Today it’s ‘Prinsjesdag’ in the Netherlands. We celebrate this day with a royal fungi. Penicillium vanoranjei is an orange fungus first described by researchers at the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute in 2013. This species of Penicillium was discovered in soil samples from Tunisia. Unlike most Penicillium species, which tend to form white or greenish-blue colonies, this species is bright orange in colour. The discovery of this species coincided with the coronation of the (then) Prince of Orange Willem-Alexander on 30 April 2013. In honour of this event, the scientists decided to name the fungus for the new King of the Netherlands. This week I also waited in a 45min line for Uncle Tetsus (@uncletetsucanada) famous $10 cheesecake. I had to know if the hype was worth it for myself! Conclusion: it is a yummy well-priced cake, a crowd-pleaser to bring to a party Im sure. Is it the best cheesecake on the planet? No. Is it worth a 45-min line for? Probably not. It is a unique soufflé style cheesecake that definitely has its perks (I.e. no regretful dessert-belly), but it didnt personally satisfy my need for a super dense, moist American-style calorie-dense cheesecake! All in all glad I went, but likely wont be going back unless to buy for a friend! I will try the matcha soft serve they have next door though! - @teatimeflies on Instagram
