Research and development is an integral part of what growing grains should be about. Regenerative agriculture practices set in an organic system is key to creating a balanced healthy soil, which in turn creates a healthy eco system. This is the rabbit hole that @turloughkeenan and myself have gone down and I’m not sure where it will take us, but it’s both fascinating and damn exciting to see the development from where we started with a few grams of grains to the present biodiversity on the farm. All this work is of course made easier when you have machines as aides to assist in the sowing, harvesting, drying and cleaning of the different crops, of which cereals are just a part. Cover crops are essential in building balance, which is the next step in the system, harvesting and saving seeds from this process. We’re fortunate to have learned so much about farming and machines from an early age, which makes all of this possible plus a good dash of enthusiasm and maybe a sprinkling of determination in there too! After succumbing to a fever of some sort in 1705, Irish woman Margorie McCall was hastily buried to prevent the spread of whatever had done her in. Margorie was buried with a valuable ring, which her husband had been unable to remove due to swelling. This made her an even better target for body snatchers, who could cash in on both the corpse and the ring. The evening after Margorie was buried, before the soil had even settled, the grave-robbers showed up and started digging. Unable to pry the ring off the finger, they decided to cut the finger off. As soon as blood was drawn, Margorie awoke from her coma, sat straight up and screamed. The fate of the grave-robbers remains unknown. One story says the men dropped dead on the spot, while another claims they fled and never returned to their chosen profession. Margorie climbed out of the hole and made her way back to her home. Her husband John, a doctor, was at home with the children when he heard a knock at the door. He told the children, “If your mother were still alive, I’d swear that was her knock.” When he opened the door to find his wife standing there, dressed in her burial clothes, blood dripping from her finger but very much alive, he dropped dead to the floor. He was buried in the plot Margorie had vacated. Margorie went on to re-marry and have several children. When she did finally die, she was returned to Shankill Cemetery in Lurgan, Ireland, where her gravestone still stands. This marker is a bit confusing for me. John O. Martell was killed in 1861 at age 18. I can find zero information on him. Even his FindaGrave entry says he was a civil war soldier (note the Union carved into his stone and the flag) BUT the civil war didn’t start until April of that year, he was killed in February. Travel Tuesday – Miller’s Park Sculptures, Lucas, Kansas Roy and Clara Miller created their park as a rest stop and recreation area along Kansas Highway 18, both for the citizens of Lucas and the public. They welcomed travelers, offered fresh water, eventually built cabins, and added playground equipment and picnic tables. Most importantly, they shared their small sculpture-filled park with visitors. They built miniature buildings for a tiny town and fashioned a rock garden of rocks and shells they gathered on their travels. During the 1920s, it was a Lucas gathering spot. Time passed, and the property was eventually sold in 1969 to settle the estate. The sculptures were moved to Hays, Kansas and became a tourist site known as Frontier Village. Initially a popular attraction, the effort faded and the sculptures were left to languish, but through the generosity and vision of Henry Schwaller IV, Miller’s Park returned to Lucas, Kansas. In 2012 and 2013, Kohler Foundation took on the preservation of Miller’s Park. The foundation was joined by a team of enthusiastic local volunteers, art conservators from Houston and Los Angeles, and preservation technicians to preserve the remaining forty-five sculptures. Miller’s Park now has a permanent location adjacent to the Garden of Eden in Lucas at 317 E. 2nd Street and is open daily.
