🇬🇧 in comments - @child_of_socialism on Instagram

- @theforgottennyc on Instagram

It’s 1932 and we are looking at Elizabeth Street, taken from a classroom at the Railways Institute, right under the Flinders Street Station Clocktower. Around the time that this was snapped, the ABC had just been established, unemployment was at 32%, Australia’s population was 6.5 million, the Sydney Harbour Bridge first opened, Hitler announced he was running for President of Germany and the well known Snail in a Bottle (Judgement in Donoghue v Stevenson) was handed down in the House of Lords shining light on the legal obligation to ensure the safety or well-being of others. 📸: The Herald . . . #melbourne #vintage #photography #oldmelbourne #melb #australia #blackandwhite #melbourne_insta #melbourne_photoblog #melbonpix #royalexhibitionbuilding #art #architecture #melbournearchitecture #coffee #bourkestreet #retro #vintagephotos - @oldvintagemelbourne on Instagram

Cities are hardened to death and disease. Six per cent of Chicago’s inhabitants died in the cholera pandemic of 1854; an outbreak in Hamburg in 1892 killed 8,600; the Great Plague claimed the lives of 100,000 Londoners — almost a quarter of the population — in 1665-66. The metropolis was traditionally dingy. The gleaming hubs of modern cities, now emptied by Covid-19 lockdowns and the fear of infection, are historical anomalies. “The river is almost black, and is covered with black barges; above the black housetops . . . rises a dusky wilderness of masts,” Henry James wrote of Greenwich in south-east London in 1887. Those who evaded bacteria and viruses had to take their chance on the streets — London knife crime is not new: it accounted for 56 per cent of murders in the medieval city. Then there were fires, including the 14 that burnt most of wooden-built Oslo by 1624, and bombs, which destroyed two-thirds of Coventry’s city centre in 1940. Yet for centuries, it has been hard to stop country-dwellers leaving their bucolic calm and rushing to become citizens. O Rio Demolido (Parte 1/5) . . - @theforgottennyc on Instagram

#OnThisDay in 1870, the Palmer House Hotel opened for business. While it has existed in three iterations, it has long been the pinnacle of grandeur and luxury in Chicago and was for decades the hotel of choice for visiting presidents, dignitaries, and businesspeople. Why was Napoléon III so keen to renovate Paris in the 19th century? For starters, the center of the city was unhealthy and overcrowded. In working class neighborhoods like the Quartier des Arcis in the 3rd arrondissement, there was 1 inhabitant for every 3 square meters. This same neighborhood is depicted in this iconic c. 1853 photograph by Charles Marville. Since few of his images depict actual people, they offer a nostalgic view of pre-Haussmann Paris, without its social problems. The narrow street shown here was later destroyed to make way for an extension to Rue Rivoli. Proud to announce the acquisition of one of the most prestigious land sites in Shanghai. This jewel lies in the center of Shanghai along Huaihai Road, the most romantic and heritage boulevard. Huaihai Road was once Avenue Joffre, named after the French general Joseph Joffre in 1922. By the 1930s, western-style restaurants, night clubs and dancing halls filled the district with music spilling out to the streets. It was adored by the most cultured and fashion-forward crowd in Shanghai so much that it was known as the Oriental Avenue des Champs-Elysees. We create, we celebrate and we reinvigorate the glamour and romance of Huaihai Road’s golden days. Marine Drive & the automobile, 1953. Archival pic from “Our Bombay,” a Dec. 1953 publication by Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) in which Prime Minister Nehru wrote: ‘A city, like a house, is not a mere collection of steel and brick, cement and mortar. It is the outward expression of the life of a community’. Marine Drive with 35 consecutive Art Deco sea facing buildings was the road to be on. The automobile brought speed, power, streamlined design, mobility and symbolised both success and affluence in a modern aspirational city. In these pics @karlbhote tells us we see a mix of primarily English and American cars. Convertibles were already falling out of favour, confirmed by only one seen at the bottom right, likely a Sunbeam Talbot drophead coupe. Since this is the pre Fiat Ambassador days, we see mostly foreign cars - majority of which were assembled in India. Ford had large scale assembly operations in Bombay. General Motors had similar operations in Sewri where Buick (retailed by Metro Motors), and Chevrolet cars (retailed by The Bombay Garage), rolled out. Dodge and Plymouth cars were assembled at Premier Automobiles Kurla facility, and retailed by The Bombay Cycle and Motor Agency which still stands at Sandhurst bridge. Across the road were the stunning modern Deco showrooms of Dadajee Dhackjee & Co, agents for Packard and Mercedes-Benz cars, at Shree Pant Bhuvan. The English were represented by Morris cars, sold by the French Motor Car Co. at New Queens Road and Hillman Minx cars were assembled by Automobile Products of India (API) at their Bhandup facility. Austin cars were sold by The Automobile Co. Ltd, also at New Queens Road. Cars seen in the picture: 1.Sunbeam Talbot Drophead Coupe - around 1947/48 2.Hillman Minx (2 cars seen) - around 1948-52 3.Hindustan 14 - around 1949-54 4.Dodge Custom - 1947/48 5.Vauxhall Velox or Wyvern - around 1952/55 @karlbhote is a vintage & classic car enthusiast, with a particular fondness for India’s automotive history & Bombay’s Deco. #cars #automobile #marineDrive #Ford #Vauxhall #Morris #chevrolet #GM #artdeco #mumbai - @artdecomumbai on Instagram

Posted by Mags McGee on our Paisley Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/Paisleyscotlamd This photograph was taken around 1890. Paisley was very industrious at that time - just look at the chimneys. The Town Hall can be seen clearly, and to the right of it the yet unrestored Abbey. The buildings in the foreground are Saucel Brewery (left) and Saucel Distillery (right). They were in production into the early 20th century. Photograph and information from Paisley in old picture postcards. - @paisleyscotland on Instagram
