It’s time for another #ThrowbackThursday. ⏳ Today we are reminded of the joys of a simple chat with friends and family…without masks or 6 feet between. This photo is of Queen Wilhelmina and Princess Juliana of the Netherlands entertaining Madame Chiang Kai-Shek, the First Lady of the Republic of China, in 1943. 🌷 --------------------------------------------- C’est l’heure d’un autre #JeudiNostalgie. ⏳ Aujourd’hui, nous nous rappelons les joies d’une simple conversation avec nos amis et notre famille… sans masque ou à deux mètres de distance. I’ve been writing and re-writing and re-writing. I’m tired. For now, sharing an excerpt from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter From a Birmingham Jail”- “First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action”; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a “more convenient season.” Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.” - @amandamescudi on Instagram

Kata-momi, a word for shoulder massage in Japanese. As a small kid, I used to give my grandparents a shoulder massage all the time. They loved it so much that made me believe that I was really good at it. To be honest, my hands were too small and weak, their stiff and tired shoulders probably didn’t even feel much of a massage. Known as Respect of the Aged Day, today “Keiro-no-Hi” is a public holiday in Japan that celebrates annually to express respect for the elders in the family or the community, and to recognize and thank them for their contributions to society and last but not least, celebrate their long lives. Today, I revisit the old memories with my grandparents in my head instead of going to their graves in Japan. What did we talk about during our Kata-momi? What was on a TV screen? What were we eating that day? ..... I ask. A wrinkly shirt on my grandfather’s back, grandma’s chubby arms, the warm laughs we shared every day. Small moments I can recall have many missing pieces, going around like a broken record playing the same part over and over again. Now my hands are bigger and stronger, ready for a proper shoulder massage, I can only wish I could sit together with them again and tell my grandparents how grateful I am for their valuable life experiences. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine announced Wednesday the agency’s headquarters building in Washington, D.C., will be named after Mary W. Jackson, the first African American female engineer at NASA. Jackson, a mathematician and aerospace engineer, went on to lead programs influencing the hiring and promotion of women in NASAs science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers. On Sept. 27, 1962, Silent Spring by Rachel Carson was published. “. . . She identified human hubris and financial self-interest as the crux of the problem and asked if we could master ourselves and our appetites to live as though we humans are an equal part of the earth’s systems and not the master of them.” 🌱🌱🌱 Posted @withregram • @zinneducationproject On Sept. 27, 1962, Silent Spring by Rachel Carson was published. . . The book exposes the devastating impact of widespread and uncontrolled pesticide use on the environment. As explained on the Rachel Carson website, . . “Serialized in three parts in The New Yorker, Silent Spring was published in August and became an instant best-seller and the most talked about book in decades. Utilizing her many sources in federal science and in private research, Carson spent over six years documenting her analysis that humans were misusing powerful, persistent, chemical pesticides before knowing the full extent of their potential harm to the whole biota. . . . . . She identified human hubris and financial self-interest as the crux of the problem and asked if we could master ourselves and our appetites to live as though we humans are an equal part of the earth’s systems and not the master of them.” . . In response, Carson was vilified by the chemical industry and their allies in the mainstream press and government. She was called a Communist, disloyal, unscientific, and hysterical. . . More than six decades later, the need to teach about threats to the environment is even greater and the attacks on truth telling continue. . . The American Experience PBS documentary on Rachel Carson is streaming in full online. . . [Image description: Black and white photo of Rachel Carson seated at her desk with a typewriter. PERSPECTIVE for our heat wave. Life before air conditioning 😂 .... On hot nights, the porch was a cooler place to sleep. ... People had other personal methods for keeping cool, such as hanging wet laundry in doorways, sleeping in refrigerated sheets, and keeping ones underwear in the freezer. Years ago when air conditioning wasnt universal, we were sometimes miserably hot. - @mattburn_owo on Instagram

Happy would be 100th birthday to my grandmother Mary Bradbeer. She passed away 5 years ago, aged 95. She lived independently until the final weeks and was a true matriarch. I suspect she regretted moving to Australia from Scotland in 1955 but I’m certain that the four sons, 12 grandchildren and 10,000,000 great grandchildren are thankful for the sacrifice and the love you brought to so many of our lives. I’ve never known anyone to hoard more jars of Rose’s Lime Marmalade and therein lies the kernel of eccentricity that manifests itself in all her offspring. I will be making (vego) mince & tatties and reading The Broons in your memory. ❤️ - @bradbeer.on.bass on Instagram

#ThrowbackThursday! Did somebody say free ice water? 🧊 Our Historic Davenport Hotel opened on September 1st, 1914, in which we were the first hotel with many featured amenities including air conditioning, a central vacuum system, housekeeping carts, accordion ballroom doors and more. The most notable of them all, though, is that The Davenport was the first hotel in the country to deliver ice water to each guest - for free! - through specially designed faucets in each of the 405 rooms.
