RAW AND VULNERABLE. For more than 1825 days. I believed I didn’t deserved even a drop of love from anyone, no friend, no family, no one. For years i wasn’t able to look in the mirror because rather than seeing a face i would see all the words and scars etched on my body. It wasn’t easy to heal. I destroyed a-lot of things, myself, and a-lot of people around me that i loved. I blamed every loss on myself, i punished myself for everything. Torturing myself for being so unlovable. It was hard, destructive to a young mind, but it was what it was. I couldn’t change anything even though I didn’t understand anything at that time. It takes someone’s unconditional love, for them fight for you to see that you’re not that hard to love. I found that i was somewhat loveable. It takes a-lot of time, a-lot of sleepless nights of reassurances, a-lot of tender hugs but you do see how healing unconditional love can be to a broken soul. Even then if you break that’s normal too. It takes a-lot to heal but too less to break. Sometimes the broken pieces will be too hard to pick up. Sometimes there wont be hands to pick those pieces up. Sometimes the hands that used to put you back together won’t be there in the moment. Sometimes even your own hands will not be able to pick up those pieces but it’s okay. Life is broken yet beautiful, that’s how it is for me, but it takes years of pain to heal, and years of love to break. This cycle might never end for me. Maybe my words will run out, maybe my breath will give up on me but the story won’t end. It never does so wait and watch how your story turns out because sometimes even the pain will be worth the smile of someone. . This is me, as raw as i could be as vulnerable as i could be. And I’m not shamed of my past or my present even if i used to be but I’m not anymore. I was broken, for years, beyond anyone’s imagination, broken in innocence, broken in love, broken in friendship and broken in life. Change can be exciting but also challenging. My new work norm, even post Covid is going to be so different to pre. ♦️Pre Covid I was working at Hawthorn Football club and had been there 12 years part time in an energetic, upbeat, striving for excellence environment. ♦️I recently resigned from my part time role at Swisse Wellness after being there for 13 years, watching it grow from a staff of around 25 to literally hundreds and a billion dollar industry. ♦️I decided to finish off private practice, with my last day this Friday after 25 years working in the Glenroy community. ♦️I am hanging up the boots in my voluntary role as President of Sports Dietitians Australia after 5 years in October. Such a wonderful member based organisation. I will be changing to a 4 day a week position as an employee at Dietitians Australia, our national body, working from home, in an advocacy and dietitian advisor role. I have made sure I still have time though with my spare day to keep up with my other passion of presenting, speaking, running careers events, working with the media and brands (e.g.Rokeby Farms, Australian Almond Board) . I might need to work on the worklife balance! 🙃 . I know that this change will have positives BUT I also know I will need to look after my mental and physical health with these big changes. It can be a vulnerable time. I will miss the energy of being in a workplace; smelly footy players bounding in the office, laughing and music blaring in their gym, build up of game day, the great people and work place wellness focus of Swisse, having contact with clients and seeing them progress. As an extrovert I need my people fix ! I already find I am sitting so much more, forgetting to take a lunch break and over thinking about work at night, as I find my way in a new work world. . I am loving the new challenges, not having to rush out the door or sit in traffic. With some self awareness, checking in and asking help from experts for strategies, I am sure I will enjoy my new norm! I just spent the last 2 weeks off grid in the #muskwakechika for a CBC documentary. I had an amazing time connecting to the land and this awesome horse named Vern. So I wasn’t originally going to post anything because I didn’t think I needed to, but now I feel the need to share a little about myself before the end of the day. Over the past few years it has been one of the wildest journeys learning who I am as a person. If you tried to tell Evan from four years ago about the person I am now, I would not only have thought you were lying, but couldn’t possibly comprehend your words to begin with. Being gay is not high on the list of words I would use to express myself. For the longest time I thought a person’s sexuality was their own business and shouldn’t be a cornerstone of who you are, but rather, an intrinsically accepted truth about yourself. It has taken me so long to learn about my sexuality and even longer to become comfortable with the reality that I am gay. I have never liked being told what to do, much less told who I was, and struggling with people trying to… well, to put it politely, “inform” me of my own identity was an issue for me in coming out. I remember having thoughts like “could I really have not known that I was gay if it was apparently so obvious to others?”. What I failed to realize at the time is that you discover who you are before anyone else. It’s ok if people have inclinations, suspicions, or hypotheses, because all of those things are rendered obsolete when posed against your experience of self discovery. I used to be afraid of hearing people say “oh, well I knew all along”, because I felt that statement would invalidated sharing this fragile piece of myself. “How could you have known if this is something I have just discovered?”… a common response I would find myself rehearsing in my head. But after opening up very slowly, person by person, I was met with a different response than the one I dreaded. I have been very fortunate in that I have been met with only loving words and tender remarks about my news. Here’s to 34! Keeping it cozy yet classy in quarantine. ⠀ The past year has been one of the most transformational of my life. I guess they call 33 your “Jesus Year” because it feels part of you dies and is reborn anew. Now, as we move into spring and I look back on the year behind me, I could not agree more. ⠀ In the last year I went through a lot of changes: I stepped behind the camera to work as a producer, I wrote a screenplay, I spent time developing my own concepts, and spent less time on the road and more time in the kitchen. ⠀ I also grieved deeply. I lost a close friend to suicide, supported my mother through a battle to cancer, left my life in Venice and took a step back from YouTube to try a different path, just as our channel hit a million subscribers. To an extent, all of these events were forms of loss. Of letting go. ⠀ If there has been a lesson in the past year, it has been on the importance of surrender. I feel this acutely now, as many of us do. We are living through an unprecedented time in which the entire world is being put on pause. We are all being forced to let go of what we had planned. To surrender. ⠀ So today, despite the omnipresent fear and the widespread suffering of so many, I am embracing the gift hidden within the chaos. The gift of stillness, of connection, and of slowing down enough to appreciate one day at a time. ⠀ Thank you all for your kind birthday wishes, I really feel the love today. As a gift to myself I’ll be taking a brief hiatus from social media to turn inward and really be present with myself over the coming week.
