Laut einer neuen Studie der New York University wäre es möglich, bis 2050 mehr als ein Jahrzehnt unserer CO2-Emissionen auszugleichen. Voraussetzung hierfür wäre jedoch eine Ernährungsumstellung – weg von tierischen und hin zu pflanzlichen Proteinen. Pflanzliche Lebensmittel beanspruchen nur einen Bruchteil der Fläche, die für die Produktion von Fleisch und Milchprodukten benötigt wird. 🐄 Durch die Umstellung auf diese Nahrungsmittel könnte ein Großteil der verbleibenden Landflächen Ökosysteme unterstützen, die CO2 absorbieren. 🌳 Auch das Risiko von Pandemien, wie zum Beispiel Covid-19, könnte somit reduziert werden. Die Wiederherstellung der einheimischen Vegetation auf ertragsarmen landwirtschaftlichen Flächen ist derzeit unsere sicherste Möglichkeit zur Entfernung von CO2, sagt Helen Harwatt, Co-Autorin der Studie.
