Skiing the Grand Teton has been a long time dream. This morning- the Grand once again exists in a dream like state, now called a memory. “Impermanence,” @kitdski would say. However, yesterday it was real. The stomach butterflies of anticipation, leaving the trailhead in the pitch dark midnight quiet, putting on crampons, and swinging an ice tool for the first time in my life. Feeling thankful for the sunrise on the Teepee Glacier, but fearful of its powerful warmth. Taking cover from a stream of hundreds roller balls released from another party above us. Debating the risk of getting knocked about by a snow chunk while repelling versus staying put in warming conditions. Escaping quickly and safely. Finding laughter once again out of harms way. Tripping and falling on my face 5 minutes from trailhead for a solid conservation of greatness. Now when I look up at the Grand, I will first feel gratitude to Kit for helping lead me on this adventure, for our friendship developed this winter, for her endless stories + laughter + insights. Then I will feel capable, knowing my hard work and dedication to training my fitness and skills can allow a dream to come to fruition. Lastly, impermanence will resurface- knowing that I am not defined by my accomplishments or special check marks moments, but rather the daily choices of how to spend our time and how we treat those around us. - @sophiaschwartz on Instagram

Un anno fa: #AAExpeditionNewZealand 🇳🇿 Sembra impossibile, eppure è già passato un anno da quando con gli sci ai piedi e in compagnia di un meraviglioso gruppo di persone abbiamo attraversato il più selvaggio ecosistema glaciale della #NuovaZelanda. Scorrere queste foto ci fa riassaporare quel mix di emozioni che ci ha accompagnato per 8 lunghi giorni: stanchezza, gioia, incertezza (e fame, immancabilmente 😅). La traversata ci ha fatto capire che questo è lo scialpinismo che amiamo davvero, uno stile che va al di là della performance e che si potrebbe riassumere con lespressione andiamo a vedere cosa cè lassù. Il nostro ultimo progetto di skialp e kayak in #Groenlandia, che si sarebbe dovuto svolgere a Maggio e che è stato annullato a causa della pandemia globale, era nato proprio con lo stesso spirito. Dita incrociate per la prossima primavera, noi non ci tiriamo certo indietro🤞🏼#AdventureAddicted . One step at a time, the approach to this particular “summit” is a long one. As most of you know, we’ve been filming ‘La Liste - Everything Or Nothing’ with @jeremieheitz and @samanthamatten for the last two winters. The film was set to release this fall, but #Covid19 has forced us to postpone production for a year. The good news is that the project’s still going forward, and we have one more year to slot ourselves into the high alpine with Sam and Jérémie. And it also gives the lines on Jeremie’s new list another year to come into condition. ASJ retrospective #2: La Grave, 2010. It’s easy to see La Grave as a kind of Wild West hiding in the French Alps, with its lack of ropes and rules. While it may be the most “free” of any lift access skiing in the world, La Meije casts a kind of deferential shadow of restraint over the town of La Grave that keeps its constituents always on their toes, respectful, or else. With sweaty palms, smoky lungs, and wobbly knees, skiing here is a constant negotiation between either side of the finest of lines. From the Archives: This story by the great alpinist Kei Taniguchi first appeared in Alpinist 52, which was published just before she died from a fall in December 2015 while climbing in Japans Ishikari Mountains. In Being with the Mountain, Taniguchi writes, I dont like rushing to a destination, reaching the base of a peak in the shortest possible time and starting to climb right away. To me, that approach would be like walking into someones house with dirty shoes. Years ago spending my first season in Cham, my go to ski partners were always Scandinavians. They skied hard, partied hard and were always fun to hang out with. But given a chance and paired with the right skills, training, mindset, and supporting teams, we are all capable of shattering expectations. . Meet Zhang Hong (pictured here). Zhang is training to be the first blind person from China to summit Mount Everest in 2021. He reached out to me looking for encouragement after facing skepticism and critics in his home country. . From Zhang: . “In childhood, I was very introverted and lonely. My father and uncle were both blind and we were isolated and ostracized as a family. Then, by chance in 2015, I met the famous mountaineer, Mr. Luo Ze, who had successfully climbed all fourteen 8000 meter peaks in the world. It was he who told me your story of summiting Mount Everest. Since then, I have also strengthened a belief that all blind people are as capable as those that are sighted. I became determined to challenge myself and tap my potential. I have been actively training and, after many hardships and difficulties, I have successfully climbed to the top of the Zhuo La Rikang Snow Mountain (7,050m) and reached the Muztagh Peak (7,546m). I hope that through my summit of Mount Everest next year, [I] will inspire more people and bring them the strength to have a confident and sunny life.” . One of the most inspiring things Ive ever personally witnessed in my life is a handful of my friends being able to make a living exploring in the mountains. I was of part of the generation that saw skiing and snowboarding become an actual job for derelict teenagers and 20 somethings, and I was lucky enough to get adopted into the industry myself at the young age of 15. [ ] My friend Simon Dumont also started in this game at a young age, and as a result, hes one of the brothers that I will always have grown up too fast with. So many good Simon stories over the years and so interesting to really know someone well that is in the public light and perception. Theres so much I could say about Simon, hes a living legend, and watching his battles with my other good friend Tanner Hall over the years, was one of the most epic rivalries in sports. [ ] I was stoked to hear that Simon was starting a podcast, having been quite impressed with his reinvention of himself as a photographer after he hung up his helmet. Hes got access to quite an intriguing group of people, and they trust him and love him as do I. Im sure hes having some interesting conversations with folks, and its definitely worth a listen. #tbt pretty exactly one year ago when I started my advanced mountaineering career (skipped the basic one) and went straight to do the Weisshorn traverse before ever having set foot on any other 4000 m peak in the Alps. Looking back at it now, wouldnt really recommend it. But heck yeah, everything went well and Ive had an epic day on top of the Alps that Ill never forget. A tour that usually people dream of doing for a lifetime and slowly build up their skills and confidence to do. And still so few people attempt and even less successfully complete. Instead, it kinda went like this: My colleague, a mountain guide and very skilled climber, after doing a lot of glacier field work together was like : Hey, I see youre fit in the mountains. Wanna come climb Weisshorn with me? But not the normal route, lets do the traverse over the North Ridge instead. Uhm, Ive never done any serious mountaineering and havent climbed in ages...are you sure thats a good idea? Yes! I am convinced you can do it. Next weekend the weather looks good. Lets go So we went and did it. This crazy long knife edge ridge high above everything else, the perfect mixture of snowy parts and rocks climbing in between. Never seen anything so pristine and beautiful (in fact Id only seen Weisshorn one time before and never even would have dreamed of climbing it one day). Dont know if Ill ever get to do something like that again. Dont know if I ever want to do it again as it certainly pushed me to my limits. Technically it was fine, climbing is never more than in the 4th grade. Easy. Well, at 4000 meters elevation and in full mountaineering equipment instead of those climbing shoes and with at least 1500 meters drop right below by butt its a different feeling. Funny enough, the hardest part was the stamina (which I thought would be my strength - Im not good in technical terrain but can go on forever). Learned the hard way that mountaineering uses a lot more and very different muscles than hiking... especially the down climbing and 3000 meters descent at the end broke me. Couldnt really walk stairs for two weeks afterwards.... But despite all of this Im so happy to have said yes. - @leahikes on Instagram

I am a citizen of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. My Indigenous heritage comes from both of my mother’s parents. My grandmother the late, Yvonne Vivette, of the Yakama and Lower-Cowlitz & my grandfather, Robert ‘Red’ Smith, of the Suquamish and Sioux.   I grew up in the Yakima Valley of Washington where my introduction to the outdoors was pouring blood, sweat and tears into running track and cross country in high school. Endurance running continues to be a primary focus and love of mine, though I find love and joy in ski-mountaineering and more recently, alpine and sport climbing. The places these sports have brought me are not coincidentally sacred to Indigenous communities. Once I tuned into the connections all around me, I began interpreting my Indigenous identity through new perspectives. Growing up, I never danced in powwows though most members of my family did. My two sisters, my mother and my three uncles. But never me. This tradition was something I would have to seek out for my own and adapt my own energy toward. A natural evolution of running in the streets and on the track has been to trails and now, mountain or ‘sky’ running. The feeling I get while running at the feet of Takhoma, I imagine is similar to the feeling of dancing in a circle of drums - a sense of belonging. In the past years of making new relations, I understand I am not the only Urban Indian craving this feeling. My elders have taught me to share wisdom that has been gifted to me, and I aspire to share these connections to land and place with other Urban Indians. Since we are allowed to travel again, I explorer so many diffrent areas that the #alps have to offer. I am just super glad that we finally can play again in the mountains and feel fortunated to be un all these places! Great experience climbing Chardonnet from the valley floor yesterday! Amazing ambiance on the rarely skied Migot spur shared with @yannick_boissenot and @laurentbibollet Unfortunately the strong wind and changing snow quality made the descent a bit spicy, obliging us to down climb part of the lower slope to avoid the skier right exit which looked too icy and exposed under big seracs! I have a couple of wishes for this upcoming winter. First of all, let there be snow early and season ends in june. Second , let the lifts run normally. [ #covid19 ] Touring is good, but liftbased skiing gives me so much! Third , calm low pressures with tons of snow and not too much wind. Four, I hope I can seak in a session #Lofoten with guests and without guest. Five, Note to self and ski hungry norwagians. November will be good in #Romsdal and #Nordmøre. It allways is. Another long day yesterday with @laurentbibollet starting at midnight from the valley floor! We climbed Nantillons glacier via the summer route first, finding wet snow and easy mixt climbing, then on its right side to the bottom of Spencer couloir! Plan A on aiguille de Blaitiere didn’t look that good but the line we partly skied in 2014 with @dcapoz (from 50 m below summit) on Rocher de la Corde looked appealing... Climbing quickly the first 200m, we had to rope on for the last 50m to have a safer progression... Amazing ambiance and unique view from this aesthetic (and not well known) summit... After testing the snowpack with the rope and doing a 10m rappel a bit lower, we enjoyed pretty nice corn snow on technical steep ramps... After such a long long approach to come here we thought we should rather try to do some more turns so we climbed a ramp in the North face of Pointe des Nantillons. Snow was pretty bad with a hard crust (and the line is really short) but we were just happy to be here enjoying the mountains. With the afternoon storm being a bit late, we decided to try a last couloir facing West ending at the pass between Grepon and Bec d’oiseau. Quiet short again but aesthetic with steeps sections, we were lucky to find good corn snow. Then Nantillons glacier was sticky and wet and we found snow patches bringing us back to the main trail and a well deserved lift down... It was probably the first time I was skiing so late in season and it felt like a great way to end the season 😊 No informations about previous descents of those lines! He’s been a total workhorse and always ready to make it happen, often guiding more climbing and skiing days in a season than anyone else on the team.  Throughout his many years of guiding, he had already completed his Ski Guide Certification and Rock Guide Certification. This week he passed his Alpine Guide Exam in the Cascade Mountains to complete the trifecta. Tim’s @ifmgaofficial certification is the highest level of credential attainable by a professional mountain guide, and is an achievement recognized in more than 20 International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations member countries. Here we are sat on the wrong side of the Gervasutti sluff runnel 🤷‍♂️. We skied great spring snow this morning until we had to let other skiers pass before recrossing. Always a pleasure to be there with @ross.hewitt who I’ve skied all my Gervasutti runs with since 2011. One of the world’s most classic steep lines, first skied by the pioneering Saudan in 1968! This line has changed a lot over the years, and the once deadly séracs overhead are now much more benign. However, a lot of rock has become exposed in summer in the line. Weekend before last. We spent 3 nights sleeping on snow and practicing pulling each other out of crevasses and then woke up really really early and walked up to the top of Mt Baker. By far the coolest part was watching the sun rise over the clouds as it cast a shadow of the mountain (which we were climbing) below us. This was my first time summiting a glacier. It was both humbling (crevasses are a little scary, you should not fall in one) and inspiring (we did it!) and now (that Ive had some recovery) Im ready to start planning the next one 😁🏔️⛏️ I didnt take any pics because I was too afraid of dropping my phone and watching it slide down 3000 feet, but Jason let me steal these from him (thanks, Jason) - @jodmurphy on Instagram
