Last night we had the special opportunity of honoring a hero. James Cottrell was small in stature but his bravery and toughness is very well known. He served valiantly in the United States Marine Corps. James passed away on Tuesday, August 4th, while visiting his biological family in Panama. He made his sisters promise that if anything ever happened to him in Panama, theyd come get him and bring him home. They had no idea how hard that would be. Due to Covid-19, and Panamanian Government restrictions, it took 18 days to get his remains safely back to Utah. Panama only lets 4 flights out of the country per month, and he was on the last one for August. After returning home from Iraq he told his sister that he wished he could have given his life in battle. He told her he wanted the heroes welcome from giving his life for the USA. Though he didnt pass on the battlefield, he received the honor he always wanted. It was a humbling drive home from Salt Lake International. James was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Valor (w/1 star), Combat Action Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (w/2 stars), Iraqi Campaign Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (w/3 stars), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal (w/1 star), Expeditionary Medal-Marine Corps (w/1 star), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation (w/2 stars), Presidential Unit Citation-Navy, and Navy Unit Commendation. ☆☆🇺🇲🇺🇲☆☆ If you would like to Honor James Cottrell for his funeral services this Tuesday August 25th please ask to be added to our Honor, Heal, Inspire Team. - @followtheflag on Instagram

My dad is a great man — he’s also as macho as they come. Like many traditional Latino fathers, my dad was all about tough love. I didn’t grow up hearing “te amo” or “te quiero.” No way, “los hombres no se dicen eso” (men don’t say that to each other). Don’t get me wrong, my father was very loving and nurturing when I was a kid but when I became a teenager, things changed. It was all about tough love from then on. I think it had something to do with him wanting to toughing me up for the world out there — the way he was brought up. This recent text conversation is the first time my dad opened up in this way. It was a reply to one of my messages where I shared with him that he continues to inspire and motivate me. I also told him how much I love him. (Swipe to read the translation.) I’m sharing these screenshots as a way to encourage all my fellow Latinos — and anyone with traditional parents to open up to their dad or mom (both)! To my Latino brothers, let’s remove machismo from our culture along with the teachings of “los hombres no lloran” (real men don’t cry or show emotion). Seven years ago today I resigned from Gaspari Nutrition. I remember it was right around my birthday. It was a birthday present long overdue. In the end, I had served 11 long hard years– earning a Masters Degree in sports nutrition dos and donts. We built a brand from Richs mothers garage into an $85m international brand. I met some amazing people and a handful of animals. One day Daniel Pierce @daniel_pierce showed up at the Arnold and it was a blessing for the company. Crazy times! I remember countless emails from customers saying I want to buy what you make next! SuperPump250 was coming in by the truckloads in 10 different flavors and out the door (at a 4n1) the next day. We did all this at the very beginning of social media. I got to travel the world. I got to see Flex Lewis @flex_lewis grow from ‘potential’ into a multi-time Olympia 212 champion. I remember walking into Richs office to resign and the first person I called afterwards. I felt like the weight of the world was off my shoulders. I got ahead of the stress before it literally killed me. It was a great experience that I flipped into the last 7 years at TeamWERQ Consulting. Seven years and counting with a handful of brands. De volta ao Brasil após um bom tempo em Las Vegas, sempre a realização de um sonho estar jogando a WSOP, o maior evento de poker do Mundo; foi um período de muito aprendizado e resiliência, lidar com as frustrações diárias das coisas não caminharem como deveriam, como as frustrações das bolhas (quase entrar na premiação, para os leigos rs) e eliminações no fim do dia, as vezes já de madruga, para muitas vezes estar no dia seguinte às 10am jogando um novo torneio, e assim sucessivamente. Tive a oportunidade de jogar diversos torneios da série com diversos sentimentos, me senti muito preparado pra estar ali, mesmo que as coisas não estivessem acontecendo como o esperado; mais uma vez a honra de jogar o Main Event do WSOP, sem sombra de dúvida o melhor torneio de poker do mundo, uma estrutura surreal, uma atmosfera diferente dos outros e um sonho/objetivo pra qualquer jogador de poker, esse ano não desenvolveu como eu gostaria , inclusive a maneira como fui eliminado, mas não apaga a gratidão de estar lá mais um ano🙏🏻. Fica aqui a certeza que vou trabalhar MUITO DURO os próximos 11 meses, pra estar lá novamente ano que vem e ainda mais preparado👊🏻🙏🏻. Happy 60th Bday @AndreHarrell I met Andre from @UncleRush when I was just a teenager and when Russell told him I was a talented director he didn’t believe it. I kept on him and told him how I aspired to direct a music video for his company one day #UptownRecords Andre ultimately let me direct his most important artists HeavyD, Jodeci, Puffy, and Mary J. Blige and help shape their images and express visually what they were trying to say with their music. What an education! I am grateful to Andre and Russell for bringing me into their small and very tight circle that included @315nelsongeorge , @chrisrock, Joey Simmons, @jluvely2000, Gary Harris, @glenefriedman @stanlathan and allow a hungry jewish kid from #MiamiBeach who loved HipHop to be exposed to the debates, arguments, philosophical diatribes, about black culture, music, movies, comedy, marketing, relationships, heartbreak, business, art, fashion and everything in between. I don’t think they realized what it meant to me to be treated as an equal and a friend the way they did. They gave me such an incredible gift, not only the insight and education but the confidence to accomplish what I did over the years! Money Talks, Rush Hour and even The Family Man came out of my exposure to these men and their ideas, thoughts and creativity. They put me down, gave me the ball and I ran with it! I always considered Andre and these men mentors and I love them for their generosity of spirit, believing in me and most of all for always being honest and telling me when I was wack! After playing our first show at a teen center in Milpitas, Ca(feb 1999) we drove down to Mexico for 2 shows with buck-o-nine & voodoo glow skulls.- - Tijuana was night one with well over 1,000 people. We played well and people were going wild. I remember Federales surrounding the venue with guns around their shoulders. And I remember buck-o-nine not making it, but cant remember why?- - The next night was in Ensenada. We had stopped on the way for lobster with voodoo. It was super cheap and we drank Bloody Marys. Buck-o-nine made it to night 2. I remember we didnt play that great, but the show was still pretty sick.- - We went to a party afterwards and ate ceviche tacos, avocados and drank chihuahua beer. This is Simon Eine. He directed Scenes from Moliere, our grad price from NIDA, 92. He has left us now, hopefully to sit and laugh with Danny about the fragility of life. The world is less today. Drama schools are funny places. 3 years of intense passion, pain and happiness. When I met this man a lot of people were telling me no. Then he said Oui and do you have more please. And I had more. After 3 years, it looked like I may have found myself. I applied for a scholarship and asked if I could join him in Paris at the Comedie- Francaise, he couldn’t have been more welcoming. I didn’t get the scholarship and was so ashamed that I never got back in touch.... it was before computers. I don’t deal well with problems, even today. I heard he was very disappointed with me which made me incredibly sad. The last thing I wanted to do was upset one of my heroes. When FB came about he reached out to me and sent me wonderful messages and comments on my work. He loved me and I loved him, unfortunately from afar. Now he is gone. Going back to 1999, as a Tower Records display artist, I did this one for the release of Beastie Boys Anthology: The Sounds of Science. The band logo, all lettering and 3-D elements were foam-board cut out by hand with an X-acto knife. I poked out a hole for each bulb so the Christmas lights would rotate around the the logo. The black and yellow picture of the band were traced from photocopies and painted on with acrylic. Finished it off with an aluminum foil wrapped sardine can sculpture. At this point in time dance music was really picking up steam in the US and the annual Winter Music Conference was growing in leaps and bounds. This year would be memorable as it was also the launching of the Ultra Music Festival, which our Josh Wink would be one of the headliners on. At that time the festival actually took place on the beach and was nowhere the size of what it has become in recent years with its eventual move downtown. During the early days of the Winter Music Conference, there were not as many events as the crowd was primarily limited to industry insiders, artists, and group of hardcore fans. By 1999 the Conference was becoming a destination for fans of dance music all over the world as it was their opportunity to see many of their favorite acts in one location. By 1999, the Ovum Party had cemented itself as a cant miss event on the WMC weekly calendar and the Living Room had become the events annual home. The Living Room was an intimate space that during regular operation was a swanky luxe bottle service venue. It had an intimate main dance floor as well as a backroom. The cue would start building early in the evening and the party would fill quickly causing quite a scene on Washington Avenue with people trying to get into the venue. It was always an interesting mix to see the Living Rooms regular clientele mixing with the WMC crowd. By the end of the night everyone would be dancing together and joining in the groove! This year the main room was being held down by our very own David Alvarado who had recently joined the Ovum fold and our main man Josh Wink. In this photo, two people that have mentored me, shaped my tastes, and put my life on the path that it is on. The dude on the right is @warren702, who you all know. But the dude in the middle is Frank Mancuso aka Deekal - who was the son of my fathers childhood friend. I met him in 7th grade and he helped shape my taste in music. We hit it off immediately, comparing notes on Public Enemy, Cypress Hill, Too $hort, and NWA. He moved back to New York after high school, but we kept in touch. If not for him, my life and career path may have been completely different. I found out today that Frank died on Wednesday (not COVID-related, for those curious). In recent years, he held up our friendship better than I could have. Thank you, Frank Mancuso. Rest peacefully, my friend. Update: I have just found out that before he passed, the nurse asked what kind of music he liked and his sister Cara told her to play N.W.A. 14 years ago today, me and my friend @jamiemoore777 went to war in Salford for the British Super-Welterweight title. It was a highly anticipated fight at the time with both of us having aggressive, exciting, all-action styles. But I think it’s fair to say that it exceeded all expectations and has gone down as one of the best domestic clashes of all-time. My Father, My Dad, My Friend On April 6,2020 we received another angel in the sky to watch over us. Arturo Francisco Hernández was my dad and going to turn 58 on April 8. He was someone who prioritized family and friendship, someone who was always there for you during the toughest times. He had a attitude of nothing was impossible and anything you could do as long as you give it your all. Was stubborn, never took a no because there was always a way to things. Always stayed positive. He was a great role model and a man with a very big heart. He was a family man who leaves behind a daughter of 16, my sister Guadalupe and my mom Lourdes. He went in to Bellevue Hospital on March 29 and started his fight with the virus. He fought with the virus as much as he could until he was taken to ICU and put on a ventilator a few days after being admitted. He showed signs of fight as he would go back and forth between showing progress. On the ventilator his lungs started to fail as well as his kidneys until his body gave. It’s tough times for the family as we will be missing him a lot and we will continue his fight. Family is devastated going thru a lot of pain.
