The 4th Marine Corps District welcomed in the new Commanding Officer, Colonel Heather J. Cotoia this past week! @4thmcd 🇺🇸 . She enlisted in the Marine Corps in the Delayed Entry Program in July 1985. After graduation from high school in June 1986, she went to boot camp at Parris Island, SC. In August 1996, Colonel Cotoia was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps and attended The Basic School (TBS). Following her selection to Top Level School, she reported in July 2018 and attended the U.S. Naval War College, earning a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies in June 2019. . Colonel Cotoia’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (gold star in lieu of fifth award), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (gold star in lieu of fifth award), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. . Were sending our warmest congratulations to Dr. Mark Hosler, associate professor of music, who retired this spring after 44 years of teaching. Mark has been an amazing advocate and teacher of the arts at Clemson for over 20 years and his leadership and insights will be greatly missed. I’ve had a wonderful teaching career, and I’ve loved every minute of it. As I reflect on it, I’ve been so fortunate to encounter so many outstanding students and colleagues along the way. The performing arts faculty and staff, the thousands of students I’ve taught over the years and the hundreds of high school teachers and support staff members I’ve served with have all provided me with so many fond memories. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Ray Hermosillo (retired) who passed away on September 7, 2020. After serving as a volunteer firefighter for the department for several years, Ray was hired as a full time firefighter in November 1966. He was both the first latino firefighter and the first bilingual Spanish speaking firefighter. Ray was a highly-skilled, multifaceted person with a no-nonsense professional approach to his job. He served our Department and community for 32 years until his retirement in October 1994 as a Firefighter III. We are grateful for his service to the community and for being a great role model and mentor to all the young firefighters who had the opportunity to work with him. The impact of his mentoring and leadership skills is evident throughout the department and it is being passed on to the next generation of firefighters. Thank you for your service Ray. . Nuestros pensamientos y oraciones están con la familia de Ray Hermosillo (retirado) quien falleció el 7 de septiembre, 2020. Después de servir como bombero voluntario del departamento por unos años, Ray fue contratado como bombero de tiempo completo en noviembre de 1966. Now I know the word discipline isn’t very popular these days. And I would like to have a new word for it, because most people who teach disciplines don’t teach them very well. They teach it with a kind of violence. As if a discipline was something that is it going to be extremely unpleasant and you’re going to have to put up with. But that’s not the real secret of discipline. I would prefer to use the word skill. And discipline is a way of expression. Say, when you want to express your feelings in stone. Now stone doesn’t give way very easily. It’s tough stuff, and so you have to learn the skill of the discipline of the sculptor in order to express yourself in stone and so in every other way whatever you do you require a skill and its enormously important especially for American people to understand that there is absolutely no possibility of having any pleasure in life at all without skill. Today, we celebrate what would have been Dr. Pete Dawsons 90th birthday. It has nearly been a full year since we lost this incredible man. As we all look back to what Pete meant to us, what he did for us, were also reminded of what he would be telling us during these difficult times, what would be his words of encouragement? We are so blessed to be continuing on the mission of our beloved founder. As Pete would remind us, Onward and Upward. A message from Petes daughter, Anne Dawson. Today my sweet dad would have been 90 years old. From all the thoughtful messages I’ve been getting – I know he is in the hearts and minds of so many around the world that miss him as much as we do. Dipping into the archives again for this 2019 shot of Herwig Maurer, who is a musician, composer and photographer among many other things...including one of the most fascinating people I’ve ever known. He also happens to be a long-term collaborator with whom I have performed and recorded endless hours of improvised music over the past fifteen-plus years. Last summer we spent months recording every Wednesday evening at an old restaurant/venue in Topanga Canyon that was empty, but had reportedly been owned by Neil Young back in the ‘60s. To be carried away by those repetitive, hypnotic waves of sound, and to experience that link again with someone with whom you’re in such sync with through the abstract language of rhythm and time and ‘feel’ was just what I needed during what was definitely the toughest year of my life, and in retrospect, the timing of his call to propose the idea feels like more than mere coincidence. Occasionally I wonder if living in Los Angeles is what I want to continue to do, but among other factors, being able to meet and continue to collaborate with so many of the amazing people I have here over so many years makes it hard to even consider leaving. Then to be able to drive up into the hills and set my ratty, old 1960s Ludwig drum kit up on a stage that likely hosted some of the best music of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, then finish by walking out into the cool, quiet night air of a canyon that was once home to so many iconic musicians of that era ... well, there aren’t always a lot of words for that sort of thing (plus I’ve gone on long enough here). All we hear is ‘sharpness, detail, resolution’ - years ago I realized that all the film stuff I like actually had softness, detail yes of course but the scenes were not about sharpness as such. This slice of a tv commercial was shot on the Canon C500 mkii with a Sigma ART 85mm f1.4 lens - both genius tools for sharp images. The crazy thing is that this was shot at noon in full clear sunlight with no overhead scrim. Chrome trim would usually be blown out for starters on other cameras. CLOG2 works beautifully - so flexible. My point? It reminded me of photographing him at the Poetry Olympics in London and how serene he looked. Photographs of Monument Valley don’t do justice to the wide-open space filled with such large monuments. It is humbling to stand near any one of them. It is natural to want to capture the awe of the monuments, but because of their size it is difficult to capture the immense size in a photograph. I photographed each monument just as most photographers do, but the longer I stayed in Monument Valley the more I wanted to capture the beauty of the environment in which the monuments are located. I began photographing differently. This is a photo of me from when I first started shooting 4x5 film in 2015. It’s hard to believe it was almost 6 years ago. Admittedly, I still look pretty much the same. But I’ve grown so much and learned so much since this photo. I’ve made use of all of these years and have learned so much more about film photography. It’s been a long journey but my passion for film has only grown stronger with every year that passes. This photo was made by one of my former mentors, Erin, a true master of film photography. I’m so grateful to have learned from him as well as many others over the years. I couldn’t have gotten to the point I am now without all of them. This photo was made on 4x5 Polaroid peel apart film using a Shen Hao large format film camera. Peel apart film is interesting because it leaves both a positive and a negative. Today I have something new to share with you🤩 I got a new keyboard from @iqunix F96 - Knight Wireless Mechanical Keyboard! I was thinking to use it for 2-3 weeks and give you my opinion but 1 working day was enough for me to get full experience 😎 First it’s a bit smaller than my previous keyboard but build quality I must say is much better, actually I would say I prefer its aluminum body which is more steady with 0 flex. Other than that I’ve chosen brown Cherry MX switches, it has both bluetooth and USB type C connections, RGB backlighting and integrated long-lasting battery (this one is my favorite!) This keyboard also can connect to up to 3 different devices (in my experience till now I only needed two), its ALL BLACK with side keycap printed letters.
