Looks like our Tornado Over Kansas has some attention at MidlandUSA Radio Corporation in Kansas City, the nation’s #1 manufacturer of NOAA Weather Radios. Their meteorologist/spokesperson Bruce Jones has a long standing interest in the painting, and shared that a print of the painting that was in his childhood home inspired him to become a meteorologist. A new Tornado Over Kansas poster is heading to Kansas City for the Midland Radio team! Thank you, Mr. Jones, for sharing these comments with us: The painting tells such a frightening story and yet the Mom and Dad ( certainly the latter) always gave me assurance that the kids and the pets would be okay. Curry also did a good job on the tornado and its surrounding clouds, at a time when the details of tornado formation were not well understood. His portrayal of the funnel cloud and its position in relation to the parent thunderstorm is right on. Even what’s now known as the “clear slot”, a slight erosion of nearby clouds caused by downdraft winds, is portrayed accurately. He must have studied several photos and astutely recreated a real twister. For all of its scientific integrity and the sheer terror, familial cohesiveness, and kinetic drama of the situation, it ranks as my favorite painting. Today, we reflect on the 100th Anniversary of Womens Suffrage. To commemorate this important event, Bowne House has published an article about a long line of strong, independent-minded women in the Bowne & Parsons families who lived in the home since 1661. They are remembered for their significant social and civic contributions to the Flushing and greater New York City communities. Additional information about Bowne & Parsons women can be found in a slideshow entitled On the Path to Freedom, prepared for our Juneteenth celebration and available on our website. pure love. . This was captured years ago but the session that changed everything for me. This dear man was diagnosed with a disease he would not beat. So when they came in for a portrait... I knew my mission was to capture the last portrait they would take... With a lump in my throat and maybe a tear or two.. I watched how these two souls looked at each other with so much adoration. It was my duty to capture that. ❤️ . #canontpmlove #canonusa #theportraitmasters #theportraitmasterslive2020 portraitphotography #portraits #portraitmood #makeportraits #discoverportrait #postthepeople #holdthemoments #lookslikefilm #existinphotos #theportraitproject #contemporaryportrait #canonfeed - @annie.marie.photography on Instagram

National siblings day and Easter My sisters and I have always depended on each other we grew up surrounded by storms and chaos. Hard times bring blessings. My sisters were magical, storytellers and creators. We danced we sang and we played games together using our imaginations. We were barefoot, tomato sandwiches and laying in the sunshine....nothing fancy. We were lucky to take beach trips together and get to go to the beautiful mountains near Asheville North Carolina. We made up dance routines and played a game we created called I double dare! When we played this game we would do crazy things like...go to the laundromat waiting on my father to finish his job and play our made up game. I remember once my sister got in a dryer, I danced on a table and then another sister stole someone’s bicycle only for a moment while he chased her through the parking lot. Later that day as we waited for my father we danced in the median in the middle of the highway.!!!This was how we got our kicks. Like any good Southerner I drank beer way before I was supposed to. Made prank phone calls that would blow your mind. They even snuck me into a movie theater when I was around four for free pretending like I was a baby. Basically we found things to laugh about that were our own special language. An odd sense of humor that siblings share. We all love to read, play cards, hike and garden. There is beauty in the joys we have because they are simple and free. We all love church in our own sweet way and I look back at kneeling with my father & praying with my mother. I am grateful to them because I understand and feel a connection to a higher power and the comfort of quiet meditation. Yes, I am completely blessed and grateful. Because I understand what the riches of the world really are. Blessed with family and the love of simple things. #easter #siblings #gratitude - @andiemacdowell on Instagram

On Sept. 27, 1962, Silent Spring by Rachel Carson was published. “. . . She identified human hubris and financial self-interest as the crux of the problem and asked if we could master ourselves and our appetites to live as though we humans are an equal part of the earth’s systems and not the master of them.” 🌱🌱🌱 Posted @withregram • @zinneducationproject On Sept. 27, 1962, Silent Spring by Rachel Carson was published. . . The book exposes the devastating impact of widespread and uncontrolled pesticide use on the environment. As explained on the Rachel Carson website, . . “Serialized in three parts in The New Yorker, Silent Spring was published in August and became an instant best-seller and the most talked about book in decades. Utilizing her many sources in federal science and in private research, Carson spent over six years documenting her analysis that humans were misusing powerful, persistent, chemical pesticides before knowing the full extent of their potential harm to the whole biota. . . . . . She identified human hubris and financial self-interest as the crux of the problem and asked if we could master ourselves and our appetites to live as though we humans are an equal part of the earth’s systems and not the master of them.” . . In response, Carson was vilified by the chemical industry and their allies in the mainstream press and government. She was called a Communist, disloyal, unscientific, and hysterical. . . More than six decades later, the need to teach about threats to the environment is even greater and the attacks on truth telling continue. . . One year. It’s been one year since #grandmagraciekate left us. She would have been 99 and would have had 99 thousand things to say about 2020. We spent hours talking over the last 10 years of her life and sharing stories. My deepest regret is all of the stories I didn’t hear, the history I’ll never know, and the inner workings of what made my family tick, because she was the heartbeat and center of it all. And if this year has taught us anything, it’s that life is short and unpredictable and that we humans are so fragile. If you still have your people, ask the questions, uncover the stories, learn to listen and by knowing your roots you may understand yourself a bit better. Weve been in Europe and the UK for centuries. 🙏🏾 Ive done a lot of self-education over the years on the Black presence in Europe and the UK. But Ive had my eyes further opened recently thanks to @peter_brathwaite s reworking of artwork featuring Black people across history (check his insta out) and reading more books like David Olusogas Black and British. Black history IS British history - we need to change what we are taught in school. Check out @theblackcurriculum who have free resources and are reimagining Black British history in schools. And Nate Holder who has plenty of resources/articles on restructuring music education to be inclusive, diverse and factually correct on his website www.nateholdermusic.com. The professionally recoloured photographs on this post were created by @tom_photografix. I look forward to learning more about Black history before we were enslaved. Our history didnt start at slavery and didnt start at the Windrush - always more to learn. . . . . . . . . . #blackhistory #britishhistory #art #reworking #nationalgallery #blackbritish #windrush #recolour #history #blackcurriculum #diversify - @cassiekinoshi on Instagram

The promise of a medicine woman If you come to me as a victim I will not support you. But I will have the courage to walk with you through the pain that you are suffering. I will put you in the fire, I will undress you, and I will sit you on the earth. I will bathe you with herbs, I will purge you, and you will vomit the rage and the darkness inside you. Ill bang your body with good herbs, and Ill put you to lay in the grass, face up to the sky. Then I will blow your crown to clean the old memories that make you repeat the same behavior. I will blow your forehead to scare away the thoughts that cloud your vision. I will blow your throat to release the knot that wont let you talk. I will blow your heart to scare fear, so that it goes far away where it cannot find you. I will blow your solar plexus to extinguish the fire of the hell you carry inside, and you will know peace. I will blow with fire your belly to burn the attachments, and the love that was not. I will blow away the lovers that left you, the children that never came. I will blow your heart to make you warm, to rekindle your desire to feel, create and start again. I will blow with force your vagina or your penis, to clean the sexual door to your soul. I will blow away the garbage that you collected trying to love what did not wanted to be loved. I will use the broom, and the sponge, and the rag, and safely clean all the bitterness inside you. I will blow your hands to destroy the ties that prevent you from creating. I will blow your feet to dust and erase the footprints memories, so you can never return to that bad place. I will turn your body, so your face will kiss the earth. Ill blow your spine from the root to the neck to increase your strength and help you walk upright. And I will let you rest. After this you will cry, and after crying you will sleep, And you will dream beautiful and meaningful dreams, and when you wake up Ill be waiting for you. I will smile at you, and you will smile back I will offer you food that you will eat with pleasure, tasting life, and I will thank you. Because what I’m offering today, was offered to me before when darkness lived within me. More in comments - @indigenouspeoplesmovement on Instagram

Ritchie’s family wanted to remember “Mama” and share her birthday with Ritchie’s family and friends. Happy Birthday Mama. Concepcion Connie Valenzuela was born on October 6, 1915, and passed on October 18, 1987. In the mid 1950’s the Valenzuela Family moved to the Los Angeles suburb of Pacoima where the then-teenager attended high school and began to play in a rock band. As his career began to take off, he changed his name to Ritchie Valens and eventually recorded the hits we all know and love. The matriarch of the family had lived in Watsonville during her later years, but spent time in the home that Valens bought for her in 1958 with his music earnings. Mrs. Valenzuela would have been 104 years old. #ritchievalens #alwaysremember #neverforget - @ritchievalensofficial on Instagram

Tales of the Archives- Pearl City 🍍”Old Time Fun”. 📻 By the 1930s-50s, most Pearl City residents were employed in August Butts green bean fields which once covered much of what is now “West Boca.” It was a hard life and even the children worked in the fields during harvest time. Many Pearl City residents also lacked running water and electricity; things we take for granted today. Nonetheless, they knew how to enjoy themselves. Walter Dolphus recalled: “Well, the kids always played ball; and I never forget years ago of a marble range . . . was right in the center of Dixie Highway, and now you can’t even walk across it. A car would pass by probably every four or five hours. So that’s where we used to make up our marble range, right in the middle of Dixie Highway between 11th and 12th Streets. Right in the middle of Dixie Highway.” Amos Jackson had this memory: “We used to celebrate the 20th of May here [that is Florida’s “Emancipation Day”]. That’s the day that we were told that the slaves were freed. … The 20th of May was a big day to us. We’d have big baseball games, picnics on the beach and Collin Spain used to carry his juke box, or piccolo as we called it, on the beach; and he had a generator, and they called it a dynamo at the time, that would provide the electrical service for the box. We used to have music on the beach, swimming, ice cream, and sandwiches. Later on in the day we would have baseball games.” Irene Demery Carswell recalled the pleasures of a box supper: “Well this is boxes that the ladies would fix with food, and the men would buy these boxes. This was one of the recreational parties that they had. The men would buy the box maybe for fifty cents or seventy-five cents at the most. And then, for instance, if I made a box and you liked my box, I had this box all decorated with crepe paper, etc. And sometimes there’d be big boxes and little boxes, and they had fried chicken and potato salad and maybe some collard greens, or some homemade rolls, or maybe made a cake. You put enough for two in the box. For instance if you bought my box, you and I would sit and eat whether we were married or not. #continuedincomments - @bocahistory on Instagram

#pierresangpatriot #pierretendean #pahlawanrevolusi #gugurbunga #tendean #g30spki #g30spki1965 #1965 #kaptenpierretendean #nasution #abdulharisnasution #pahlawanbangsa #jasmerah - @vz_pierre on Instagram

All the feels for this picture! I can’t explain how much I love old love. But this picture made me teary eyed. Maybe it’s the sweet country music, their soft wrinkles behind the kiss, the way he holds her, knowing a little more about their story, how kind they are, meeting their entire family, how humble he was & so much more. Anyway you put it, old love is something so special & I feel honored to have been able to capture this. Now excuse me while I go cry. 😭😍 - @bellcameraworks on Instagram

It’s time for another #ThrowbackThursday. ⏳ Today we are reminded of the joys of a simple chat with friends and family…without masks or 6 feet between.
