One of the most influential musicians and visual artist that I highly respect is Kim Gordon. Shes someone that always defied the line of femininity vs. masculinity. Being seen as the girl in the band instead of as a true artist is an issue women (especially artists/musicians) are dealt with on a daily. We are not seen for our talents, instead just as our gender because how could a girl possibly be doing this? Whats really relatable about Kim to me is her acceptance of hypersensitivity, turned fearless. We are only human. We have experiences that create baggage. We have emotions and fears and thats OKAY. We shouldnt feel guilty about that. In her book she states, “In general … women aren’t allowed to be kick-ass … At the end of the day, women are expected to hold up the world, not annihilate it.” On stage, Kim annihilates the world thats been constructed for us women.
