We’re taking extra pleasure in familiar things in these extremely abnormal times. Wonderful fruit and vegetables are here — from our garden and local farms — and we’re regularly changing our menu to feature the best of the season. We’re sourcing as high a percentage of local, organic, or fair-trade as ever in our 13 year history — last month they made up 94% of our purchases! . But that’s about the only thing that’s normal for us right now. Summer is usually our busiest time, and while we are buying to the highest sourcing standards we’ve ever hit, we’re buying less food than ever before. Our cafe business in July was operating at 27% of last July’s sales. Catering (which in normal times makes up about half our business) was at 7% of last July, and we only hit that by offering home deliveries of baked goods, prepared food, produce, and grocery items. . Running any restaurant, but especially one like ours with values that are expensive to uphold (paying people fairly with benefits, sourcing local and organic at the highest standards possible, not cutting corners), requires near constant adaptation. Since opening in 2007, running Common Roots has been a repeated lesson in how to figure out new ways to do things a little bit more efficiently and constantly reinvent ourselves. That has been a skill and a mindset that has served us well in the pandemic, since every week seems to bring another pivot. Another skill I have learned running this restaurant is how to face working really hard and still losing money. Many years the numbers simply don’t work out. The difference this year is that we know that there is no chance to make it up — no amount of hustle and adaptation can fix the problem and there are no busy catering stretches to make up the difference. . We know that we’re among the lucky ones — we’re still here, still plowing forward. We’re just moving forward and celebrating that each week we get through is one week closer to a post-pandemic world. It’s National Pawpaw day! And we don’t mean your grandpa. The pawpaw is a popular native fruit tree that’s sometimes hard to find at garden centers. Flowers are maroon and appear in mid-March in south Louisiana. Fruit ripens in August and early September. They are tannish-yellow with white, creamy flesh that is custardy in texture. Pawpaws need some shade to get established but can tolerate full sun after the first couple of years. Pawpaws prefer a well-drained soil. There was a big guava tree 🌳 in our old house (Dadi ka ghar), we used to call it bua wala ghar. 🏡 Every year in summer vacations me and my cousins always used to have a lot of fun. 👭👫👬 We used to climb on our big guava tree, pluck fruits and play day and night. Our neighbor also had a guava tree and they had more tastier guavas (red one). We used to climb on our roof to pluck their guavas (by hiding ourselves)😇. Our neighbor aunty used to scold us a lot when she saw us plucking guavas. 🤫 Same me and my friends (5th standard wali 🙃) used to stay at my dadis house while returning from our tuition classes to pluck those super delicious guavas. Me and my childhood friends also had so much fun in our childhood days. Even I had a lot of fun with my old neighbor friends, we used to pluck guava trees leaves to use it like money in our games and plays🤪. So beautiful memories of childhood, even this is not enough talking just about guava, just a simple thing but have a lot of cute memories. 🥰 Nowadays we can buy such things and eat but we cant make those same memories again.
