A young student of Zen was going to the market to buy vegetables for the monastery where he was studying. Chakrasamvara is one of the most important male deities in Tibetan Buddhism. The Chakrasamvara Tantra is the principal tantra of the Anuttarayoga or ‘Unexcelled Yoga’ classification of the Vajrayana Buddhist tradition, providing the greatest detail of all tantras on how to experience the four stages of bliss within the central channel of the body. Visualizations of Chakrasamvara can ultimately enable one to reach the most subtle level of mental activity and, eventually, enlightenment. There are three main traditions of practice as devised by three mahasiddhas. On the back of this thangka, a golden inscription praises a text called Lotus Skull Rosary. This is the precise text from which the Guru Drakpocheys (center) visualization derives, and its composition is attributed to Padmasambhava (top left). But the Lotus Skull Rosary did not appear in public until the fifteenth century, when it was discovered by the lama at the top right of the thangka, Pema Lingpa. The kingdom of Sikkim was established in 1642 when the three lamas met at Yuksom and consecrated Phuntsog Namgyal(pic1), a descendant of Khyebumsa, as the first chogyal. The lamas are popularly known as Naljor Che Sum: °Gyalwa Lhatsun Chenpo ~ (pic2) °Kathog Kuntu Zangpo ~ (pic3) °Gyalwa Ngadag Sempa Chenpo ~ (pic4) The three lamas met according to Gururinpoches prophecy which said that three learned men would come from the North, West and South and from the east would come the King. Chogyal Phuntsog Namgyals reign saw the conversion of natives into Tibetan buddhism and in expansion of the kingdom. - My favourite ornament...it is so delicate. Its mass produced tourist stuff that I paid peanuts for from a charity shop...but that doesnt mean I wouldnt try and rescue it in a fire. This makes me happy whenever I look at it.
