#Repost @gatorboys_chris —— Consume Definitely one of the craziest wildlife encounters I’ve photographed, a western tree snake(Imantodes inornatus) consuming a red eye tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas) in Costa Rica. Typically snakes kill their prey first then orient it to swallow it head first, this makes things much easier to get down with the limbs(or spines/horns depending on prey), but this snake must have caught the frog by the back and began swallowing it down still very much alive with the frog trying its best to escape. This was just an insane spectacle to observe, the images so bizarre looking, as if the snake has arms. I of course felt very bad for the frog and wanted to help it, but this was in the wild in nature and the snake has to eat too, and it is best to not interfere with wildlife living out the circle of life. This species of frog has a very mildly toxic skin secretion, and this species of snake has a mild venom, both of which are relatively harmless to humans, but still very interesting to contemplate the toxicity arms race evolving between the two. Photographed at @greentiquewildliferefuge.cr @sicomonoresort in Costa Rica a few years ago, with my Canon 70D and 100mm macro lens. Deep in the Leuser jungle, on evening 2 of our 5 day trek with @lastofthewildplaces, along the river system near camp tucked away in a fallen tree stump I found this little green pit viper. Although he looks like other vipers and has these amazing green colours and looks incredibly striking, he could be important to science. After taking photos and sending it to experts around the world it’s still unclear exactly what species of viper this is. It could be a Trimeresurus sabahi with unknown subspecies or it could be a new species all together. It’s impossible to tell without getting it’s genetics. I find it amazing that we are continually discovering things in space, yet there is still so many mysteries here on earth. I’m hoping that this little viper could be one of those mysteries. Looks like we have another trek to do @lastofthewildplaces? After a long day trekking to arrive at the next camp site I went for a quick dip in the river and decided to look for snakes along the river. In an old tree stump I thought this would be a good place for a snake to hide and then there he was. I raced back to get my camera and was able to get some shots of him. Vipers aren’t fast moving snakes they rely on their camouflage and ambushing skills to catch their prey. They hide or wait out on tree branches in areas where food is more abundant. Conserving that energy to put into its killer strike. They are one of the fast stroking snakes in the world. They love to eat frogs, small lizards, small birds and rodents. Anything they can over power really. You can see the different colour of his tail. Like many viper species they wiggle this to look like a worm and to entice prey to within striking distance. I will post another photo when I find out more info on this snake and if anyone can help in identifying the species please hit me up. Hola, soy una linda serpiente bejuquillo verde. Los biólogos me conocen como Oxybelis fulgidus y es un nombre que me gusta pues la etimología de este significa cabeza de lanza brillante. Y es por eso que nos caracterizamos yo y mis hermanas Oxybelis, pues tenemos cabezas puntiagudas, cuerpos delgados y ojos enormes. Me encanta vivir en las ramas donde me alimento de ranas, aves , ranas y lagartijas. Soy una gran asechadora y embosco a mis presas colgada de las ramas. No muerdo a menos que me molestes, pues mi veneno es muy preciado para mi y no soy agresiva ni letal. - Mexican mole lizards are creatures that live underground. They have no back limbs and two five clawed hands near their heads. They live in California and are only a quarter of an inch wide, slightly smaller than the width of a pencil.
A six year long wait... Cyrtodactylus jeyporensis Jeypore ground gecko Back in 2014 I was reading about species of reptiles that are found in and around Visakhapatnam and what caught my eye was were 4 species that are endemic to Eastern Ghats. One of those species was this little one. C.jeyporensis is an elusive and nocturnal species of ground dwelling lizards thats, so far, seen only in very few moist deciduous forests of Koraput, Odisha and Araku-Paderu valley of Visakhapatnam. This species was rediscovered after 135 years in 2012 by team of researchers studying reptile diversity of that region. This species is seen(probably) on rocks, boulders and tree bases, hunting for insects. I wish I could say more about this species but we know very little about it (just like several others from Eastern Ghats) and its patchy occurence rises more questions. @geckoella & @akshay_khandekar_ are two researchers who have studied this species and also have best pictures of it. I was extremely thrilled when I spotted this species last night. I have searched for this species quite a few times but with my restricted resources and time, I never really searched for it in the right place until last night. @avi_fotography first stumbled upon this last year, and weve been planning to see this again ever since. C.jeyporensis is Critically Endangered mainly because of habitat lossand habitat transformation. However, I also feel that such fascinating lizards are vulnerable to illegal pet trade and poaching. With their vertical pupils and opposable thumbs, Phyllomedusa are easily some of the most distinguishable of all tree frogs. However, it is their peculiar form of locomotion that is perhaps their most striking feature: when seen walking slowly down a branch with their bodies raised, they appear decidedly ‘un-froglike’. Studies into their anatomy reveal that they possess a specialized musculature that not only allows them to move their limbs independently (as opposed to the simultaneous bilateral hopping motions of most other frogs), but also gives them a ‘precision grip’ which enables steady movement over thin branches. This grasping ability is rare among animals and is shared predominantly with higher primates, hence leading to one of their common names: ‘Monkey Frogs’. This blue-tailed Skink also known as a Western Skink (Plestiodon skiltonianus) was spotted at Edgewood Park. This lizard is easy to identify because of its brightly colored blue tail. As beautiful as their tail is, its real purpose is to work as a defense mechanism. Skinks are a type of lizard but when they move quickly, they also wriggle their body in a snake like fashion. This wriggling flashes their bright blue tail around, inviting predators to snatch it. Once a predator grabs hold, the Skink can detach its tail and escape while its predator is left with less of a meal than it expected. Luckily, the Skink has adapted to shut off blood supply to that area and eventually grow another tail! #wildlifewednesday #skink #edgewoodpark - @smcparks on Instagram
