Today we celebrate National Loving Day - a day to remember the landmark 1967 Supreme Court Decision of Loving vs. Virginia striking down laws banning interracial marriage in the United States. The perfectly named Mildred and Richard Loving were arrested, convicted and sentenced to prison, just for being a multiracial couple living together as husband and wife. With the help of the ACLU, they appealed their convictions all the way to the US Supreme Court, winning their appeal and paving the way for multiracial couples to marry legally in all 50 states. 53 years later we are still fighting for racial equality and justice. People in Atlanta and all over the world have taken to the streets to raise awareness and demand change. We will continue to support people and organizations like the ACLU and others working to bring equal economic opportunity, equality in healthcare and education, fairness in policing and criminal justice and protection of voting rights for all people of color. Legendary Events stands with our black and brown family in fighting to make these ideals a reality - NOW. We will also continue to do as we have done for 23 years - help ALL couples celebrate love. And we take today to celebrate one very special couple - Mildred and Richard Loving. Happy Loving Day!!! - @tony_conway_legendary_events on Instagram

- Dad passed away nearly 3 years ago - I have no idea what was going on here but this pic always makes me laugh.
My uncle, Dick (Richard Simpson) passed away last week. (He’s technically my great uncle, but there is not much of a meaningful differentiation for me, since I lived with my grandparents my entire life, and he was always around, playing with me, and joking constantly with everyone, watching old movies in the den with Grandpa, and telling me stories; hes my uncle.) He was a Vietnam veteran. When I was really young, he used to sit on the old, wooden red porch swing in the back yard, while Grandma and his wife, Aunt Maona, were making dinner inside, and tell me stories about other very different kinds of meals he’d eaten during the war. I sat on the ground, my legs crossed, listening intently. I could see everything so clearly. He told me about walking along the stone fences of flooded rice fields in Vietnam; balancing his rucksack, and trying to keep his gun dry. He told me how his unit sometimes went for days with no food. One time, they walked until evening and came to a flooded rice paddy, then made their way through it at dusk, balancing atop the labyrinthian stone walls, until they came to a small house, where a local woman was cooking stew in a large pot over a fire in her yard. They asked if they could have some of the stew, and she invited them to stay in her yard for the night. He said they were so happy to finally have a hot meal. They sat around the fire, greedily slurping the stew which had large chunks of delicious and tender meat cooked in it. When he was almost done with the stew, he pointed to one of the bulls in the field that pulled the till, and asked if that’s what was in the stew. The woman motioned emphatically, NO! Bulls were too valuable to eat. He explained to me that in that area of the world at that time, they were seen more like tractors, or combines, expensive farm equipment, not at all like the beef and milk cows that were farmed in our town. What was the meat then? Well, the soup he was eating was made of RATS! “Rats!!” he would shout, and I always squealed when he revealed this, even the though he’d told me the story many times before. Rat soup! And it was good, too! When I was a little older, probably eight or nine years o - @chavisawoods on Instagram

Happy Birthday, William Faulkner! The man, the myth, the legend was born on this day in 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi. Shortly before his fifth birthday, the Falkner family relocated to Oxford, where he stayed for much of his life. The Nobel Prize-winning author is best known for his novels that took place in fictional Yoknapatawpha County, which was modeled after Lafayette County, Mississippi. While his home in Oxford, Rowan Oak, is currently closed to the public, the grounds and nearby Bailey Woods Trail are open from dawn until dusk daily. #williamfaulkner #rowanoak #oxfordms #olemiss #onthisday #happybirthday #hbd @visitoxfordms @cityofoxfordms @olemiss - @ummuseum on Instagram
