were champions). Everyone who has given me helpful information and has shared encouragement. Friends who check on me and make me feel included and cared about. A girlfriend who loves me and took care of me so so well. That’s a lot to be stoked about. I’ve been doing well mentally and have mostly been happy with my improvement and mobility so far, but for some reason the “Grant who never really gets hurt” is feeling off tonight. A little sorry for myself. Curious about recovery time, wondering about chance of re injury, worried about lingering pain, missing adventures outside, sad about cancelling planned trips and not getting to be a part of current ones. Bunch of unhelpful and whiny stuff that sticks to your brain like fricken velcro. Hate that. Anyway, I’m mostly just in pain because I walked around the city all day and might have overdone it, and then I felt like being weird by acknowledging some thoughts and letting them go in a way I typically do not. Skiing the Grand Teton has been a long time dream. This morning- the Grand once again exists in a dream like state, now called a memory. “Impermanence,” @kitdski would say. However, yesterday it was real. The stomach butterflies of anticipation, leaving the trailhead in the pitch dark midnight quiet, putting on crampons, and swinging an ice tool for the first time in my life. Feeling thankful for the sunrise on the Teepee Glacier, but fearful of its powerful warmth. Taking cover from a stream of hundreds roller balls released from another party above us. Debating the risk of getting knocked about by a snow chunk while repelling versus staying put in warming conditions. Escaping quickly and safely. Finding laughter once again out of harms way. Tripping and falling on my face 5 minutes from trailhead for a solid conservation of greatness. Now when I look up at the Grand, I will first feel gratitude to Kit for helping lead me on this adventure, for our friendship developed this winter, for her endless stories + laughter + insights. Then I will feel capable, knowing my hard work and dedication to training my fitness and skills can allow a dream to come to fruition. Lastly, impermanence will resurface- knowing that I am not defined by my accomplishments or special check marks moments, but rather the daily choices of how to spend our time and how we treat those around us. - @sophiaschwartz on Instagram

На неделю запоздавший пост про восхождение. Это был длинный день, который начался чуть заполночь. Погода выдалась теплой и не сильно ветреной. Стартовали от Гара-Баши, были мысли о ратраке Пастухова, но решили, что надо ногами. В итоге встретили рассвет подходя к Пастухова. До заброшенного ратрака дошёл уже порядком уставшим. А рывок до косой полки дался с трудом. Сама Косая полка могла бы быть лёгкой тропинкой, если бы не высота - шлось небыстро и с остановками каждые минут 10. В итоге до седловины добрались около 11. Там удалось немного отдохнуть и со свежими силами да на легке ломанулись на штурм. Бодрый запал кончился к началу перил и дальше только на морально-волевых. Последние метров 50 шёл перебежками по 5 метров. Вершина - это экстаз :) фотосессия на вершине и очень неторопливо назад. Косая полка вниз на заплетающихся ногах в связке с такими же утомленными. Ратрак до лагеря. Отдых. Так сильно я ещё не уставал, но и красот таких не видал за всю жизнь! - @deadokster on Instagram

Another long day yesterday with @laurentbibollet starting at midnight from the valley floor! We climbed Nantillons glacier via the summer route first, finding wet snow and easy mixt climbing, then on its right side to the bottom of Spencer couloir! Plan A on aiguille de Blaitiere didn’t look that good but the line we partly skied in 2014 with @dcapoz (from 50 m below summit) on Rocher de la Corde looked appealing... Climbing quickly the first 200m, we had to rope on for the last 50m to have a safer progression... Amazing ambiance and unique view from this aesthetic (and not well known) summit... After testing the snowpack with the rope and doing a 10m rappel a bit lower, we enjoyed pretty nice corn snow on technical steep ramps... After such a long long approach to come here we thought we should rather try to do some more turns so we climbed a ramp in the North face of Pointe des Nantillons. Snow was pretty bad with a hard crust (and the line is really short) but we were just happy to be here enjoying the mountains. With the afternoon storm being a bit late, we decided to try a last couloir facing West ending at the pass between Grepon and Bec d’oiseau. Quiet short again but aesthetic with steeps sections, we were lucky to find good corn snow. Then Nantillons glacier was sticky and wet and we found snow patches bringing us back to the main trail and a well deserved lift down... It was probably the first time I was skiing so late in season and it felt like a great way to end the season 😊 No informations about previous descents of those lines! One step at a time, the approach to this particular “summit” is a long one. As most of you know, @sherpascinema has been filming ‘La Liste - Everything Or Nothing’ with @jeremieheitz and @samanthamatten for the last two winters. The film was set to release this fall, but #Covid19 has forced them to postpone production for a year. The good news is that the project’s still going forward, and they have one more year to slot themselves into the high alpine with Sam and Jeremie. And it also gives the lines on Jeremie’s new list another year to come into condition. The journey is the reward! Long 16h round trip from the valley yesterday with @laurentbibollet Amazing ambiance in that wild area of the Argentiere bassin! Plan A was too ambitious... We turned around on plan B because snow was too icy... Plan C revealed to be spicy enough... I had been looking to this line for a long time but never got the opportunity to give it a proper try. We hoped the direct couloir (in purple) would be in better conditions and almost turned around half way up before finding (almost) better conditions on the right hand side that motivated us to go to the summit... Unfortunately we couldn’t break the crust with our edge and had to do a lot of sliding and self belaying! But we had a few good turns on spring snow on the lower part of the line before some tiring cross country snowboarding on the sticky glacier. One of the most inspiring things Ive ever personally witnessed in my life is a handful of my friends being able to make a living exploring in the mountains. I was of part of the generation that saw skiing and snowboarding become an actual job for derelict teenagers and 20 somethings, and I was lucky enough to get adopted into the industry myself at the young age of 15. [ ] My friend Simon Dumont also started in this game at a young age, and as a result, hes one of the brothers that I will always have grown up too fast with. So many good Simon stories over the years and so interesting to really know someone well that is in the public light and perception. Theres so much I could say about Simon, hes a living legend, and watching his battles with my other good friend Tanner Hall over the years, was one of the most epic rivalries in sports. [ ] I was stoked to hear that Simon was starting a podcast, having been quite impressed with his reinvention of himself as a photographer after he hung up his helmet. Hes got access to quite an intriguing group of people, and they trust him and love him as do I. Im sure hes having some interesting conversations with folks, and its definitely worth a listen. Its an honor to be invited to take part in it and reminisce about the good all days. Castor & Pollux MMXIX Cétait il y a presque un an jour pour jour. La nuit drape Castor (4,223 m, sommet à droite) notre objectif du lendemain & Pollux (4,092 m, à gauche) que nous avons fait le jour même après le Breithorn (4164m). Cest la fin du premier jour de notre spaghetti tour, périple qui nous conduira à gravir 12 sommets de 4000+ sur 5j en semi autonomie. Dans cette photo, nous sommes juchés sur un bout de rocher (toujours périlleux à atteindre) dans le petit bivouac Rossi e Volante en train deffectuer le rituel crucial de fin de journée : préparer de leau en fondant la neige. PS: Attention à la latte à lentrée du bivouac, elle est branlante et sérieusement entamée, il est facile de passer à travers ! My grandmother the late, Yvonne Vivette, of the Yakama and Lower-Cowlitz & my grandfather, Robert ‘Red’ Smith, of the Suquamish and Sioux.   I grew up in the Yakima Valley of Washington where my introduction to the outdoors was pouring blood, sweat and tears into running track and cross country in high school. Endurance running continues to be a primary focus and love of mine, though I find love and joy in ski-mountaineering and more recently, alpine and sport climbing. The places these sports have brought me are not coincidentally sacred to Indigenous communities. Once I tuned into the connections all around me, I began interpreting my Indigenous identity through new perspectives. Growing up, I never danced in powwows though most members of my family did. My two sisters, my mother and my three uncles. But never me. This tradition was something I would have to seek out for my own and adapt my own energy toward. A natural evolution of running in the streets and on the track has been to trails and now, mountain or ‘sky’ running. The feeling I get while running at the feet of Takhoma, I imagine is similar to the feeling of dancing in a circle of drums - a sense of belonging. In the past years of making new relations, I understand I am not the only Urban Indian craving this feeling. My elders have taught me to share wisdom that has been gifted to me, and I aspire to share these connections to land and place with other Urban Indians. Weekend before last. We spent 3 nights sleeping on snow and practicing pulling each other out of crevasses and then woke up really really early and walked up to the top of Mt Baker. By far the coolest part was watching the sun rise over the clouds as it cast a shadow of the mountain (which we were climbing) below us. This was my first time summiting a glacier. It was both humbling (crevasses are a little scary, you should not fall in one) and inspiring (we did it!) and now (that Ive had some recovery) Im ready to start planning the next one 😁🏔️⛏️ I didnt take any pics because I was too afraid of dropping my phone and watching it slide down 3000 feet, but Jason let me steal these from him (thanks, Jason) - @jodmurphy on Instagram

When Google Earth has sex with optimism, some freaky shit happens. Deemed a retirement party for a dude whos outdoor rap sheet is a phone book, the journey began with a plane scout last summer, and concluded with said dude, cresting 60, barfing on top of the ridge. The dream was simple-- follow an uninterrupted ridge from the Bugaboos west all the way to the Four Squatters. 50km and 17,000ft of vertical off trail scrambling, glaciation, bergschrunds, shit rock, mud, shale, sidehilling, sand, and finally, a 2500m vertical descent through alder, deadfall, bears. Casual Sunday. 30 hours later with an unplanned 3 hour shiver fest bivy at treeline, we arrived at our car at Duncan Lake, not sure whether beer, or coke, or water was best to wash us clean of the misery. Certainly, most definitely, 100%, not destined to become a classic route, but a memory a few days after the fact, and likely a good memory by the end of the week. It started in the dead of night.. - All summer, @joelevans and I have talked about a mega link up of the remaining 4,000m peaks of the Monte Rosa Massif between Italy and Switzerland. . This week, we went for it! . Starting at the Bivacco Rossi e Volante, we linked up 13 summits, climbing 3900m and traversing 39km all above 4,000m with another night in the Bivacco Giordani. .
