Ritchie’s family wanted to remember “Mama” and share her birthday with Ritchie’s family and friends. Happy Birthday Mama. Concepcion Connie Valenzuela was born on October 6, 1915, and passed on October 18, 1987. In the mid 1950’s the Valenzuela Family moved to the Los Angeles suburb of Pacoima where the then-teenager attended high school and began to play in a rock band. As his career began to take off, he changed his name to Ritchie Valens and eventually recorded the hits we all know and love. The matriarch of the family had lived in Watsonville during her later years, but spent time in the home that Valens bought for her in 1958 with his music earnings. Mrs. Valenzuela would have been 104 years old. #ritchievalens #alwaysremember #neverforget - @ritchievalensofficial on Instagram

I photographed this 100 year old woman in her small ranch kitchen outside Gallatin Gateway, Montana many years ago. People among their stuff tells a more in-depth story. I had her hold the wedding photo, and honestly I cannot now remember if it was hers or her parents photo, but the point was to remind the viewer that this 100 year old woman was once very young like them. And that when she looks out at the world she sees it as she did when she was young. People’s bodies grow old but the person inside does not. Inside we all stay kinda the same. #montana #montanaphotographer #montanaphotojournalism #rural #portraitphotography #portrait #blackandwhite #blackandwhitephotography #bozeman #bozemanphotographer - @dougloneman on Instagram

My heart is broken and I don’t know when it will ever be whole again. My mommy and our best friend, was called home on April 20, 2020. During the past couple of weeks with everything happening in life and in the world, especially while we were caring for her, I have been reminded that no matter who you are, what you do or how long you live, when it’s all said and done, we all must surrender. We must let go and rely on someone or something outside of ourselves and trust God. I know she was welcomed home with open arms, trusting God completely. When I told her it was okay for her to go, I really meant it... Right now, I’m not so sure that I still do. I’m thankful that she’s not suffering and although it was quick for us, it must have felt like forever to her. Mommy was not one to call on God out loud, she always said that she “believes in a higher power, man wrote the Bible and man’s a damn lie” ... In her final days, I heard her call on the Lord and raise her hands like never before and I say thank you Jesus. I know God, because I’ve watched how she has been led and lifted all of my life. I am because she is, we are because she lived. She lived honestly and unapologetically. I’ve learned that “the truth is confrontational” and my momma loved a good confrontation. She is the greatest woman I know and I thank God for her. She was a very proud and strong woman, who lived for 87 years. I know that’s a long time but it still doesn’t feel like it’s long enough. Although she had many trials and tribulations, she never let them define her and she never used them as a reason to give up. In 1964, her three children from her first marriage, an abusive marriage, were taken away from her because she married a black man. They said she was considered “something less than a mother because she married a negro.” She raised my sister and I on her own, losing family and jobs along the way because she chose to love. She sacrificed many aspects of her life to raise and care for us. I know how hard this journey has been for her and I know that she would do it all again to be at a place surrounded by love and those that she loves at the end of her physical life. She poured all t - @honeychildtracy on Instagram
